My HONEST Thoughts on CHINA (It's Not What You Think) 🇨🇳 中文字幕

Guys, I've spent a few days in Shanghai and since not many foreigners come here, I thought I'd sum up some of my thoughts of what I think of China so far. This is just my perspective as a Canadian tourist visiting in 2024. Let me know what you think about what I said, or if you've also been to China, drop your thoughts below.

Haha, as a Chinese Shenzhen native, I feel the need to answer questions about cameras. China is one of the safest countries in the world, thanks to decades of public security management and the improvement of people's quality. The cameras that can be seen everywhere are not used to monitor everyone. You can think of it as a time-lapse photography and evidence collection tool. For example, there are cameras everywhere on the road. When a car accident occurs, the traffic police can make a preliminary determination based on the dashcams of both parties, and then call up the roadside cameras to check the specific circumstances when the car accident occurred. Secondly, when someone's wallet/valuables are stolen or lost, the police can use the cameras to determine the movements of criminals and suspects, and then arrest them, and then return the victim's property or lost items. Simply put, if you have not committed a crime, attacked or hurt others, you can ignore these cameras, including the police and security personnel on the roadside, and then live your life as you please and do what you like.

  • @PopdjksFoijsk

Addition: 1. Cameras are concentrated in places with large traffic flow 2. Cameras on the road are used to monitor road conditions 3. Cameras in residential areas protect the owners of the community and prevent strangers from entering the community 4. Cameras in stores protect goods from being stolen 5. I have lived in Shenzhen, Sheffield and Singapore, so I understand your concerns, but believe me, this is definitely for protection, protection that has more benefits than disadvantages, so please relax and enjoy your beautiful life

The following article is written by Ismail Bashmori, he is an Egyptian China watcher. The truth is that China is the greatest country on the face of the earth. It makes all other countries look insignificant and contemptible. It is the most brilliant, most industrious, most ambitious, most educated, meritocratic and technocratic, most modern, sophisticated, and civilised, and best-governed by far. It is the first non-white, non-Western country to reach this status since the 1600s. The determination of this country is indescribable. Supernatural. There is no force that can stop it from accomplishing anything it wants to do. 。 It doesn’t matter who we are. Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Indians, Africans, even Americans. Next to the Chinese, we are pathetic. We can’t do what they do. We would have a mountain, an Everest of changes to make, and we would whine and bicker and fail at every one of them. China’s story since the 1980s has been one of an almost divine metamorphosis. 。 Next to China the entire Western world from Alaska to New Zealand has stagnated. Next to China the entire developing world from Brazil to Madagascar has progressed only at a crawl. China is the mother of all gargantuan bullet trains. Every day it manages to create something new and astonishing. And unlike the United States, unlike the British Empire, unlike the French, Dutch, Germans, Spanish, Portuguese or any other Western nation that had its turn at being a superpower in the past four centuries, China doesn’t need to run anybody over or take something from somebody else, to rise majestically. China is also standing up to the West all by herself. The West can’t believe their four-hundred-year-old global supremacy is being challenged. They hoped that the more China developed, the more it would submit to their influence, interests, and leadership. That didn’t happen. So now they will do anything possible, short of a nuclear war, to make China end. Their goal is to destroy this country. That’s why, although the United States has killed several million people and turned several regions of the earth into hellscapes. China is the worst fear of our planet’s Western masters. They want you to despise and dread a country that’s done nothing to you, that hasn’t invaded anyone, bombed or sanctioned anyone, that hasn’t overthrown any foreign government, or used its military on anything since 1979. China is the only major country in the nonwhite developing world, to stand up to the West. To look it in the eye when challenged or threatened. The Global South are simply Western puppets who submitted long ago. Even the most powerful ones. Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India. Above only part of the article, you can read the full article under the following link. www.dailyexpress.com.my/read/4459/west-can-t-believe-nor-accept-china-s-progress/?fbclid=IwAR3aJYSZC3rbUgM1NwHCO73XxnNzNkJPa9wrSsFp-4KMxTozuJiHBwLJDXU

