Travel in Galicia, Spain: Water, Words, and Weather
Winter in Galicia means wildly changeable weather, but the galegos are experts at dealing with whatever the weather brings. In this video we take a look at winter in Galicia and how maybe it's just the perfect metaphor for life.

Just discovered your beautiful and literate videos of Galicia and it brought memories of my 5 year sojourn in Spain (1973-78). The son of a native born Galego father and a mother born in USA --her father was born in Pontevedra, and her mother born in New Orleans of a Catalan mother and Asturian father most of whom immigrated to the States in early to mid 1800's mostly to the South (Louisana, Mississippi and Florida). My grandmother and my grandfather married in Louisiana , moved to Florida where my mother was born and mother married the Galego who came to work in the Cigar Factories of west central Florida. I am 77 years old and my first Spain adventure was in 1970 with a month spent in an aldea west of Santiago de Compostela where my dad was born. After college and grad school I obtained a Lecturers' position at the Univ of Madrid Complutense campus ansd spent much free time driving to Galicia and travelling most everywhere in Galicia and Asturias. I have been back several times visiting cousins and extended family but it is always a hurried experience spent mostly in Santiago or Coruna. Your videos bring back fond memories of the rural north Spain during those horrible Franco years.

Thank you for the interesting comment and history, Ken. I hope you can return again and have a less hurried experience. Life seems to slow down here. We have felt the stress we accumulated over many years fading into the background the longer we are here and present in this beauty.
We who are from here or have lived here for so long, many times take for granted all these things. It is so refreshing to see through new eyes discovering what it is living in Galicia! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!

I am a normal Galician, after traveling through Spain and traveling a little around the world, I have learned to love my land, Galicia. It is incredible for me to see how you love this land and enjoy the rain, that rain that no one wants and that the rest of Spain fears since it usually means sadness. For me, the rain is the memory of days making bread in the family oven, a large wood-burning oven, enjoying fresh, hot bread on cold, rainy days with my grandfather. Every time I watch your videos it makes me think why you have fallen in love with this inhospitable land. You are amazing.

What an exquisitely crafted film! I have just discovered your channel Jane, and had the pleasure of watching this and ‘Bread and Wine’ with my Galician daughter in law who was visiting us in here in the UK last week. Her father is a wine producer on land that has been in the family over 5 generations and she grown up with a profound love for the language, music and literature of her country. So, judging by her response to your films, I know Galicians will adore you for this. Oh, and Jones’s photography is sublime! (I checked out his instagram account). Can’t wait to visit Galicia again at the end of this month!

Wonderful video-poetry. I am amazed how many words for rain people use. As here, in Canada, in the north, the Inuit people (I was told) have similar number of words for snow, which, as rain, comes with multiple personalities. I love your work.

What a gem of a video! I so appreciate your refreshing and creative interpretation of this mystical land, language and people. Through your combined talents, the two of you are able to capture a depth of essence of the human experience that far exceeds anything I have seen in travel videos. Judging by the comments, you have profoundly moved many viewers, locals and foreigners alike-a true charism! Myself enchanted by walking the Camino de Santiago in 2004, I set my dream on returning permanently “sometime in the future”. As time passed, I narrowed it down to Galicia. In 2019, my husband and I began looking at rural properties with the intention of returning in 2020. Now with the pandemic situation somewhat normalizing, the search resumes and the plan is to return in the summer of 2023. Thanks you so much for giving us a glimpse of your new surroundings through these inspiring videos!

Nunca choveu que non escampara means that as bad as it may seem whatever it is that life throws at you, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. Literally yes, it never rained that it didn’t stop. Figuratively or used with Galician “retranca” it means as bad as it may seem, it’ll all pass and eventually it’ll all be well.

Isn't it so lovely? We don't mind the rain. As long as it doesn't snow, we are happy.
Very poetic. Perhaps too poetic and artistic for the average KZread viewer but nevertheless, an excellent picture of winter in the west of Galicia. The final scene was precious. I was wondering if you were going to try to learn Galego or just stick with Castillian. I studied Spanish for six years and lived in Mexico but Galego is too confusing for me. I can understand the written and spoken forms but to actually produce it would be really challenging. Perhaps for someone who is in their teens or early twenties it might be possible but as you get older learning a new foreign language can be quite an endeavour. Galego is supposedly close to Portuguese but the intonation is completely different, much closer to Castillian Spanish. For example, the variety of words for types of rain would be incomprehensible for a Portuguese speaker.
@JaneinSpain
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Ray. We are focused on learning Castillian now. We don't plan to leave, so hopefully eventually we can learn galego. I already recognize a lot of it when we hear it. Like Alfonso, for example, in the video. I understand what he's saying, so I guess some of it seeping into my brain. As for being too artistic/poetic, I just have to be who I am. It will resonate with some people and not with others. That's OK. I find the culture here very poetic. I try to communicate it as meaningfully as I can.
