CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Kirk (Robert Downey Jr.) discusses acting with Tugg (Ben Stiller) and why he didn't win an Oscar for "Simple Jack."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Ben Stiller's satirical look at Hollywood, Tropic Thunder concerns the production of an epic Vietnam War film that quickly derails thanks to the giant egos of everyone involved in the production. Stiller stars as Tugg Speedman, an action hero trying to segue out of that genre. Jack Black plays Jeff Portnoy, a drug-addicted fat comic also attempting to change his image by taking on such a serious film. They star alongside Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.), one of the world's most awarded actors, and a man who insists on immersing himself totally in a role. In this case, that means Lazarus has had his skin dyed in order to portray an African-American soldier. After their outrageous behavior lands the film's director, Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan), in very hot water with producer Les Grossman (Tom Cruise), Cockburn takes the advice of grizzled Vietnam vet Four Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte); in order to gain control of his performers, Cockburn drops the actors off in the jungle, planning to film the movie guerrilla-style with hidden cameras. When the group stumbles upon a heroin production camp, the actors are unaware that they are in very real danger.

@Triple X It wasn't just jokes (which were masterfully crafted by the way). The whole point of the character was to shine a giant light on how bad it was for the practice of blackface/casting non-POC as characters who are POC/replacing the existing POC character with a white character. They even specifically pointed it out in the movie (through the actual black character in the crew) for the slow folks who didn't understand that. But sadly people have lost their ability to grasp context these days.

It took me a few viewings of this movie to notice just how much Downey's character dislikes Stiller's. He's constantly mocking, trolling and condescending to him in scenes like this, only to finally respect him at the end when he sees how "method" he has gone with the Simple Jack role. That's actually a pretty good character arc amid all the jokes and craziness in this movie.
@colten53
Жыл бұрын
It’s not just a dig at Stiller’s character. It also reflects Kirk’s own views on acting. He’s a guy with an identity crisis who becomes every character he plays via method acting. He takes the craft seriously while Tugg can still step away and recognize that it is just a role. It’s also worth noting that Tugg primarily played the same character for most of his career as opposed to dozens of different roles.
When I first saw this movie I never EVER thought that was Robert Downey Jr. He even sounds black which always blows my mind haha

Yeah, nothing to be offended for. It's just plain facts. Telling there are certain differences doesn't automatically mean one is inherently better than another, which is the actual definition of racism
I like the little digs the classical actor is taking at the action star, and the sarcastic surprised voice when he said, “oh, you don’t know”. It’s the little things that make good acting.

Another point to this scene is how audiences prefer to see disabled characters that thrive in spite of (or even because of) their disabilities. "Rain Man" and "Forrest Gump" had disabled focal characters but they manage to thrive which is why audiences loved them. "I Am Sam" had the protagonist constantly struggling throughout the film because of his disabilities and audiences and critics rejected it cause almost nobody wants to see a film about a disabled character where the guy is only struggling and failing.

There are no words for how brilliant this writing was; same goes for Robert Downey Jr.'s delivery. The jive 70s black guy character was nailed so perfectly and not only that - it wasn't just a generic jive black guy character. He created a totally unique and comically golden personality. We will never see anything like this again. Getting him back for a sequel would be incredible.

this is in my opinion Robert Downey Jr's greatest role
Don't you guys understand, that the reason why RDJ was casted for this part was to mock the very idea of Black-Face? The actual black character in the movie even mocks him! The reason why the character is so animated, hammed-up, and exaggerated is to mock the practise of casting white actors for colored characters, back when it was a regular practise during the early hollywood period. Apparently, that was "subtle" for some slow individuals, who couldn't catch onto the use of lampooning and satire. Jeez guys, perhaps dissect and inspect certain plot devices, or satirical tones before playing the racism card? Fuck's sake you idiots.
