Travels by Narrowboat - "A Canal Less Travelled" - S10E01
Welcome to the first episode of Season 10 of Travels by Narrowboat. This time round, Aslan and I will be exploring canals both old and new to the series, as we first travel the remaining 7 miles from Marston Junction on the Coventry Canal, to the terminus at Coventry Basin, in Coventry.
Then through Season 10, we revisit the northern section of the Oxford Canal from Hawkesbury Junction to Braunston, and then journey along the south Oxford Canal for the first time, to the city of Oxford itself.

It’s so odd watching you go past my house, my old school, the pub I drink in and the canal I’ve walked countless times with my dog. One of my mates lives in one of the blocks of flats you went past, my dad used to work at one of the factories you went past. So glad to see you back.
I’m so glad to see your new season begin Mr. Gent. Thanks for sharing your travels with us.

Pink Rosebay Willowherb, and the purple Buddleia are all along that stretch of canal. Just beautiful, except for the whole “invasive” aspect of the buddleia. I read that both of those plants, along with another pink one I can’t remember the name of were the first flowering plants to grow in the bomb sites in and around London. Butterflies just love the purple buddleia flowers too. It seems to thrive on “waste” ground and alongside railway lines. Nature is such a great decorator ❤
Great to see you back Kevin! This was a perfect end to a busy week 😊
I found your videos during a very depressing time of my life. I found solace in watching these and it got me thru this terrible time. I am still here and getting along. Thank you! Keep going strong. You are helping a lot of us. Hope to meet you someday and say thank you.
If you hadn't said, I would have sworn that poem was the work of Percy Bysshe Shelley. Lovely to have you back on the canals for our viewing pleasure Sir.
on the road again nice 1 bud thanks keep on trucking
YAY Kevin and Aslan are back!!!!!
Nice one, Kev! You've MFGA (Made Fridays Great Again)!
Yes, yes, yes ... no looking at ya dinner, and we go oooooh boating all over the world. Well a short stretch of the Coventry anyway, but thats just the Status Quo. 👍🤘🤘🤘😉
"A canal less traveled," and that has made all the difference. Truer words were never spoken. ;-)

Hi Kevin hooray great to see you and ASLAN back on your travels and sharing them with us, been waiting for this since season 9 ended
Hi Kevin 👋 just us 2saying hi 👋 thanks for this update 👋 keep safe say well and enjoy your lifestyle 👋 den and sue 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🚌🚌🚌
My favorite narrowboater is back! And with my favorite show theme! Gotta say, tho, that graveyard was creeeepy. Cheers Kevin!
Many elements have kept me watching since the beginning , including your sense of humor. "If there weren't fish they'd be enjoying a rather boring hobby" killed me! Cheers
Enjoying the start to season ten Kevin. We passed Aslan snoozing peacefully, but apparently unoccupied near Hawkesbury Junction a few weeks ago. One of these days we'll get an opportunity for a catch-up. We really enjoyed our stay in Coventry Basin, hope you do too. It's always worth ignoring the naysayers and finding out for yourself. Looking forward to your Oxford adventures. Take care. Tony & Gill, Golden Girl (Fettlers Wharf).

Ah hello Tony and crew. Yes I was probably out in search of a supermarket and a decent latte. Agreed, Coventry Basin was an unexpected surprise. I'll keep an eye out for Golden Girl.
Congratulations on Season 10! I love your opening song, which I know you wrote. And I love that you showed us exactly how you start Aslan up, gave us the Google Maps view, and your plan for the journey. I think you've got a good eye for scenery and color, and your sense of humor keeps me coming back. Looking forward to the season!
I love the smell of diesel in the morning
nice to see you back on the water and MOST important, nice to see you keep wearing them T-Shirts!
I had a friend who lived in the flats near to Red Lane New Bridge 5A, and just up from Stoke Heath Basin. Last time I was staying there some years ago, the Canal froze over enough to skate on.
Love the rural bits. Interested in the abandoned bit of the Oxford, will see if it's on old maps. It made sense to go to Coventry. M6 - previous life - disappearing in the mists of time... The graffiti is depressing. The amount of stuff people store on top of their boats you'd have thought that they would have designed in lockers or summat.
Oh, what a delight! CHG on a Friday, yeah! 🎉🎉
Kevin, we're a couple from the state of Nebraska who discovered your series during the initial pandemic shutdown in the Spring of 2020. We've been avid fans since. We like to think we're getting an inside look of England. We've yet to make it to your country, but it's definitely on our bucket list. Keep up the good work! Paul & Linda Rasmussen

