Travels by Narrowboat - "In The Aim of Progress" - S09E03

Aslan & I now leave our mooring at the top of Woodend Lock and drop down the locks to Fradley Junction.
Then turning onto the Coventry Canal, I moor up and take a stroll around the junction, as well as enjoy a coffee and later, a delicious pint of Guinness in the Swan pub (or Mucky Duck).
Along the way, it would be remiss of me not to indulge in a short rant regarding the high-speed rail link (HS2), now cutting a swathe through England's ever-shrinking greenbelt.

When HS2 began devastating the woodland some protesters camped up in the trees. HS2 employed a security company and they stopped friends getting in there from the road, to give them food and drink. So what did they do? They brought a narrowboat along the canal and got the food to them that way. Brilliant and fair play to them.

Well not exactly brilliant! This nonsense, and it’s delays, are part of the cause of the soaring costs. The security companies should receive NO payment because they did not meet their targets and goals, by not having enough brains to foresee that. If some Dooley with a barge can think of it, surely some company with a map can think of it and whack a big barbed wire electric fence up before it happens. I know change is difficult for some people, but the fact is if we don’t do this, our infrastructure will be strangled for future generations.

My wife & I are on your video at 7m 50s standing outside the Swan Pub 🙂. That lake was once used to top up the canal’s water but is now solely a nature reserve. The main road you passed under and then alongside, is the busy A38 trunk road and named Rykneld St because it’s an old Roman Rd and that was its name.

The cottage at Wood End Lock was a rented property and the lady who lived there also looked after the moorings and landscaped the land around the lock with flowers and plants. She was a cabinet maker/carpenter and ran her business from an outbuilding behind the cottage. She’d been there for years and was devastated when she had to move out. The cottage will be re-let or sold once the HS2 work finishes.

It's criminal what is happening to the countryside in the name of progress. A couple of years ago Ikea decided they would build a store at the top end of our village in Lancashire. Hundreds to trees were cut down to make way for it. Then Ikea decided to pull out of the deal. Kevin, the day I watched this video it was raining here so I felt like I was traveling with you on the canal. Loved the candy shop and the Mucky Duck, great looking inn. Thanks for sharing the details, your friend Charlie from Pennsylvania 😂

Hi Kevin, I loved the sweetie boat. It was a pity about the man with the cough, but you were probably wise to avoid any germs flying about! Aslan is sounding in fine fettle. As you are too. The HS2 seems to be a colossal waste of money and has also ruined some wonderful landscape and woodland. Sigh. 😒

If less than one percent of the projected cost for HS2 was reallocated to canal restoration that would be a billion quid made available. Imagine what we could get for that the newly restored and interconnected Wilts and Berks and Cotswold canals adding more than a hundred miles to the network in a oner. You would be able to take a narrowboat from Kendal in the Lake District right down a restored Wey and Arun canal to within sight/spitting distance of the English Channel without once having to take a boat out of the water. The canals managed properly can be fantastic for wildlife and narrow boating by nature has a low ecological footprint and environmental impact - their industrial origins mean they actually run through many lower income areas and so potentially bring benefits to people with fewer opportunities than others especially the kids living there. All that wonderful industrial heritage in them to be preserved and admired too. But no we've got a shiny new corporately vacuous vanity project instead.

I suppose there would have been compulsory purchase orders when they built the first railways and canals. Imagine the number of people relocated for the railways in London alone.

Knowing my experience, CPO's often are more likely abused by the councils in order to get property for their own selfish reasons whilst screwing those that are are forced to sell threw force because the legal system benefits those that are implementing the CPO's sadly. I would be as happy as a pig inna certain brown stuff if I saw that sweet shop boat.
