Sanderson was watching Princess bride with his wife. She told him that I wish she had more agency. He wrote the book to fulfil her wish.

In terms of Princess Bride comparisons, Sanderson said he was inspired to write it based on the question: What if Buttercup went in an adventure to rescue Wesley instead of blindly accepting his death. So Tress was inspired by Princess Bride but I don’t think the book is meant to have many similarities beyond that.

This was some of the most fun I have had reading in a long time! I’m currently on book 10 of the Wheel of Time, and this was an excellent break to refresh me before I finish up that hulking beast of a series.

Finally someone else felt the similarities to Reepicheep and Voyage of the Dawn Treader! That was what I felt most strongly (even though its been a long time since I read that). Could be because we are both roughly the same age that we have different references from much of booktube, but I enjoyed the book a lot, enjoyed the humor (which to me reminded me more of Brandon's humor that comes across in his podcast or other talks), but yeah I didn't really get princess bride so much as Narnia as the vibe when I was reading. It wasn't just the animal companion, it was also a sea that didn't quite work exactly like our sea (although obviously Sanderson's world building is much stronger and different).

Mike if you like this style of Brandon’s writing, that is the fun slant, you should try the Skyward series, especially the first book. It’s a lot of fun, it’s exciting, has some great characters and overall the story is awesome. Oh yeah. It also has a likable kind of animal companion.

I've been thinking about picking up a Sanderson book for a while because of how much he is hyped on booktube, just held off until I got back in the sci-fi/fantasy mood and took the leap with Tress and absoultely loved it, I had so much fun! You're right about the banter, I found it a joy to read and laughed out loud a lot. I went in knowing nothing about the Cosmere or who Hoid was, so I'm kind of glad this was my first experience. Princess Bride is one of my all time favorites and I think Brandon captured the fairy-tale adjacent feeling at the start and the just very silly humor, but he's made it his own.

I absolutely loved Tress's character growth in this novel. Near the end, she ends up asking herself a question I've never heard any other character ask in any fantasy book, and I thought "there's no way Sanderson is going to end the book this way." Part of me would have loved it if he did, but it wouldn't have fit the tone of the book, so I understand why he didn't.

The only comparison I can think of is Tress being like a reverse Princess Bride, with Charlie being the Buttercup in the story and Tress a stand in for Wesley. One of the characters is seemingly unattainable because of status and the other becomes a pirate in a grand gesture of being with/rescuing them.

I agree that the claims that "if you like The Princess Bride, you'll love Tress!" isn't the most universally accurate statement. Where The Princess Bride comes into this is that Sanderson and his wife were watching the movie and thought, "What if Buttercup went to rescue Wesley instead of accepting that he was dead." So it's intentionally different from The Princess Bride, yet inspired by it.

Now I need to decide - should I wait about 10 weeks for my library hold, or should I pay $9.99 at Amazon to get it today? Also, I'm wondering if Tress is suitable for my 12-year old son?
