The LAP Project brings you our first "posthumous" upload - Triad Stone, one of the finest "traditional FMV" games for the LaserActive!
Triad Stone is a port of a Data East Laserdisc arcade game of the same name. A similar port, Strahl for the 3DO, was released a few years later. Strahl, however, lacked a couple of levels from the full version of Triad Stone, and had a completely different (and arguably superior) soundtrack. This version is much more faithful to the arcade original.
Gameplay in Triad Stone works similarly to Dragon's Lair - a quick-time-event prompt pops up on the screen, and you must respond to it in time or face your death. Triad Stone adds a new layer of complexity in the form of the Sword button; when a sword prompt comes up, you must press the sword button AND the direction of the sword prompt simultaneously, keeping you on your toes. There are also some button-mashing segments.
The story of Triad Stone concerns Ash Bel Luffe, a young member of the Dar Nahn clan of Erin Island. The island, enjoying a long era of prosperity thanks to the power of the Triad Stone, has been thrown into peril by the evil King Barrol after he broke the stone into three pieces. It's up to Ash to reunite the Triad Stone and seal the wicked forces summoned by King Barrol within the stone once again.
While the story and gameplay of Triad Stone are fairly straightforward, it's the visuals of the game that truly shine. This game has 80's anime written all over it in the best way, from Ash's magnificent pompadour to the coloring of the lush backgrounds. It's truly art in motion, and while the LaserActive's 240p field interpolation does make the video look a little aliased, the game runs so buttery smooth that you're likely not to notice.
The game has some notable gameplay characteristics that are unusual for a game of its type. Triad Stone is presented in a style similar to a Legend of Zelda game - there is an overworld map, which often contains copious amounts of backstory, and from which the player chooses their next destination. The game can be completed in a nonlinear fashion, but completing areas in a certain order does impact other ones (for example, the flower fairy area is much harder to complete without the Magic Stone, since Ash is not yet immune to the psychedelic magic of the fairies). In addition, the game can be played in either English or Japanese, which can be set in the options menu.
One last note: this game is DIFFICULT. Play it on the easiest setting if you want a prayer of beating it. It is possible to earn more credits with good performance, and you're going to need every single one of them to reach the end.

Dude, you are awesome. My brother and I played this as kids and to this day we still say "power Power POWER!" all the time. It's been so many years I had forgotten where we got it from. Thanks for bringing us both back down memory lane.

Most people probably never played it because the console cost $900. In 1993! Adjusted for inflation, that's over $1700 nowadays.

This is probably a dumb question, but why does it seem like the animation audio only comes out of the left speaker? It seems odd listening to this in stereo when it plays like that. Before the audio cues for button inputs popped out I thought my headset was broken for a moment.

This is likely how that particular uploader ripped it. I know the game not only is stereo mixed but also supports Dolby Surround. Maybe they screwed with the Dolby Surround settings and didn't mix the video right? (Also, LOVE your work with St. Giga and the Sattelaview!)

LOL I'm just seeing this now, 3 years later. I recorded this using a crappy Dazzle HD S-video recorder and could only get mono out from the LA I was using.

You have a good eye! The character designer for Southern Cross and Dunbine, Tomonori Kogawa, handled character design on this as well. He was also animation director for L-GAIM, though character design there was done by Mamoru Nagano.

This was before Strahl actually. Strahl is a (3Do) re-release of this initial game. This one seems to have better graphics reading and less lags than the 3Do version though, which is so strange tbh. 😅

I feel so bad for whoever paid $120 (in the 1990s mind you) for a "game" comprised of nothing but quick time events.

Not to mention that this game has a silent protagonist with a sword, and a villain who wants to get 3 of a magical thing in order to achieve ultimate power (Gee, where have I heard that before?...)

I don’t know if they can. Especially considering these things cost $900 in 1993, which would be over $1700 nowadays because of inflation.
