The thing is that China is not entirely communist, China has its own unique system, mixing a bit of everything, that's why it's so good, it's gets the best of every system.

Early immigrant from China spoke Cantonese because those were people mainly from Canton province and H.K. going back a Century. Mandarin slowly became more used in concert with China's rise economically world wide.

Here in Malaysia, Malaysia Chinese community who lives in rural area may still speak chinese dialect but those who are brought up in city areas are increasingly speaking mandarin instead of chinese dialect especially younger generation under 20 years old.

Thank you to Rafa for his video. I am an old man of Chinese descent living in the UK most of my life. Typical early emigrants from Hong Kong to the US, UK, then Canada and Australia and elsewhere mostly if not all spoke Cantonese. Cantonese was spoken as a main local language in Guang Dong Province (including Hong Kong) and in part of the neighbouring Guang Xi Province. As domestic migration from other parts of China to Guang Dong Province, Manadrin has become progressively the main spoken language. Back in the 1970's virtually all the Chinese people in Britain spoke Cantonese. Now I hear many Mandarin speaking Chinese in London. It demonstrates just how far and wide Mainland Chinese people have spread all over the world.

China mainland advances a lot. I visited China recently. The new highspeed station from chingqing to chengdu in sichuan province is like a spacecraft. Thais are learning mandarin as a third language after English. Chinese companies from china have recently opened their branches in my country creating mandarin speaking labor demand.

Yes, Many Fijian people moved to UK 10,20 years ago. So, mandarin is became popular. My uncle also lived in Manchester but moved back to Hong Kong around 2000. After back to HK, he decided moved back his home town on 2003, I think this is Chinese 落葉歸根。UK is a bore country, my younger sister living in Liverpool since she 18, I have been there twice and have a chance to move to UK but I gave up because boring.

Rafael, I would love to see an entire video on Guangzhou. The city is absolutely amazing in its development and constant reconstruction just like the rest of China. I wish that it would build more traditional style ancient shopping areas as Cantonese architecture is so unique and beautiful. Lastly, I was born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada. I speak Cantonese fluently which is surprising to most people as I was one year old when I moved to Canada. Now more and more Chinese Canadians speak Mandarin due to the immigration pattern. Mandarin is becoming an important language globally due to the rise of China. It is such a beautiful sounding language as well and I hope to speak it better in the future. I have sent my kids to Mandarin school and attended some lessons myself. Cantonese people complain that they are losing their language but really Mandarin is a far superior language on which written Chinese is based. China does more than any other country in promoting local languages but Mandarin needs to be taught nationwide to put all citizens on an equal footing for higher education and jobs in the future.

I went to elementary school and middle school in Guangzhou, and we always use mandarin, it is the language that is taught in school. Cantonese kids may talk to other Cantonese kids in Cantonese in private but normally we speak Mandrain.

Thanks for your video. I went to old neighbourhoods just like Enning Lu but not as refurbished yet in Fall of 2019. Some neighbourhood were known as place to shop for clothing, others for jewelry etc. I went with my mom who grew up nearby in Kaipeng (Hoiping in Cantonese) to her childhood village. Her first time back since leaving 50+ years ago. I shoot of a video of it on my channel & other videos of Guangzhou. She spoke a rural dialect but then learned proper Cantonese, as most people her age back then. Now, Mandarin is the language of instruction; only the older people only know Cantonese.

Public schools require to teach in Mandarin, but when I was in school in the 90’ and 2000s’ I don’t think it’s well enforced everywhere. Some older teachers were just not that good in Mandarin. It’s not rare some teachers just taught in Cantonese and more often communicates in Cantonese after class. Nowadays teachers are more capable of mandarin, more teachers are hired from other places, and more immigrant families have settled in so I think it’s a trend that mandarin in schools is more common now

The Line 1 train you took was the original 1997 EMUs imported from Germany. The ADtranz trains, along with the 2002 Bombardier trains (still in use on Line 2 and 8), were the only ones in Guangzhou without LED screens. They were made by ADtranz. The story was that Guangzhou originally awarded the contract (joint venture) to Alstom of France, but after France sold weapons to Taiwan, the Chinese side rescinded their offer and invited the Germans instead. That was what I heard. Also, I see a lot of green-plated electric vehicles (Tesla included) from your video. The last time I was in Guangzhou (April 2018), there weren't that many of them.

Most Chineses abroad were from either Fujian or Canton provinces to escape from war, hunger, persecution and seek better life because they lived so close to the shoreline, sometimes a whole village just moved to countries all over the world and build up small villages like Hong Kong, Taiwan then. The downside is like 90% of Chinese Americans were labors before and illegal immigrants claimed to get political asylum to for green cards first and moved their families to join later, less than 10% are skilled workers or investors to immigrate, because most them were from countrysides and less educated in 1st generation immigration and they had the lowest pay jobs and speak no local language so they were looked down upon every where. But their business acumen, hard working spirit brought them fortunes every where like in South-East Asia Chinese control majority of domestic business in generations but becoming the scapegoat should any new right wing politicians to get power, turmoil, persecution and sometime massacre followed like in Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia etc.

You’ll hear more Mandarin spoken in the big cities nowadays in southern China due to influx of people from elsewhere. Consequently, Shanghainese language is dying. There’s this “political correctness” to make Shanghai more welcome to newcomers and not letting them feel discriminated, kids in Shanghai are only allowed to speak mandarin in school and in public. So most kids can’t speak the local dialect well anymore.
