Trikonasana with Dr. Geeta Iyengar (26 minutes)

With this video, recorded in India in 2009, we wanted to give a taste of the uniqueness of Dr. Geeta S Iyengar's teachings. Not so so many have the opportunity to go to India and experience the Living Tradition of Iyengar Yoga as teach by the Masters themselves.
Notice how Dr. Iyengar bring to her teaching of Trikonasana the concept of Ekagrata (one pointedness of the mind). To quote her bother, Yoga Master Prashant Iyengar:
"the mind needs to be taught the pose since the mind has to assume the pose too."

What I love about Iyengar Yoga is how the entire Iyengar system is transmitted to all teachers and they teach the same instructions as the Iyengars. My teacher gives the same instructions, all of them, for every trikonasana.

There is a deep and true love of yoga in the seemingly severe insistance of this teacher, and its because she cares about bringing awareness.

This is beautiful. That teaching style is solely based on love and a great passion of wanting the students to get it. I only remember my hardest teachers, the "nice" ones I learned from as well, but it's a totally different energy. Don't mistake it for being mean: these type of teachers are always sweethearts.

First off, thank you for posting these very clear videos. It give us, whom have not been to Pune a glimpse of what classes at the Institute is like. This is not a complaint but an observation. As long as I have been practicing Iyengar yoga (going on 20 years), we still beat Utthita Trikonasana to death, even in advance classes. I am sure these folks who travel all to way to India from all over the world have been practicing Iyengar Yoga for years. 26 minutes worth of Utthita Trikonasana is an overkill.

Kevin Nguyen I would agree in many other asanas but this particular asana defines guruji in his physical practice so I can give an understanding nod to trikonasna for this length of time. Also they did not stay in the asana the entire time, it was workshopped in a way only the Iyengars could. Sending light and love! Hopefully one day we can see one another in Pune!

The question is, am I letting all her comments disturb me? Do I have the ability the listen to the content of her comments or am I getting disturbed by the tone of her comments? Is she deliberately hurting with her tone? Or do I have the maturity to look beyond that? The bottom line is, there is nothing outside of me which can make me calm, or disturb my peace.

But thats just me. Lots of other people like it and we are all different. I wonder if she ever meditates? Isn't that what yoga is all about:-)

Everyone in that room has at least 8 years experience and they know how to do triconasana. She, being the observant teacher that she was, has noticed a fine point that they can improve and is teaching this detail in the posture. You may have noticed that she expects a certain level of understanding.

Yoga is not about having a beautiful, thin body. You can do lots of Yoga, and be very very good at it, and yet end up with a big bum and lots of fat rolls round your waste. This does not mean that your Yoga is vain and superficial, nor that you are not doing enough of it. It is just that Yoga is weird in that respect. Puzzling. I am guessing that too much ghee does not help either...
