Treating Arthritis in Dogs - a plan to keep them pain free!

When it comes to successfully treating arthritis in dogs and cats, there's far more involved than simply giving them some supplements or chucking them some painkillers every now and then (and it doesn't have to be complicated or expensive!). The fact is that a few simple changes in your pet's lifestyle at home, along with some natural remedies, and pain relief medication can all combine to ensure that your arthritis dog is living as happy and comfortable a life as possible.

A successful dog arthritis treatment plan should involve:
- Weight management
- Nutrition
- Exercise management
- Environmental modification
- Supplements
- Complimentary therapies
- Pain killing medication
Once you have a treatment plan in place, it's then important to monitor your dog's comfort levels, modify the plan if needed, and then maintain it so that your dog's pain does not return

thank you for the tips, my dog lived on the streets in Portugal for years and 2 years ago we got her from a shelter, she wasn't in good shape when we got her but over the years it got worse and now she has arthritis. It's just so unfair and terrible to see a dog that hasn't had a good life go through so much pain, just when she found a home, we will be doing anything in our power to relieve her pain and make her life as careless and happy as possible. So again, thank you and please pray for my dog

Dr. Alex, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your channel and these videos! My precious companion is a 13-year-old German Shepherd who has dealt with arthritis well for the past 4 years. Just this past Wednesday he had a flare-up, and candidly, as I type I do not know whether we are at the end of our time together on this earth, but as I search for insights and information, you provide solid information with great, compassionate advice. I'm so grateful to have found you. Your patients and their human companions are very blessed indeed!

Thank you so much! My dog is 10 and beginning to show signs of arthritis and this is how I lost my last dog so I want to help him. I recon he has at least 3 years if he stays healthy even though his breeds lifespan is 10-12. Someone thought he was only 10 months today lol.

Great video. My Boxer suffered from painful joints as she aged. She had excellent results with Cosequin. She could barely stand from a seated position @ 8 years old. After starting Cosequin, she was much more active. I was very lucky to have had almost 12 years with her.

Great video, already do most of it. I got my dog a stool to help him jump into the car, though I usually just pick him up. You are right that every step adds up, but I also feel it’s a matter of pride for him to be able to jump in and out on his own.

Our 90 lbs American bulldog has had two tplo surgeries and another revision surgery due to infection of the implant. The surgeries did give him his mobility back but he’s starting to show more signs of OA at 7.5 years old. Sleeping more, moving slower and also limping a bit/toe touching on one leg (the one that was done three years ago) We give him cosequin (have been for about 5 years) and have also added green lipped mussel just recently. They do make a big difference. He’s not 100% but he appears to be doing better. And changing his exercise to 3 times a day short walks have also helped.

Thank you for the advice , we are gutted as our collie is only 7 and has just been diagnosed with arthritis caused by an injury leading to bursitis . He is on a monthly jab and we will see how it goes . Our long walking days in the lakes are over for now . Im very interested in the specific wait loss food you mentioned , would that be available over the counter ?

Hi. My 10 year old lab has been diagnosed with arthritis. He is still fairly active. However once the sun sets he doesnt want to move much and refuses to go for his night time walk. My vet has put him on a strict diet( he has to loose 8 kgs) and prescribed a joint supplement and cbd oil. Should I talk to my vet about painkillers now? Or should I give it sometime and see if his current treatment helps? Thanks a lot for this lovely video. Definitely learnt a lot from it.

Thanks for the this video my dog is 15 seems to have more problem in her right back leg would you consider galliprant as metacam doesn’t help . Also should we do stretches with her as she can only manage into the garden which she gets about 10mins every 2 hours