Thank you so much for that, it's very much appreciated. Rewarding to hear the videos and series brought some comfort and enjoyment during a very difficult time and I can heartedly recommended a visit to old Blighty, and especially the canal network. 🙂
My intimate knowledge of Coventry is that my ‘71 Triumph Bonneville motorcycle was made there. I regret selling that bike. I miss it.
Good to see season 10 underway, happy boating we look forward to your travels! (Feel free to throw in some cooking videos, always fun to watch).
Great to see you again 😊 I love the canal poem. It reminded me of the pointy birds poem that Steve Martin told in one of his films 😅 pointy birds a pointy pointy, annoint my head , a nointy nointy 😂
Greetings from Florida's Nature Coast! Always a good thing when a new season of Travels by Narrowboat premieres! But, there's a dark cloud on the horizon... I notice you're not wearing the blue shirt with sleeves rolled up to your elbows.😂 On to the Oxford Canal!
Nicely done, especially the opener. Taking us through your startup routine set up my anticipation for what lays ahead in season 10!
Nice to see you and to hear Aslan tc now the oldies 👍🤗
Luv the CHG T shirts.! ringspun cotton.!awesome.
Stoke Heath Basin (Swan Lane) - seems an unlikely spot now, but back in the seventies this was home to Clubline Cruisers, a substantial fleet of hire boats, each named after a different playing card. The business has long since passed into history, but this was the origin of my narrowboating experiences. 🙂
Hello Kevin, Fellow Gen Xer here from Nashville. A great first S10 episode! I sincerely thank you for providing such extremely rich content to all of us over the past six years! From sharing your experiences, humility, & personal growth while traveling down the most characterful canals in the world to offering advice on navigating life’s ups & downs with courage, dignity, & humor to proving how fulfilling & satisfying one can live by simplifying things, slowing down, & focusing on what’s really important around you. I mean, to those of us who think & feel…yes, Rush reference :)…your videos are soul food that hits on all cylinders & provides balance to allow one to have pleasant & inspiring thoughts. Of course, Aslan is cool, too :)! Have a great Season 10 journey & take care! Hats off to Country House Gent! Cheers!

Many thanks Mark, it's very heart warming to hear that the series is appreciated for what I hoped it would become - the life, personal growth, experiences and opinions of someone who became world-weary and decided to do their utmost to make a difference, as much as is possible. At the time I thought that 'difference' would be only to my life, not as transpired, to countless people around the world. Cheers, 🙂

It never fails to amaze me how old people like the same music I grew up with (love your t-shirts!)...... hey, wait a minute... 🤔 You know you're old when you hear your favorite songs playing in an elevator or over the PA system of your grocery store. 🤣
I'm on a lake on the other side of the Pond, and I enjoyed your series. I had no idea Britain had so much navigable waterways.

