You turned back at the right time brother. They were really trying to keep you and your camera away from something that likely would’ve become a quick problem. I used to be a cop and security pro and was immediately picking up cues at the top of the hill. Stay safe David.
Whenever I go to Medellin, I never bring up his name, as it's a very sensitive topic for many.

Took a wrong turn walking in Bogota and got lost heading back to my hotel. I didn’t panic, brought up Waze on my iphone. Asked a young kid on a bike who verified I was heading in the right direction. I’m glad I know some spanish otherwise it would have been difficult communicating with him. Learn some basic Spanish guys when visiting Colombia. It’s a must.

Just a comment and not a criticism @tonyonsax . . . iPhones stand out in South America. I use an android when I am out on excursions and leave my iPhone for areas and situations where I don't have to think twice about pulling it out of my pocket.
@tonyonsax

@@jlennertz4018 I’m really discreet when using my iphone. I don’t pull it out around people or in a busy area and when I do pull it out, I make sure no one is close enough to snatch it from me. I wear a flat low profile shoulder bag under my jacket. You can’t even tell I am carrying anything. Surprisingly enough I noticed in Bogota that a lot of Colombians don’t really hide their phones when talking on them. I did not expect to see that based on all the stories I’ve heard.

A man who murders 3,000 people including cops, judges and children - does not have any goodness in his heart. He helped the neighborhoods to buy public support and guarantee his Saftey in his hiding places. Plain and simple.

Good luck on the mayor getting rid of that neighborhood. Pablo built more houses and schools for the people there than the government did. Regardless of his motivation those people's grand parents that got houses from and their families still love the guy. History is sometimes based on perspective. The people there have a completely different perspective from other parts or town. Good call on the bailing out after the whistle. Stay safe.

many people do not like being filmed and their home neighborhoods treated as objects of curiosity. just taking out your phone and filming is an amazingly disrespectful thing to do, for many.
Always trust your gut. Good video David.
Trusting your instinct is always the way to go 👍🏼 Oh and the perfectly timed thumbnail shot deserves a few thousand extra views haha
I'm sure you noticed the small apartments on the way up those stairs were very ominous looking. The area was a bit darker and concealed. It's said that Escobar once had more $100 dollar 💵 bills in his possession than all of the United States. There are many properties of his on nearby islands that have been abandoned - HUGE MANSIONS!! It was the US gov't who provided Colombia with the surveillance and tracking technology to locate Escobar. 30 years ago the tracking technology was far less sophisticated. Radio signals were used to track his phone. The USA provided what Colombia needed... but the Colombians had to "take him out." They weren't there to capture him... they were there to execute him. Was he helping the poor people of Medellin or helping himself??! BOTH!!
Better to be safe David. Let Volpe or Kurt go into the danger zone 😂
@spirittravels.

Kurt mostly doesn't go to dangerous areas. The exceptions were Siloue in Cali, where he didn't even enter the area. Or a Brazilian Favela where he went with a guide. Most people have no understanding of the the fact that even the Touristic areas have risks, as these areas attract the Criminals.

in 2021 I went to Medellin with my Puerto Rican friends. I am a total gringo so having my Spanish speaking friends along was needed. I wanted to go to BPE, so we did. We parked by the tour bus parking at the entrance on the main street into the barrio. We walked in and were met by very nice, and honest people. One of the locals who live in BPE his entire life, gave us a tour around the place. And we ended up drinking at one of the street side bars for the next 8 hours. We bought beers for our local tour guide, and other locals who wondered why a white gringo in his 50's was in the hood. I didnt feel unsafe at all. I was aware of my surroundings and didnt let my guard down, just in case (just like in Medellin proper and Lleras and Poblado). We left BPE at midnite, a little drunk and the locals we hung out with, walked us to our car at the end to make sure we were safe. True PE was a ruthless killer narco terrorist, and he built the barrio for the people whom he later used to hide him out and keep safe from law enforcement. In Colombia, you dont bring up PE, most of the people hate him, but like David said, the BPE people mostly like him and are grateful for their free houses. The houses by the way that were given to people, were handed down thru the families, and now there are very few OG people in BPE, and their kids and their kids kids are in the houses. They pass down free of charge, and they just pay power etc. Every country has their ugly past. We in the USA also, with some uglyness going on presently. Thats life.
