Tron Lightcycle Run Review, Disney World Vekoma Motorbike Coaster | Best Coaster at Magic Kingdom?

Tron Lightcycle Run is the new-for-2023 roller coaster at Magic Kingdom. This is an indoor launched motorbike coaster from Vekoma and a clone of the coaster that opened at Shanghai Disneyland in 2016. This ride accelerates riders to an impressive 59 mph, travels past a series of lighting effects, and features an incredible on-ride soundtrack. Does all this make it the best ride at Magic Kingdom?

Actually, the launch is linear SYNCRONOIUS or LSM, not LIM. the center mechanism is presumably an emergency brake, while the portruding fins on either side (similar to brake fins) are the LSM motors (similar to vekoma's next-gen launch coasters). The only disney coaster I know of to still use LIM launches is Big Grizzly at HK Disney

Thanks for pointing that out. I've seen conflicting articles whether this was LIM or LSM.

Thank you for this breakdown of the attraction! I recently was able to do both Magic Kingdom and Shanghai Disneyland's, and they both feel the same on-ride. It usually never got past 60 minutes, even with the fewer overall rides at Shanghai, so hopefully one day at Magic Kingdom it'll get to that point. Shanghai also did not have the double sided lockers. The whole train puts their belongings on a rolling cart which cast members take to the unload platform. It really made me appreciate Magic Kingdom's locker upgrade! It's personally my favorite coaster at Magic Kingdom, but I agree that Cosmic Rewind wins the best Walt Disney World coaster award.

It does seem that way, but if you go for it, knowing what you're getting into, it's not so bad. I was quite skeptical too, but I went for it, and enjoyed the trip. You can't go in expecting a laid back visit, where you get on high thrill rides as many times as you want with reasonable lines. Go to SeaWorld for that.

Great video! Expert narration and editing. I really enjoying watching it. I'm now a senior, with sweet Disney memories going back to the summer of 1965 at age 9. I/we went regularly until Universal opened in Florida. Disney became a side-trip. We now visit (only) Universal; we don't need to carry our phones. I have very fond memories of my Disney years; but we have no plans to return. Especially (yes, at 68) I'm a coaster enthusiast and one must admit that Universal beats Disney in that regard.....Just sayin'

As usual for me, I know nothing at all about the movie the ride is based on. However, it didn't matter with Tron. It was still so captivating. And unlike Cosmic Rewind, I actually enjoyed the music that was playing during Tron, and it actually seemed to fit with what the ride was doing. Plus, I loved the riding position of these motorbikes. It was so cool and unique. It was my favorite launch of any Disney World coaster. Space Mountain is my favorite coaster at MK, but I enjoyed Tron far more than I thought I would.

Do the virtual queues/lightning lanes make marathoning this coaster impossible? During my trip to Universal's Islands of Adventure, I was able to ride VelociCoaster as many times as I wanted, and that ride is just as popular as Tron.

  • @CanobieCoaster

Yes it does. The most you can ride this per day is 3X (once with a standard virtual queue, once with a Lightning Lane, and once with a special ticket event if there's a party or evening hours).

Love to ride it, such a shame that Disney has become such a convoluted, consumer unfriendly predatory mess that im just not going to bother. Still, great to see how far Vekoma has come. My home park is the Efteling in The Netherlands and still enjoy Python untill this day. Back in 1981 when it opened, the largest steel coaster in all of Europe. The park features other Vekoma prototypes like the Villa Volta madhouse style attraction, the first of its kind, that can now be enjoyed in many other parks.

@@CanobieCoaster Yeah it has certainly been hit or miss with them in the past, but they do have a genuine passion for being innovative. And yeah, it really doenst always turn out to be a succes. Been to Walibi Holland recently and my son and me refuse to ride El Condor, the prototype SLC from 1994. Its just bad and even just by looking at it, it seems extremely uncomfortable.

If I were to get to the park at opening time and start the day in Tomorrowland, should I start the day off with this or Space Mountain? Keep in mind that this would be after the virtual queue is discontinued.

If you have early entry and are at the front of the rope drop crowd, Tron would be a good one to start with. If not, I'd do Space Mountain first. Then return to Tron at night to get a night ride.

Yikes. Simply just trying to go on the ride and experience seems like a technical, logistical and stressful mess. We thought about doing a week trip to DW but was so overwhelmed and exhausted with all this genie, virtual, and other processes we decided it wasn’t worth it at all and ended up going to Universal for the week and had a blast. No crazy planning needed - we simply stayed at a premier resort and basically was able to enjoy everything effortlessly.

I think this is one of the most uncomfortable and worst coasters I’ve ever been on. My chest felt like it was caved in before we started moving, and that was even with about 8 inches of room with the restraint off my back. Even if the actual layout was halfway decent, I’m still scared to ride again given the extreme chest pain I had for a couple days after my only ride.

I’m tall but I don’t remember noticing it on my calves. However, I thought the overall system was somewhat uncomfortable, I wouldn’t want to get stuck on the ride. It’s been a while since I’ve been on it, but feel like Flight of Passage was more uncomfortable (at least for me).

I haven't heard much hype for Tron, quite the opposite actually. However, Cosmic Rewind might be the most overrated coaster in history. It's good, but not the best roller coaster in the world, as some have stated. For me, it's # 5 out of 9 coasters at Disney World. Tron is # 4.