You are very objective, and I would like to add that based on my understanding of surveillance cameras, most recordings will be deleted in about a week. If you don't do this, it's hard to imagine how many hard drives are needed to store so much video data. If you lose something, within a week, the police can rely on checking the recordings captured by surveillance cameras to find who passed by that location and took away the lost item. To be honest, all Chinese people don't care about surveillance cameras in public places, and safety is of course the top priority. Another reason is that everyone believes that privacy is not necessary in public places, but if you shoot videos in private places, they will feel offended. Another thing that many people overlook is that the Chinese people have a very high level of trust in the government. If a natural disaster occurs in a certain area, soldiers will sacrifice their lives to save the people. A society with almost no drugs relies on the police sacrificing their lives to fight against drug traffickers. The government's support and assistance to the poor are all remembered by the Chinese people, so they have 100% trust in the government, police, and military.

In theory, this is true. However, in practice, it becomes an area ripe for abuse. For example, imagine speaking out against something negative that the government has done. Now you're basically a target 24/7 wherever you walk. Your social credit score can be demoted at the whim of whoever is in charge. Your whole life could be ruined within a week. As a foreigner, we don't think about these things too often. However, if you're living there and this happens to you, your life will suddenly become a nightmare.

We've been to Shanghai, China last December. Yeah... China is so advanced. China is safe with or without cameras. It's probably due in a large part to the culture in China and other East Asian territories which places the community good above self. Cameras are required for high tech and surveillance is part of that, and why not? And cameras are essential for observation, not just for the individual safety from such thing as theft, violence, accidents, etc. but also for the community, for example, to prevent such things as an unforeseen accident, such as a stampede considering that the number of people in any one spot could just surge and create a stampede or something. However, with cameras, you can be assured that you are like 100% safe that even an occasional drunkard can't get away with any crimes, petty or otherwise. And, why not? All the negative and false narratives in regard to cameras, etc., for example, are due to hypocrisy, jealousy, etc., and well, just blatant racism (but for racism, at least, the racists should not be inferior). London, Britain has the highest number of CCTVs per capita, and yet the darn place is rife with crimes, the homeless, etc. And, OMG, the Brits, the pariah politicians, journalists, etc. want to lecture other people on freedom, safety, ethics, human rights, blah blah blah... they should take care of themselves first. Welcome to the future! This is true and real freedom. OMG! Yes, I agree with you that it would take at least 20 years for any Western city to develop to what Shanghai is today and by which time, Shanghai would have developed even further but the Western politicians and their pariah media keep peddling fake news and disinformation, misinformation and false narratives of China. Enjoy!

Actually , China is not like this all the time. In the 1990s, travelling around China could be dangerous, and pickpocket was common. The government paid a great effort in public security. But I believe the fundamental reason is the development of economy. No one would like to be a thief if he gets a decent job and well-paid.

Aspects I like about China, is that they keep their country way cleaner than the US and the West. They take way better care of their poor and lower income people and it seems there is a incentive to bring the lower income classes into upward mobility. Things I believe the US could learn from China.. The ALT Right and ALT left have ruined the United States..

I have nothing against China, but you gotta admit that China is still a lil bit backward in term of civility, don't get wrong, China is the safest country in the world, it's not crime or even petty crime, but small things like queuing, people spitting, do not flush toilet, loud (talk and playing music in phone -- I know these are people from small villages, but in general, you can feel it. Younger generation should take part in changing these behavior, because China get bad reputation because of this. Simply put, the economic run faster than people development.

For example, a lot of people pointed out that China has too many cameras. But actually UK has the most cameras per capita. And US has the second largest number of cameras, but people are fine about it. Is China a police country? No. Is there social credit system in China? No.

