Treatment for Cervicogenic Headaches | Tim Keeley | Physio REHAB

#neckpain #physio #treatment
Cervicogenic headaches usually present like a tension headache, where the pain is emanating from the cervical spine and then radiates through the back of the head, around the side of the head and even into the eye. Most common origin of this is around C2 and C3 and usually on one side more than the other. Most people present with a headache and a really tender spot in the base of the skull, as well as related painful muscular trigger points in the upper trapezius and sometimes the levator scapulae. The occipital muscles are also very tender and there is stiffness and loss of range of movement, usually into rotation of the cervical spine.
In the clinic we use a mixture of treatments to help improve the range of movement of the neck, reduce joint stiffness, muscle spasm and tightness - and decrease the pain. In this video I will show you some soft tissue release and mobilisation techniques for use for the upper cervical spine. Don’t forget to check out PART 2 when we work on muscle strengthening and range of movement exercises - as well as some scapular stability work to help people fully recover and prevent the headaches coming back.

I had these headaches and neck pain for 3 months and my doctors and PT did not alleviate the condition at all. In fact, it was getting worse. Just to try it, I discarded my pillow completely and just slept with my head on the mattress mostly sleeping on my back but also on the sides. It's hard to do to begin with but one slowly gets used to it.Within a couple of days there was a noticeable improvement in the condition and now after a couple of weeks the headaches have gone and mobility has improved about 50%. It may not work for everyone but, from my experience, it's worth a try.

Highly recommend Tim as a physio. I've spent most of my life with chiropractors with some success but mostly needing treatment again. In the last two yrs I had a reoccurring chronic headaches, painful pinching in my neck + shoulder and chronic pain in my hip. After seeing Tim a few times and incorporated some of the exercises he taught me I am now pain free and have been for 5 months. I'm very grateful to have found Tim. If you get the chance to see him in Sydney, don't hesitate!

I already have a predisposition to Cervicogenic headaches and Migraines and 2 days ago I fell carrying my 5 year old daughter, twisted to protect her from the fall, and my head bounced off the footboard of the bed. I already saw an emergency medicine doctor who diagnosed with me a concussion and wished me luck. Here I am 2 days later and my headache is getting substantially worse. So, I'm watching videos I wish were happening to me more than anything. This looks so lovely and relieving.

I get this pain almost every day.. it is the absolute worst. I swear I think a lot of people suffer from this pain from looking down on their phones all day. Between the posture and your constant focus on a little screen, it’s no wonder people suffer from both neck pain and migraines.

I have troubles with working at home. My floor dips in the middle so if I'm in a regular chair, not only is my spine hyperextended, but I'm looking down because I need higher desk risers. I also need to actually use the ergonomic chair they provided. I'm my own worst enemy sometimes.

I am a diagnosed chronic migrainer but I do think some of my headaches that I think are migraines are cervicogenic. I have scoliosis and it has put a lot of pressure on my C-spine. Traction helps.

I suffer from this very often, several times a day, it could be continuous if I wasn't vigilante about it. It can start first thing in the morning, especially weekends. This is as particlar postures in bed, especially while awake or after having moved slightly can cause it. It can also come from looking down and bending over for extended periods. I've found that if I don't get up and fix it quick enough in the mornings, it will stay with me the entire day no matter what I do. For the first 20 minutes you can get rid of it, but once it's in the eyes and cheeks it's too late. It is for me, linked to either c3 or c2 like you say, but maybe also a disk between my should blades, maybe not. I recognised a huge increase after damaging my upper traps, so I think it's more likely the top of the spine. I've found balancing my head on my kneck in such a way as to allow my kneck muscles to relax, and jostling my head slightly while pressing the disks in my kneck usually helps. Sometimes I'll use something like the collar on my shirt, unfold it and wrap it around my kneck and pull it closed to create even pressure, and while doing this i might lean my head left or right to crack a disk into place. Seconds after the headache is gone. If I catch it before it's too late that is. Also, collars are sometimes responsible for triggering the pain, for applying pressure to only a particlur region and not allowing full movement of your head. Also, sitting on the tail of my dressing gown can make it start to happen, as it stops you from being able to extend your back fully. It doesn't seem like it at first, but it definitely can be what triggers it. It almost always does for me. Not having the right sized pillow does it too. It's horrible.

@Royal Rajput @Royal Rajput It's difficult to say re the long term, I imagine it will get worse with time rather than better. I am more pushed towards thinking It's from a damaged shoulder which results in neck issues too. I used to sleep on my shoulder a lot. Now I sleep with my arm in the "C" of "YMCA" position, and also regularly releive pain by holding it in this position when awake too. I will raise my arm until there's a significant cruch/click, the feeling of fresh blood rushing through my veins will also indicate when I'm doing it right. But also, if you wear headphones, motorcycle helmets etc for long periods, this can also add to the issue I've found. Pulling on my ears in such a way as to relieve pressure from the neck-shoulder region has helped too.

I've suffered from these gor years, finally found a name for it... It's terrible! Only relief I've found so far is Sumatriptan, which is the only way I can get rid of the pain. I'm currently going to a chiropractor but it's slow progress.

I currently have a horribly painful case of shingles on the right side of the neck and jaw, wrapped around the back of the ear, including the ear, and into the scalp in these areas too. All this causing crushing, intense occipital neuralgia pain in the head above the ear that moves upward. It's like the shingles took the path of the c2-c4 areas and were referred to one whole side of my neck, some of my jaw, back of the head and scalp running up one side of head, plus a bit on the hump and trapezius at the back on the right. Almost like the cervical injury caused the shingles or at least enabled them? Obviously I can't get a chiropractic manipulation or massage while the shingles are in full agonizing bloom.

Thanks for explaining this, I started having the worst headaches in my life in the past 1.5 months and after some investigations turns out I have some osteophytes in my cervical discs , physiotherapy was recommended, I really hope it helps because I can feel my neck muscles and traps sore and everything aggravates if my neck gets stiffer.
