What Causes Excess Mucus In The Throat?
The stomach, nose, sinuses, and throat can all produce mucus, so getting a good diagnosis requires a medical examination. Possible causes of excess mucus can be food allergies, acid reflux from the stomach, or an infection. The consistency of mucus in the throat also varies depending on what is going on in your body.
Elderly woman suffering from excess mucus touching her chest while talking to the nurse
Common causes of too much mucus in the throat include a cold or flu, acute bronchitis, sinusitis or pneumonia. When mucus runs from the back of the nose down the throat after a meal, this could indicate an allergy. Causes can be mild, chronic, or severe (the onset of congestive heart failure), so seek medical advice.
Symptoms of mucus overproduction
Symptoms of excess mucus are coughing up phlegm, shortness of breath, or congestion in the throat. If the cause of mucus in the throat is a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection, symptoms may be different. They may include fever, itchy eyes, a runny nose, headache, and difficulty breathing. Frequent throat-clearing may be a symptom of stomach problems, as mucus formation is a protective mechanism against acidity.
What foods help excess mucus?
Some food and drinks tend to lead to a build-up mucus, while others relieve it. Things that help include broccoli, berries, oranges and greens, fatty fish like trout, and olive oil. Cayenne pepper, ginger, lemon, and herbal teas are also beneficial. Things that can aggravate mucus build-up include milk, soy, cheese, yoghurt, caffeine, processed meat, and alcohol.
Further tips and remedies
Many people with excess mucus find that sleeping with their head raised on an extra pillow helps. This is because elevating the head and shoulders in this way relieves congested nasal passages. Quit smoking and stay away from irritants and polluted air whenever possible. Blow your nose, inhale steam, gargle with salt and warm water, raise the humidity, diffuse essential oils, drink warm liquids. Remember dehydration is also bad, so make sure to drink a lot of water.

I developed a very bad cold followed with awful green build up of mucus. I discovered wild oregano oil capsules quite by accident. It cleared my breathing and helped my lungs and dried up my runny nose. I felt great afterwards and wondered why I'd suffered a couple of weeks of sleepless nights when I could have used this remedy. Anyway I now use it regularly to help my bronchitis. I don't like to take any medication!

Postnasal drip? Absolutely that is 100% of her problem. I have tried every allergy medication on the market. She used to use Dristan up her nose in the 70s and 80s and destroyed her sense of smell. She constantly blows her nose and nothing makes it stop so I don’t know we have to tackle that but she’s 89 and it has never stopped. It’s like her body rejects itself and is trying to get rid of something.

Vigorously wash your hands before, during and after each usage. Then thoroughly clean and disinfect bottle after each usage. Store the bottle and the other contents in a safe dust-free area. The total amount of time shouldn’t take more than 3-4 Hours. Again, sounds like a great idea. Thank you

Informative presentation thank you Dr. S. I personally use dandelion tea, oregano oil and Acv mix.to manage my bout with this issue. Amazinglyrics I discovered in my garage Aloe Vera juice I bought in 2022. I poured 8 Oz in cup and sipped slowly. Most of phlegm came up with ease. That freed up my lungs to breath easy after a year of wheezing for a year or more with this condition. I think I'm on the right path. I had my first nap with wheezing in a year. It's been 6 hours since and lungs are still clear. Not 100% yet. This crap is dug in. Update you in a week or so as to my success or failure.

My kid is a cesarean born and formula fed one. He was not afforded the jump start needed to adjust to the micro world around him. Going to school exposed him to the trillions of microbial obstacles to the point he took a box of tissues with him for years. Kids called him Linus and sneezy. We took him to several doctors who advised to remove his tonsils, reduced the size of his turbinates and prescribed cocktails of allergie medications. On our end, we bought a Navage, converted the central air system to include a UV light and an expensive $100 hepa filter and a host of other expensive things. On his 17th year a miracle happened. 90% or more of his symptoms went away and he behaved more like the rest of the kids. It turned out that my kid was born too pure and was reacting to everyone and everything around him. It took 17 years for his body to catch up. The efforts placed on him to have a better life could have been avoided if he was born conventionally and was breast fed. Go figure. So if your kid fits this profile, we have spared you the guess work. Needless to say, the doctors made plenty of money and made more for others. When they say you need a cesarean section and you don't want to deal with the pain of breast feeding, you better think about all of the humiliation and suffering you kid is about to experience in life.

My question is: I have always been told that nasal washer/Neti pot wash, could only be done with distilled water and clean salt that usually comes in a packet. I am concerned about adding those other ingredients to the nasal wash because I heard it can go to the brain. Please clarify this.

I visited my doctor today, and was told that the Neti pot could damage your throat. I use a pot of boiling water put some sort of menthol in it, i.e., vicks, menthol in it and it does the job. THAT's only me.

1:26 Hi Maam. In 2021 I was admitted in hospital cause I drank drain cleaner trying to commit suicide. I had a bone broken in my throat which the doctors tried to fix. They said I had a lot of acid in my body. They gave me tablets. After that my life never went back to what it was. Sometimes when I eat I have some mucus blocking the food to go down and will be forced to force it to come out of my mouth. I have a big problem of swallowing food and meat. My mouth is always dry and pink in colour. I know what I did was wrong but I was going through a rough time. I wanted to see myself dead but everything didn't go according to my way. Please advise me

Hi Ravi, well, I suppose you have Laryngopharyngeal reflux which that acid comes up into your sinuses. The most important factor for you is your diet and lifestyle...avoid spicy and fried food, coffee, and alcohol, instead use more vegetables. Don't eat any type of liquid half an hour before, during, and half an hour after your meal. don't eat anything about 1 hour before bed and use an extra pillow. hope it helps😇❤

I have nasal problems all my live. And now with throat musus I can't breath threw my nose when I sleep even with nasal airway and all kinds of allergy medications.I always get dry mouth which nasal spays don't work and using over 3 days acording to instructions and doses use can make your systems worse, according to a ENT. That it makes more blood vessels and cause it less effective when used over a long period. I have other sinus problems also thay whe I get up my nasal passages get stopped that I have to cough it up and somtimes get clots in the nasal area. I have been to a ENT and he coudn't really help me other and prescribing me with steriods and anti-bionics which didn't help , that I need to go to an alligest . .

Hi, thank you for your comment. Here's what I recommend to help manage your nasal and sinus issues. First, let's visit an allergist to see if allergies are a factor and do a sinus CT scan or MRI if needed to check for structural issues. Try using a saline nasal rinse daily and a humidifier at night to keep your nasal passages moist. Staying hydrated is important, so drink plenty of water. Add anti-inflammatory foods into your diet can also help. Avoid irritants like smoke and strong odors. And At night, try elevating your head to reduce congestion. Hope it helps ;)