There were also American settlement and settlements of Germans, Austro-Hungarians, Belgians, Italians, Danes, Dutch, Swede, Norwegians, Spaniards and Portuguese. Eventually all merged into a single settlement called Shanghai International Settlement with own city council & government in 1854. France had its own settlement in the western part of the city called French Concession. There used to have Shanghai Racecourse (now People's Square & People's Park) and tram line along Nanjing Road under British rule.

Regarding the camera issue, it is nonsense to say that it violates privacy. China has a large population and does not have enough manpower to monitor everyone. Cameras are used to collect evidence and prevent crimes. The more people and cars flow, the more cameras there are.

Also suggest you to take the high speed train within one hour distance to visit another city for day trip. Just for experience. Like Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Nanjing for example.

Just spent a week in China, first time since 2019, was good to go back. Planning a longer trip for next year. Had a fantastic dinner at the Peace Hotel and was able to see the art deco interior, spectacular.

@@KSquaredVlogs Trust me, Chongqing is over-hyped. Chengdu is much better and has more to offer. PS: I am a Shanghai local. If you come to Shanghai next time, there are some other similar places like Xintiandi, such as 思南公馆 and 张园. Also, instead of the traditional route of visiting the Bund, I recommend you to walk around 苏州河,乍浦路桥, 外滩源 which is more morden and less touristy. Also, there is a Chinese style garden which I highly recommend, it's called 申园. very elegent and beautiful, way better than the famous Yu Garden. Lastly, there are several old water towns around Shanghai. The best maintained one is 乌镇. Make sure to stay inside the town and you will experience the best of the traditional southern Chinese culture. You won't regret it.

I'm an American. In 2009, I was in the same "newbie" position you are in now. In fact, it was in Shanghai. I was surprised by how modern and well-stocked the convenience stores/dept. stores were. I have been going back and forth between China and the U.S. for the last 15 years. The novelty wears off, but on-balance, I like spending time in China. Like anywhere else, there are some scammers in the big cities. For example in Shanghai on Nanjing Pedestrian Road where you are, the tourist guidebooks warned of "students" who would do a "tea house scam" and you'd end up paying several hundred dollars on threat of intimidation. Many places in China are very dirty and have trash. And there is often "cutting in line" when standing in lines. That used to make my blood boil, but I learned to just take it as it comes. There is no perfect place. We're all humans, after all. The large cities have low violent crime rates compared to the U.S. The subway systems in large cities is excellent. The high speed train system is excellent. Good luck on your travels in China.

Honestly, I also thought America was a dream place ten years ago. But I don't think so for now. One reason is that our country has developed a lot in the past ten years, and now we have a lot of convenient infrastructure, clean cities, and calm people. And you know my want car is to buy an Audi car even five years ago, but now, all the brands on my wishlist are Chinese. I chose Mazda five years ago but won't do it anymore. Of course, I think my country also has a lot of problems, for example, the housing price, which lets you work hard to pay the debt, sometimes making me feel unsafe. But when I talked to my mother and father, they told me a worse world in the past. They didn't have so many things, and they worked hard for the new but poor country, but they are happy, they have dreams, now what I live is what they used to want to have. So, how do I have to complain about today? The only thing I can do is work to support my family, just like what my mother and father did; if everyone focuses on the true things, they will let their country be better and better. Of course, some Chinese people also dropped in the DEI trap. They are talking about some strange and weird things when they say they need fair, I‘d like just tell them: No one is being unfair to you. You are just making fun of yourself

At the end of Nanjing walking mall street crossing over the Bund the LED traffic light sign "遵守 交通 信号" means "Obey traffic signals". I fully agree with your statement on "if you have nothing to hide what are you afraid of the security camera ?" which are there to deter and serve the purpose with crime or incident investigation. There are always crowds in front of the Peace hotel taking pictures were because it was the site where famous Hong Kong movie actor Chow Yun-Fat filmed the famous movie "和平饭店 Peace Hotel" in 1995.
