I’m curious to what a “hammer knife” is too. Not sure if it’s the multi tool knife with a hammer head or a dive knife that’s a dagger with integral guards. Many different things that it could be 🤷🏼♂️

Thank you again for that nice video of yours! You have that great ability to explain stuff in a way so that it's really easy to understand. And again answering your question, please explain distal tapers, weight distribution and how to grind distal tapers and distal tapering the tang. There is too less videos out there that explain them well. Peter johnsson does a good job but it's for most people a bit laborious to watch those two hours and he's only talking about swords

Very helpful! It makes sense now to push and pull with opposite hands, not both. Sometimes I get a little dip in my bevel line but I usually work it out by gently going back over that area with the bevel flat against the belt. This should help to prevent that from happening in the first place. Thank man!

I agree with the file guide... Haven't been able to get that to feel right. I feel like they probably work best without over hang or trizacts? Either way... I'm addicted to the work rest grinding now! Cheers sir.

Some people swear by them but I find it easier to eyeball it. Thanks for watching.
I do a lot of filing when I work on bevels in order to keep them straight. I have a medical condition that causes my hands to shake, so I tend to end up with a wavy bevel line. Needless to say I don't make very many knives because of the time it takes me to get one done.
@TyrellKnifeworks

Do you use a rest when grinding? That helps a lot for unsteady hands. Thanks for watching.
@derangedmetalworks9489
Жыл бұрын
@@TyrellKnifeworks yes I do, and you are correct it does help. Unfortunately it doesn't help myself enough. I don't mind doing the extra work though. I'm a disabled veteran so I have the time to kill, and I don't set unachievable deadlines for myself.
I saw Adam Savage making a guard for a short sword yesterday and he used a spindle sander to get a good inside bevel (like that of a karambit.) I hadn't considered it before, as I always just use the belt sander, but it seemed like an interesting idea to try out. Might also be helpful to use a contact wheel with the sander in the horizontal position.
@TyrellKnifeworks
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that might work well. All these techniques just need practice and understanding and then it becomes easy. When I show the false edge and distal taper grinding, you might have some "aha" moments as well. 😉

@@TyrellKnifeworks Looking forward to it!!
I still use my nortic edge bevel jig with the built in file guide. I'm trying to get away from it because it just takes to much time. It works really great so it makes it hard to put it down
@TyrellKnifeworks
Жыл бұрын
I do tell people it just delays the inevitable of learning freehand grinding. I found jigs just too clumsy and time consuming. They have their uses if you’re doing a lot of repetitive work though. Thanks for watching
I’d like to add, if your grinding with scribe lines don’t grind to your lines with a low grit belt. Get close then go up in grit so that you meet your lines as you get to your final grit finish. Or compensate for more material to be removed when scribing lines. Hope that makes sense. I know Denis will get what I’m saying. 😉
@TyrellKnifeworks
Жыл бұрын
Yes, I even mentioned that very thing... put your scribe lines lower than you think because pre-heattreat grinding is only one part of it. 😉. Thanks for watching, Erik!

What is the benefit of a flat ground blade as opposed to a hollow ground blade?
@krissteel4074
Жыл бұрын
Mostly strength behind the cutting edge, the more metal it has behind it, the more resistant to chipping and roll overs on that edge. Hollow grinds are good in the sense that you can get a very thin amount of metal behind the cutting edge, but they tend to suffer from 'wedging' into softer materials as well as having poorer lateral strength if there's a twist or shock while its cutting, which can cause irreparable cracks. Like most tools, they suit a specific purpose and will do ok in some tasks, less well in others and completely unsuitable for some- basically there's only so far you can get with materials science before you just need a bit more of said material for the tool to work properly
