Tristan Murail: Tellur (1977) - Andrea De Vitis

Tellur by Tristan Murail

"Tellur starts off as a kind of wager: how can one produce the long sound continua necessary for my work on procedures, transitions and evolutions, on an instrument that produces brief, plucked sounds ? I found the answer by using the flamenco rasgueado technique and even, more generally, by employing the style and sound of flamenco. The way attacks on the strings, for example, are dealt with is particularly delicate and careful: two textures can be produced on one string simultaneously that evolve in different ways (by disassociating the percussive sound caused by the nails on the strings - a sound that has an exact and controllable frequency - and the sound produced by the resonance of the strings themselves). I also used passages that move progressively from sound to noise (gradual dampening of the strings), the progressive appearance of harmonics, of harmonic resonances of flat chords, unusual fingerings for harmonics, multiple trills using both hands... etc. Tellur is a typical example of a score whose content is derived essentially from sound material provided by the instrument itself - even if the instrument is stretched and used in such a way as to subject it to requirements of style." Thanks for this post. It was an interesting listen. You've reminded me of the question: When does sound become music? A question I'm not qualified to answer ... except for myself.

Thank you! There are many studies on this topic and different perspectives. In my opinion, an organised system of sounds is music, like an organised system of words makes a speech. If you look at the score, this piece is carefully "organised", in the choice of the single notes, their timing, their transition, as well as in the overall structure.

@@AndreaDeVitis I can imagine the score looks ... unconventional. It seems that some music is designed for the intellect as opposed to the emotions. I've always admired Alan Holdsworth's guitar playing, but I've never understood what he's trying to communicate. His music was over my head.

For me, it becomes music when one can relate to the emotion expressed by the sound.

Great version. I have heard 3 or 4 performances of this piece, and this one is my favourite. Great rigour with the score and a very good balance between tempo and let ring the sounds of this beautiful piece. Thanks!
