The Hungarian Grand Prix was weird. Strategies seemed to get a bit loosey goosey. So let's use this opportunity to look at exactly what goes into a race strategy.

Ferrari have three strategists. One who decides when to pit, one who decides which tyre to use, and one who is keeping an eye on what is happening on track. They had a bit of a falling out a couple years ago and are no longer on speaking terms.

You missed the Haas being first to find out just how garbage the hards were to race on due to Kmag's insatiable meatball craving and yet STILL putting them on Mick's car (despite having the extra set of mediums) to ruin his race after a great first stint. It's even more shocking than Ferrari's blunder. Also, AM having Seb hold station behind a slower Lance for ~10 laps, leaving him no time to overtake the hards in front when they finally let him past. He could've gotten both Alpines and maybe even Norris otherwise

I listened to a lot of the Pit channels during races and Sebastian Vettel was at some point basically running the Ferrari strategy from his cockpit. Constantly inquiring about weather and track conditions, tire health, track position of other cars and delta times. Suggesting alternative tire and pit strategies etc. He communicated a lot more with his team than other drivers. This in addition to the already high Workflows drivers already have during a race. He sometimes even overrode what his pit wall ordered/suggested him to do usually his idea of a strategy worked out better. You could tell that he didn’t trust his pit wall to make the right calls. Incidents like the one in Hungary show why

The Red Bulls, Mercedes, and Lando Norris looked like absolute rock stars at the Hungarian Grand Prix. 1:50 It’s interesting to think that Horner expected Max to go from P10 to P5 because under those targets both Red Bull drivers really delivered as Max ended up P1 and Sergio was able to go from P11 to P5 whilst still protecting Max’s pitstops from both Mercedes and Ferarri’s on track. Great explanation on the tire compounds, one thing though is the working temp ranges don't necessarily linearly go up with compound hardness, Pirelli has tended to alternate high- and low-working range tires in the range throughout history; when the compounds were named (HS-US-SS-S-M-H-EH) the US-S-H tires were low working range and the HS-SS-M-EH tires were high working range (or maybe it was the other way around), and then the softness is built into the tire for its working range. Not sure if Pirelli is still doing that anymore but I would guess they are, to offer a variety of working ranges to teams when they select 3 out of 5 compounds.

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past... So I got into F1 on KZread because of Chainbear, videos watched every GP weekend. Over time, the algorithm recommends other F1 channels, mostly mainstream, Tommo, the race etc. Then a bit more niche and then really small gossipy ones. And after a year of progressively less good content this is the first Chainbear video I get recommended and there I am thinking, "thank goodness he's alive, what was wrong. Oh, nothing, he's been posting regularly, it's just that KZread is today too complicated. And before y'all say it, I'm not pressing the bell.

Ferrari had the chance to have their drivers on different strategies as well, either could have been on the S-M-M strategy like Max/Perez and the other on M-M-S like Hamilton, they instead had both drivers on the same strategy. The situation of Mclaren and Alonso with the hards brought up a very good point. Mclaren didn't have a second set and HAD to factor in the hards since they didn't have enough tires. Alonso used the hards, but they correctly used the strength of the hards, they did a one-stop which is what the hards allowed them to do. But Ferrari with Leclerc, they forced themselves to react to the cars on DIFFERENT strategies than them, and effectively played themselves into a corner when they reacted to Max's 2nd pit. They could have just kept Leclerc out for longer so the softs can survive the 3rd stint, but they wanted to react to Max's pit. They got what they wanted, they came out in front of Max after the pit, then Max just overtook Leclerc anyway since the hards were trash.

True, but because they still had to use the softs, they were going to lose track position to Verstappen anyway, which is not something that's supposed to happen when you start that much in front. It seems Ferrari's Russell-beating strategy left them vulnerable to Verstappen.

At this point, i'm beginning to think that Ferrari and Leclerc are poking each other in the eye out of spite. The only person with any sanity seems to be Sainz.

Hi, just wanted to say I found the lap time graphs quite hard to read due to the colors changing seemingly randomly with the stints. For example and maybe especially at 9:06 with everything being some shade of red; the one at 10:02 is much better.

I definitely got the impression that Ferrari were gambling on rain arriving, and thought they would never have to use a second slick compund.

  • @jorge8596

That does not add up in any way. If that were true they would've gone long on the 2nd stint waiting for the rain ro arrive, and if they pitted they would have put the softs on for many reasons

Why does the rain reset the track? I thought the rubber gets stuck to the asphalt, is it that easy for water falling from the sky to dislodge it?

I don't think anyone looked at the average August temps for the race. I think they had up to date weather forecasts. I don't know how far off they were, but certainly not by 14C, not the day ahead or the hour ahead forecast. The showers may have been harder to predict even an hour ahead and may have dropped the temperature or cooled the pavement by a few degrees.

Do you think that the better mix of tyres across the weekend with the soft typically being a quali tyre and the hard a good race tyre is more to do with Pirelli getting their compound steps and choices right, or something to do with the new cars? In the past we often saw Pirelli claiming to be very aggressive with compounds but the racing repeatedly turning up boring one-stops. Even with free tyre choice for the Q3 runners we aren't having that so much now.

Hamilton outpacing Verstappen despite driving a car that's worse in virtually every way is hopefully a preview of the second-half of the season. Max may have already secured a second championship, but at the very least he needs a genuine threat race-to-race.

The Red Bull strategy really paid off handsomely. Verstappen was able to quickly pass the midfield cars (the Alpines offered some resistance, while Norris' softs were gone within ten laps for some reason) and then he was able to undercut Hamilton at the first round of stops and Russell at the second round. Ferrari tried to cover him by pitting Leclerc early, but this backfired greatly as we know. Sainz decided to go much longer, so he lost track position to Verstappen as well, and he didn't really have the pace to regain it. Instead, he also lost a place to Hamilton, who was on even fresher tires at the end. Sainz would later say he just didn't have the pace, which seems right. Leclerc was faster in the race and with Sainz' strategy he might have been able to challenge Verstappen for the win, though his pace on the softs was not very impressive either.

The difference between RB and ferrari is that RB manages to change their strategy just from the preparation lap (I forgot the word starting with letter R) to the grid to deduce that hard is utter-garbage. Whereas Ferrari can't tell that even if it is proven to be utter-garbage by many other teams.
