Trapped In Idlib: Syria's Last Holdout against Assad and Russia | Foreign Correspondent

Before Ukraine, there was Syria.
Now in its 11th year, this ongoing conflict is Russia’s forgotten war. Since Putin got involved in 2015, Russian military support has helped the dictator Bashar al-Assad turn the tide and take back control of most of the country.
The intense aerial bombardment being felt now in Ukraine is all too familiar to the Syrian people.
In 2016, Syrian journalist Yaman Khatib lived through the brutal Russian bombing campaign which left the city of Aleppo in ruins and delivered it into Assad’s hands.
Khatib fled to neighbouring Turkey, however as seen in this documentary produced by ARTE, Khatib returns back to Syria to see how the people who stayed are faring.
Khatib visits the embattled province of Idlib in the northwest, the last opposition holdout against Assad and his Russian allies.
More than three million people live there, two thirds of them displaced from other parts of the country.
He meets families who’ve just arrived, families who’ve lost everything and the brave people who help them.
Khatib meets Ahlam, a mother and herself a refugee. She and her family have lived in Idlib for a decade.
Every day Ahlam heads out onto the streets seeking out people who’ve just arrived, offering them help. She blogs on social media, hoping to draw attention to their plight.
“We never imagined that one day, in our country, in our own homes, that someone would come to us and say, ‘Leave! Get out! Go live in a tent!"’says Ahlam. “That's why I can truly relate to the pain of others. I've experienced it myself.”
Khatib says that the world’s indifference to Syrians’ plight continues to surprise them.
More than half a million dead. More than six and half million refugees outside the country, and six and half million citizens internally displaced.
No meaningful international help.
Khatib meets Abu Medien, a farmer and father of 8, all the family's belongings all crammed into a truck.
The family has been on the road for three years and have moved 15 times. He wants to go home. “That would be the best thing for us. We don’t want anything, not even a house.”
But with international borders now closed, the people here are stuck, Khatib says, ‘like ghosts’.
Despite the ceasefire in Idlib agreed to by Russia and Turkey in 2020, bombings have continued.
Both Russia and Syria are guilty of war crimes, says the UN, but neither have been held accountable.

Many refugees from Idlib are on TikTok. That’s where I met and made friends with some of them. Their situation is dire. All international aid ended on January 1, 2024. They are dependent on gifts on TikTok to feed their children and buy fuel to heat their leaking tents. Our friendship helps them know they are not forgotten. I hope you will join us there, showing love to our Syrian brothers and sisters.

But, I had saw the civilian people with many children who are escaping the bombards of Assad towards to Turkey boundary, When I have done my soldiering duty boundary of Syria at 2012. They bombarded directly the civilians and killed thousands. Because of that, the world public opinion reacted against Assad and supported the dissidents. This was true at that time. Because, Everybody thought that, the Assad will fall down in a short time. If the Russia had not weaponized and directly supported to Assad, it would be true. But, the Assad and Russia have continued to kill until every piece of the Syria is burned. I really don't understand that hatred of the people. And So, many ethnic and religious groups has occurred in the many places. And Everybody supported any group which is matched to own opinion. So, it has turned a proxy war. Forgive, unite, and look forward to improving the lives of Syrian people.

@@Hugh-GlassThe country is Vietnam, and for 20 years the Americans dropped more bombs on us than all their wars combined and killed over 4 millions Vietnamese including civilians. After the war our country was similar to what you see in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria today, no infrastructure, mass starvation, and civil hatred. The North won and were hunting down those in the South that helped the Americans during the war, this went on for the next decade resulting in a mass exodus of Southern refugees. In 1986 the Vietnamese government decided to change course and embrace unity and economic reform. It was no longer in our country's interest to continue hating our old enemies, we welcomed Americans, Southerners, France, whoever to return and help rebuild our economy. Business and wealth was the main goal and what happened during war was forgiven. Today Vietnam is still a poor country but rising, more importantly there's no hatred, everybody is on the same goal to better themselves under one nation. Syria can do the same. Put all your differences and hatred aside, religious beliefs and ethnicity shouldn't matter. You are all one Syria and work towards a better future for all Syrians.

I agree in principle that holding on to resentment far into the future is counterproductive, but right here and now, you can't expect people to just forget how their lives have been destroyed and their loved ones killed. in many ways Vietnam and Syria are not comparable, the rifts run deeper in the middle east and need to be faced for true reconciliation rather than some misguided attempt to just forget it all. justice must be delivered.

I know because there is a prophecy that talks about the king of the North causing many lands to fall in the time of the end. Russia and it's allies are the king of the North. The prophecy states that he will enter like a flood. Western media has been downplaying Russia's ability and exaggerating it's defeats. Don't worry, God will destroy Russia and all human governments soon enough. Only way to survive is to be on his side. Another prophecy is that there is going to be a declaration of "Peace and security" followed by a sudden attack on All false religion. Basically all religions bare one. That is the beginning of a time period described as the "great tribulation".
