Not just an entry level bike, it’s also an exit level bike! For me, now in my seventies, it’s a great bike to downsize to. Easy to handle and live with. Mainly I’ve got it for shorter runs, say under 100 miles. It takes a pillion/passenger easily. The 900 has 18” front wheel, the 1200 has a 17” front wheel. The Speed Twin is a great bike too. Nice review thank you.

Entry level? It's not that long ago that a "superbike" was 70 horse power. These things are 64 horse power! You're arguing over small change, at that point. Mate, I get it if you're a track rider or autobahns are your thing, this isn't the bike for you. But for 95% of people, something like this is more than enough. For life.

I took my 2019 street twin for a service the other week and borrowed a street Triple for a few hours. Nice bike but I was in traffic in Sydney and it wasn't an easy bike to get along with. Picked up the street twin and wat a difference ( a relief to be honest). I get the Triple is a totally different bike but it made me realise what an awesome bike the street/street twin 900 is and perhaps the only bike you need.

Have considered this bike in the past, having owned a Triumph before. I am 5' 6" and I can easily flat foot on the Speed Twin 900, which is lower than my current Scram 411.

Only had my 2024 Street Twin 900 a short while but i absolutely love it, just makes me smile whilst out on it. I only got back into biking 2 years ago after a 40 year gap and i traded my 650 Versys in for the ST900 and so glad i did, ample power for me,and my style of riding.IMHO it doesn't need a sixth gear as is only doing 3100rpm at 70 in 5th, handling and braking suits me just fine. i am no fast freddy more a steady eddy and i am looking forward to many more miles and smiles before i hang up my helmet. Keep up with the great content.

The interesting thing about short front mudguards, is that most of the mud is already flung off the tyre and onto the engine/radiator, hence the inner surface of the mudguard is likely to be one of the cleanest parts of the bike. But of course a longer mudguard would change that.

I took delivery of a 2021 Speed Twin 3 weeks ago. After first 20metres I realised there was something very wrong with the bike even though it had recommended tyre pressures in it. Rode it home (100km) and added 6 psi to both ends. Much better, but still not as good as it could be. A change of tyre is in its (near) future. Other than that, I'm a happy chappy.

Nicely done. I test rode most of the Triumph line up during last summer's Sturgis Rally. The Speed variants were ok until I rode the T100 and T120. I musc preferred the Ts. Dual clocks and bigger front wheel are more to my liking. Actually, as I near my seventh decade, the T100 would be my choice. Loved the engine and everything just felt and sounded right.

Great review Darcy. I’ve just bought one and would echo your comments. The standard saddle is probably more comfortable from my experience as it takes about 1.5hrs to get saddle sore. Having just traded in from the Speedmaster there is less oomph but more fun on the twisties. A six speed gear box for the occasional motorway driving would be useful but it isn’t a deal breaker as you say.

Great review! (also the Old Man loved the Street Twin I remember in his review a while back). I have a 21 Street Twin and they are such good bikes, as you say, you don't need more power. On a 1500 mile tour I got 72 mpg, the tank at 12 litres seems too small but I think I never let it run low enough, it should easily do 150 between refills. As others have commented, you have a few accessories on that one; the seat, tail tidy, indicators, bar-end mirrors and screen. The original seat has more padding, it's pretty comfortable. Accessories on mine are heated grips, centre stand, grab rail and Fox rear shocks - all recommended. I agree with you that the standard exhausts look and sound great, no need to change them. Any comments on the Pirelli Phantoms? lots of people hate them, I've not changed them yet as they seem reasonable. Triumph now fit the Michelin Road Classic...

Great machine, as you said the power is adequate, more than adequate really, I have much more powerful bikes in my garage (and 1 less powerful 🙂) but having ridden the 900 it’s a really good enjoyable machine, and so much better than those poorly finished underpowered royal blinkin Enfields 😂, I saw in the comments that someone is thinking of trading their RE in on a 900 , well done that man very sensible 👍👍 (word of warning check that any triumph 900 is late 2019 onwards and has the 65PS engine, prior to this they used a soft cam that spoils the engine). PS the only thing that I feel let’s it down is the single clock, it would have been much nicer without those ugly bulges for the idiot lights, and even nicer still if Triumph had spent a few more pounds and fitted a Rev counter.

Cracking review Darcy, I bought one at the beginning of the year and absolutely love it, having had them in the 1970’s and 80’s I wanted this one because it looks like a modern Bonneville not a sixty’s bike, though I totally agree with you that the front mudguard looks nice but isn’t any use, even with a extender so as I ride all year I modified a Royal Enfield Classic 350 mudguard to fit for the winter and not only does it work brilliant but it doesn’t look out of place either, all the best buddy 👍

Good to see you giving a positive review of the 900 Speed Twin, the only negative for me with the bike is the central single instrument pod , it would look so much better with twin clocks (Speedo & Rev counter) other than that it's a great mid weight retro, on another note how are you getting on with your Ruroc helmet ?

