TRANSOM REPAIR STEP BY STEP!! - Replacing Transom in a Crestliner Aluminum Boat

Ойын-сауық

This video chronicles the step by step replacement of the transom in a 2004 Crestliner 1750 Fishhawk. The original transom was constructed with 3 pieces of 5/8" Marine grade plywood sandwiched together. I decided to replace it with the same material and made sure to waterproof it with a Marine grade Spar varnish. Another option would be to replace the wooden transom with composite Coosa board, although it will make the cost of the project a bit higher, but all the same principles found in this video can be used despite the choice of transom material.

@@AnglingAnarchy Yeah, we can see your relief and excitement at a couple of points where things worked out well. I don't blame you either. Do you have some background in marine repair? I ask because of things like the drain holes tubes, I would have been stumped in how to get those out and replaced.

Just found your video as I’m looking to start this project myself on an old smoker craft I’ve got. I definitely like that you’re just a guy making this work in your garage. Nice to see a project come together so well without having a state of the art boat shop with all the expensive tools. I think a lot of us watching this are just guys working in their garages like you. It caught my attention when you mentioned being in Wisconsin and out on lake Geneva. I’m right down the road from there myself, best of luck to you out fishing.

Nice work on replacing the transom! I know that this is not an easy chore to do as I have watched other videos on doing this. I like the fact that you used those 10" hooks to pull out the old transom and luckily there was enough good wood for these to anchor into, have not seen anyone pull one like this so far. The only thing that I was a little worried about was that shelf was going to come crashing down and dump everything onto your boat but thankfully that did not happen. Hope that you can get this out on the water and catch some nice fish this year! Let us know how it is if you don't mind please and thanks for sharing your video!

I had the same fear about the shelf, but I'd built it pretty sturdy so I was relatively confident it would hold up lol 😳 I've had the boat on the water multiple times now and everything seems to be working great! Great video! Seems like whenever I do something that big, one item ends up slowing things way down. I will say, from experience changing out throttle cables, they usually need adjusting after the engine is running, sometimes you don't get as much open throttle, sometimes you can't get the idle down to where it needs to be.... you'll know if everything is good, the first time on the water. Hopefully that first time on the water will be soon ! Good luck on your trip south !

Only thing I know for sure from talking to a boat builder is that you should use the 3m below water silicone 3m 5200 ,it does not break down over time from water (3m claims) so far I have 5 years on it from transducer mountings and ladder mounts great job looks fantastic .My friend is debating on the marine plywood or the composite stuff . If he really wanted it to last instead of stacking 3 pieces of 5/8" plywood could of just used 2 pieces of 3/4 plywood laminated together with epoxy which would give you 1.5" inch thickness and then fiberglassed over the whole insert until you reached the 1.875 total thickness.

  • @terryerdmann7159

@johnnorris1227 what kind of Epoxy do you use for thus? Also some places pre drill the holes a few sizes bigger... then Epoxy then closed again.. then when they re drill the mew holes they are drilling basically through a solid block of Epoxy plastic there.. they say then it is totally no way for the wood to seep in moisture. What do you think?

Outstanding video. Thank you so much for posting, because I find myself probably having to replace the transom in a 2004 1850 sportfish I purchased in September. Can't believe I researched the heck out of motors to eliminate potential issues but didn't find the problem about crestliners wooden transoms and apparently poor factory work. Anyway, going to have to make it work and I'm thinking of coosa board. That stuff is expensive but I hope to use the boat for at least 10 years. in '03 and '04 I understand crestliner transitioned to 25-in transoms. I'd rather not buy a full 1-in board and a full 3/4-in board, but rather, split a half inch board. But 25 x 2 is 50 last I checked. Was your '04 fishhawk a 25-in transom?

  • @AnglingAnarchy

JLawL I can't remember the exact dimensions, but I'm almost positive mine was less than 24" tall. Make sure you see what they used previously for the transom. Mine was made from 3 sheets of 5/8" marine grade plywood for a width of 1 7/8". Coosa board would probably be the best move and had I known more about it prior to starting this project, that's the route I would have taken. Good luck with your project!

Good video. Cut the drain tubes flush with a pipe cutter would be a suggestion. In my case the copper in the original pressure treated wood reacted with the outside aluminum transom and ate holes in the plate in many places. Therefore I need a new 1/8” transom plate as well as the wood. Crestliner should be ashamed by this design. Thanks though for the video.

Through over 50 years of auto and marine paint and metal repair I’ve seen a lot of evidence that silicone has caused corrosion on a lot of metal and even galvanized painted surfaces. Any marine projects I would use a 3m marine adhesive. Just a little something I’ve ran into over the years. Especially on cars where people have tried to stop a leaky window or something ,the silicone when exposed to the weather showed corrosion right to the edge of the silicone even when applied over good paint. Maybe 2 little to late. Just saw the video? Maybe a little something to consider for someone else trying to get their project done in the future. Good job on the transom repair though. The nuetral cure is what you wanna use on or around any metals because the acetic acid in the other type of silicone will eat away at most metals.
