Transverse to Longitudinal 1.8T Swap (Part 2 of 2)

Ойын-сауық

Part 2 of 2! We go on a throwback to a video I filmed about 3 years ago when I replaced my old (fundamentally flawed) AMB 1.8T with a transverse MK4 Jetta AWW 1.8T. I’ve learned a lot and would do many things differently now. I try to break it all down. Hopefully this helps someone save their Audi B6!

    It happens with these old engines! That's why I went with the 034 crankcase breather setup and new vacuum caps on the intake. No vac/boost leaks since the swap!

    beyond grateful for this video, quick questions is your b6 a 6 speed? and were you able to use the b5.5 clutch or did you use the b6 clutch? currently swapping my fwd b5.5 a4 into a b6 awd and isn't much info on all of this online any help would be greatly appreciated

    @@angreyman01 All good! Glad the video was helpful! Yep it’s a 6-spd and I ordered the clutch as a 2005 A4 1.8T

    @@Fizzo20 thanks v much for the quick answer, sorry to bombard you with questions but did grinding down the thermostat end up being your leak? you were speaking about it in your retrospective intro part of the video, thats the only concern for me at this point. if so were ya able to get a good seal?

    @@angreyman01 I should also note that this leak sprung up somewhat recently; I never had a leak from that area of the engine for probably a good 3+ years.

    What bolts (thread and length) did you use to mount the engine to the engine stand?

  • @Fizzo20

    The bolts are currently lost in the garage somewhere lol so when I find them I'll let you know

    3 bolts were M12x1.5x80mm and threaded directly into the block. One was a an M10x1.0x100mm bolt with a nut and 2 washers on either side, going through one of the non-threaded holes in the block

    So you basically sanded down your electronic b6 t-stat/coolant housing and are running it on a conventional VW block?

  • @Fizzo20

    @Fizzo20

    Correct. In hindsight I probably would’ve done the Passat cooling system conversion instead if I’d known about it at the time

    @@Fizzo20 I’ve been looking at the b5.5 hardware and it would be simpler to just adapt the b6 housing in the end vs sourcing all the bits to make it work. Once I start moving all my mounts and stuff over I’ll have a better idea between the different machines holes.

    @@j.b.1526 Very true. I've also heard of people die-grinding out that lip on the block instead so that when replacing the B6 t-stat housing down the road, it's a direct swap. But I'd be curious to see what option you end up going with!