I've always like the Speed Twins, but what were they thinking off with that truly terrible bit of bent metal holding the front brake master cylinder. Not the only bike with this, but why not incorporate it into the lever like on the Bobber? Sorry if I'm like a broken record on this subject :-)

All bikes are quick especially if relative to their smaller weight which smaller cc bikes normally have. I have a 250 cafe racer Honda which is quick as anything else on the city roads (upto 70 then it dies). On the open road it might be slightly down on power but still enjoyable. I have an Africa twin too and doesn’t feel that much quicker accelerating just more comfortable and capable at higher speeds

That's the "sweet spot". Same applies with ADV's, Supersport's, naked's and yes, modern classics... Nice blend of torque/power, satisfying enough for most roads and not so much that you're forever trying to find roads where you can take advantage of the extra engine you've bought. I wish Triumph returned back to air/oil cooled engines though. I must be one of the few that prefers the classic sound, feel and tune of the older 360' firing parallel twins.

I bought one when they first came out . Loved the look and sound with the Vance and hinse pipes fitted. Found it soon runs out of puff for a 900 . In away my V7ii does not . On paper the Triumph is more powerful. But the power is relatively high in the Rev range even more so in the newer models with 10 hp more. Power figures are misleading as depends where the power is relative to gearing.

A 900 is pretty awesome in many bikes but the Speed Twin 900 is a parallel twin with a kinda low HP rating. Nm is great but… The 1200 (my bike in the picture) is where it’s at. Sooo grunty, great breaks, lovely gear box and the Sound is to die for! I have the brown quilted seat. Yes it is harder than the standard seat but hard? as this being a 900cc twin with a square engine (bore = stroke) and low strung the milage is really good. (4.1 l / 100km)... in the real world large bore short stroke engines give terrible milage. I think that many modern bikes are far to powerful for the road.. and to get the power they often have large bore to stroke ratios and rev to the moon. a bike like the Moto Guzzi seems like the perfect power for the road with some torque.. 65hp and a wet weight of 203kg.. This is a power to weight ratio of 0.32 hp /kg.. There is a new legislation on sportscars in south Australia.. you need a very special license to drive a car with a power to weight ratio of more than 370hp pr tonne.. This is still crazy fast... A Toyota Supra with the 3.0 turbocharged engine has 383hp and a stunning torque at 368 lb-ft @ 1,800 rpm... and a curb weight of 1540kg... 0.4 hp / kg as a limit on roads bikes might not be a bad idea...

Great review, but as I mentioned in your first impressions video, maybe it would make more sense to review a standard bike. Your observations are absolutely spot on, but the factory saddle is more padded, so the bike is a bit more comfortable for people of our height, and for passengers. Also, judging the looks of a bike with that many add-ons can be tricky. The tail tidy, for one, ruins the line of the bike in my opinion. So do those weird paniers, and the windscreen. They installed bar-end mirrors but left the standard mirror holders even though a flat replacement is available. I understand you have no control over what the importer/reseller gives you, but they should really know better. They also downgraded the standard tires: the Speed Twin 900 comes with Michelins, your test bike has the Pirelli that were stock on the Street Twin (same bike before the 2023 rebranding). And the color scheme is not current: the black Speed Twin 900 has the triangular Triumph badge on the tank. Couple more things: those are the optional LED indicators, and Triumph has two passenger grab handles, with or without a parcel shelf, in the parts catalogue.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan as I said, dealerships/importers should know better. Either provide factory bikes or at least a list of installed options. I mean, some of people shopping for that model may recognize extra bits and bobs, but just as many others may think that the test bike is what they can get from the dealership at list price, when actually that bike has close to two thousand quid worth of Triumph aftermarket parts…

Your Motorbike is equipped with the older Pirelli Tyres, which unfortunately don't really do it justice. The 900 comes with Michelin Road Classic Tyres nowadays, which are far better. The Bar End Mirrores are highly recommended, as the standard versions are pretty much useless. The quilted seat looks nice, but its ergonomics leave a bit to be desired. Did a "day trip" from Germany to England last summer, and was very pleased with the standard seat on these 650 mls. The headlamp is not the brightest, but can easily be upgraded with a LED-bulb by Philips or Osram. I never missed the 6th gear, not even on the German Autobahn, instead i find the 6th of the 1200HT engines being too long. The Speed Twin 1200 is a completely different animal than the 900, as it's a proper sports bike. Far too sporty for my taste.
