TRC-3400 military manpack radio

This TRC-3400 is a manpack radio produced by Thomson, although it has been named after TRC-3600 and under the label of Thales as PRC-3700, with some other features that where added with every new version of the transceiver.
It is powered with 14.5V and it is able to put 20W in the air. It has an auto tuner but it is only usable with the Antenna connection, so you will have to use the adapter shown in the video to use any other type of antenna. You are advised to pick the right antenna on pressing the antenna key (Y) to let the radio perform at its best.
This radio is sturdy and very well constructed. It has the normal 6 pin Nato U-328/U connector but also two other 14 pin connectors U-316/U that can be used also with some ancillaries and data.
Thank you ‪@Radio_Militar‬ for the handset and connector!! 🫡

That's a beautiful radio. I've always liked military radios. I had the opportunity to borrow a friend's British Clansman PRC-320 and used it for Field Day many years ago. It was a monster compared to this one, though changing frequencies looks a little easier since each element of the frequency had its own dial.

@@Radiogenes It's very versatile, but it was so heavy. LOL. I used it in the back of my truck. The radio I regret selling was my Vertex VX-1210. It was long before I really understood about how tuners work, and how they're not magic, even if they can make a match with your antenna. Now, I think it would have been a good radio to have, but there are many 10-to-20 watt radios available.

That is crazy new radio! You got crypto onboard & hopping? We still operate TRC-9200 - I believe it's same family but in tactical VHF or at least reassemble it close. Does it support encrypted DV?

I have a trc 3400. I am actively using it in the field. I have the whole set. I do not have an adapter to use a different antenna. Is it connected to the BNC input, which is the dipole antenna input on the upper part, as grounding? I want to make this adapter. De TA3KAH,73

Yes, the bnc part has no center pin. However it is not a stright connection. There is an impedance transformer or something as there is no continuity. I have to say that it alao works with direct continuity also but you have to use a unun or something to make it easier for the tuner

I mean, the bnc on the cable, has no center pin, its mission is to provide ground.

@@Radiogenes I understand now, thank you very much. I am using the grounding part of the device. I am using whip antenna for 20 meters freq. For 40 meters, I choose the bnc antenna input and use the dipole antenna option. whip antenna only works for 20 meters and I choose vertical antenna.. 73🙏

@@ta3kah yeah. Once you make the adapter use 2.4m whip option and you’re done I made something for the TRC-300 Thomson TRC300-2 back in the air kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZauWu9x6XbjXkso.html min 4:06
