I'm assuming that it's an alarm that you have to shut off so that way you stay awake. But, I have no idea. I'm just guessing.

Like ever 30 minutes an alarm goes off and if you don't turn it off idk the boat stops or something. That's my best guess. I'm sure someone can confirm or deny.

It's an alarm device that must be switch off before the set amount of time expires and resets straight after. If not disabled in time depending on how the vessel has been set-up a series of alarms will be triggered alerting the watchmen and then the crew. The alarm can easily heard over everything, similar to bilge alarms etc.

I'd always wanna go first or 2nd that way you get a full sleep not being woken up at half way through the night we used to do 3 and a half hours each 4 crew one skipper we have alarms so you gotta press it every 15 minutes otherwise an alarm will wake everyone up so no sleeping during you're watch I fished in the Kimberley lots of island full of nothing so gotta be on the ball I miss it