Oh cov. 🤣..i lived there for a year... a year il never get back lol👍safe journeys🙏
The bridge that you passed under with the swan family painted on it was so pretty. I’m glad to see that it was still pristine and didn’t have graffiti painted on top of it.
Greetings from southern Indiana. I have been enjoying your videos since season one when I stumbled across them on Amazon Prime. I always look forward to them.
Those duplex houses that look like 1/2 of 2 different houses glued together are so weird, with one half brick and the other half plaster right down the center. If there weren't fish in the canal I bet they wouldn't have that fishing competition every year that we saw in previous seasons with fishermen as far as the eye can see.
@CountryHouseGent
10 ай бұрын
Ha yes, the 4 miles of fishermen. That was a day to remember. Took 4 hours and couldn't even stop to make a cuppa. 😆
I love the looks you get from some of the locals, it's as if they're saying, "You ain't from round 'ere are yer!!"
First thing I hear, horses whinnying, never saw them:( Then, your voice, starting Season 10, yay, lovely to have you and Aslan back in our lives, here in Juneau, Alaska! Your weather often mimics ours and love it when we get summer, again, in between the bouts of cloudy, rainy stretches! Looking forward to your dry sense of humor, your cooking, your videos full of interesting history of the canals. Virtual travel is so entertaining, thanks to you and Aslan! Good luck and good health for this next season, we’ll be watching!❤

Happy days on the canal Cbr929 guy seattle
Kevin I believe I sense an onward and upward surge going forward. Good on ya. Oh canal- Oh canal. 😊
Yes, certainly a canal less travelled, not to mention a canal with less maintenance! The abundance of trash in the canal and the string of abandoned narrow boats can’t make for a very enjoyable journey 😮
Oh, that was great. Thank you, man. Pleasant, visual, and informative. I like hearing little stories and such about where you are. All good.

Ah Kevin and Aslan I love these videos. Keep on man!
Fascinating watching familiar local stuff through the CHG lens. We've only explored these parts since starting to watch your channel just over a year ago. I hope my forensic interest in your journey has not spooked you. I do cycle rides most afternoons anyway, but there were a few strategic routes, sightings of Aslan moored up and a couple of encounters with the skipper (second of which spooked me) before finally getting to witness you and her gently chugging along last Sunday - that was the aim - wow, made my week! Thanks for opening up a whole new world to us; places like Braunston - heavenly. Total respect for your solitary and self-sufficient life and you skill in sharing it with us lucky viewers. 😍
Hi Kevin ,so nice to have you back looking forward to future episodes 👍
I learned something new today, Ice Cream trucks play the same music in the UK and the US.
Good morning Kevin, what a state that canal was in! Numerous shopping trollies and one black bag of household waste. That was only in the water. Above it there were over hanging branches and towpath looked uncared for. Seems to me there are some very untidy, lazy people living around there. You were wise not to moor up in that area.
Love hearing Aslan ticking up and see y'all heading out. Safe travels and vaya con Dios good luck with the new season 10. 😊
How lovely. not surprised by all the shopping carts in the canal, they sell them at Aldi for only a pound! LOL. Great to have you back

My wife and I are bed-ridden due to a summer cold/flu. Your show on Amazon has been providing perfectly relaxing binge-watching material. Very well done. Also, I get the hint that God is trying to get your attention. Nothing bad, but from a place of grace and love.

Hi, great to see you back. and on my local canal, Marston junction is a short walk for us. Although the last time we walked to Sutton Stop out with the cameras there was still ice in places. The Greyhound is one of the best pubs in the area. Look forward to the next bit of the journey.
I’ve been looking forward to this for an age! Finally making your way down south to where I live….for ref I live not far from the Basingstoke Canal
Your poem was awesome! Reminding me of Victor's: "Sconio o Sconio, how I wish that you were mine, lying on a tea plate, covered in Margarine.. " 😁
So happy you’re Back! I will watch again because there were friendly interruptions. It is Friday night where I live, 🤣
Aslan, Kevin and TBN Season 10 … life is complete once again 😊 great to see you back. Best wishes Helen Jane

Hello Kev! Absolutely NOT being critical. Simply educational. The correct way to neutralize, ummm, bad vocalizations here in the colonies is to say, "Knock on wood" while delivering a vicious and audible knuckle rap to the nearest wood or wood product. I tell you this in the true spirit of Glasnost. Or glasstnalk...whichever. Granted, one system may not work in the other country. More research needs to be done on the matter. In the meantime I would never take the chance on 'touch wood' as there is the possibility the wood may think I'm just kidding. Your best fan in Alabam, Norm
Nice to see…. Thanks for sharing!
Glad to see you again good sr
