    Did you watch the post race interview? Perez was "happy for the team" but actually really unhappy for himself. He talked about further improving himself. Perez has a tasted blood. He now has his eyes set on Hamilton and the number two championship position in this season and if RB keep him for 2022 (why wouldn't they) you can be he's eyeing the championship title. That's the attitude Marko and Horner look for.

    When Crofty was slating Perez on like lap 10 for being 5 seconds behind, I was practically screaming at my TV - he was matching Hamilton's pace down to nearly the tenth, and he was in clean air, and he's possibly the best driver on the grid in regards to tire conservation (though Aston has been making a bid). It was a risky strategy, but it was easy (I thought) to see what Red Bull were trying to do, and it worked flawlessly. I don't think it's fair to say Merc had a bad strategy day (though you could argue in hindsight that they should've put Bottas on a 2-stop), I think it's much more fair to say that Red Bull absolutely 100% nailed the strategy perfectly. Truly impressive stuff

  • @Chuckiele

    @Chuckiele

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@gelmir7322 it doesnt matter how good or bad your tyres are. If you get undercut, you need to cover. Within one lap after Bottas' pit Red Bull saw how strong the undercut is and pitted Verstappen even though his tyres were still fine. With the data gained from Bottas Mercedes should have expected Red Bull to pit and thus also pit Hamilton. That single lap could have been enough to stay ahead but that wouldnt have mattered once Verstappen pitted the second time anyway. That was the point where Mercedes really fucked up. Mercedes already knew that Bottas' tyres wouldnt last nearly as long as Hamiltons and thus would eventually pit again. They only kept him out to block Verstappen but he was so far behind that by the time he was eventually overtaken, Verstappens tyres were still young and there was no way Bottas would have been an obstruction. At the moment Verstappen pitted, they should have pitted Bottas to cover Perez.

    The interesting thing though is that though Bottas has been the designated second driver for Merc, his presence has been useful only when they are 2v1 vs Max. His qualification capabilities aside, race pace nor tire management was a strong suit for him. Perez said he struggled for a few laps but kept within 5 seconds of the leaders and had cleaner air. Bottas kept trying to strike at Verstappen and used his tires much faster. If instead he acted more like a second driver and preserved his tires like Perez, the maybe verstappen doesn’t do the undercut that easily. Bottas is going to be a sitting duck many more times this season for that reason that Perez probably second only to Hamilton in tire management and takes the chances he gets clinically making him a better race day driver than Bottas

  • @Bahamuttiamat

    Designated 2nd drivers aren't allowed to win. Mercedes treats bottas fairly. Or else why would they pit him first and trigger the string of undercuts that ultimately cost them the win? The lap 17 pitstop was to protect bottas from his flat spotted tires which were cause massive vibrations through the suspension. It wasn't to help lewis who was slowly eking ahead of verstappen.

Turkey last year(where checo despite finishing 2nd with same strat was a long way behind lewis), Baku this year and in france he kept a strong pace. Maybe checo can show some battles vs hamilton that will show he is better. We'll have to see. And I am a huge Checo fan trust me.. @@Bahamuttiamat See this is what I thought too.. That Merc are treating him fairly every season but that just isnt the case. Anytime Max has come close to Lewis, its usually Bottas that takes the hit. Barcelona, Hungary and other situations. Maybe they are trying to show that he is treated fairly but atleast this year, he has to accept that he is a designated 2nd driver. If they dont, there will be many more races where Bottas will push hard early on and end up using his tires faster. In terms of tire management, he is the weakest in the top 4. I would even say Lando, Vettel, Gasly and Ricciardo are better than him at that.

    I believe this is not the year for Checo to win the championship but definitely the key for RB to win the constructors championship. Time will come, after securing his seat for the next seasons and getting more time to get used to the RB16B to fix his flaws (qualifying, starts and rain races) he will be attempting for winnings and not only constructors points. We also need to be realistic that mistakes will also come and we need to be patient with him. Great performance so far, expecting only more and more from Checo.

    Great analysis! Good to see someone who didn't bash Checo's early performance. I know that there are folks like Crofty or Matt who all they want is to see a 4-car all-out bloodbath (therefore bashing Checo and calling this "2-on-1 against poor Max"), but Red Bull just proved there are more ways to deploy their two drivers with success: They put Checo on a different strategy (thanks to his superb tire management), while being close enough to hold back Merc from putting forward any funny strategy, like a sniper protecting Max's back. Once it became clear that both Mercs (especially Bottas) couldn't keep with neither RB's pace, "Let's get them"... and got were them.

    Chain Bear really embraces the teacher aspect of being an F1 fan... I only started watching last year and most of this is quite basic to me but for someone just getting into it.. it's really helpful info. As with the actual race.. it was quite interesting to see Verstappen do to Mercedes what they had done to them twice before.
