Hi Katja, I borrowed The Hyunam-dong Bookshop from my library. In Hawaii, we are lucky to have many translated fiction books from Korea and Japan. I can't wait to read it. Aloha friend

I'm particularly drawn to the cozy reads. DallerGut Dream Dept Store has such a cool cover! 😍 It reminds me of Lisa Frank, LOL.

Dallergut sounds absolutely delightful! The Old Woman with the Knife also caught my attention. Glad to see Winter in Sokcho make an appearance! I love that you've spent so much time and effort becoming well-versed in the literature of a single country. It's inspiring and you definitely make me want to pick up more Korean literature!

Thanks, Bethanne! The old woman with the knife has some scenes that feel cinematic. I think how her personal desires began to reshape her could have been explored more, but I'm a fan all the same.

I love that you grouped these by theme. Kim Jiyoung is still waiting for me on my shelf and I am still looking forward to reading it!! But good to know Sahar is one to avoid for a bit or try from a library. I have heard good things about miss kim knows though. All these bookshop books are so cosy. Dallergut dream department store sounds very good. I love that pyschedelic cover. Concerning my daughter made my best books of 2023 list. I am anticipating counsel culture now too! I was so pleasantly surprised by the old woman with the knife and had such a good time with it as well. I think I like elderly main character narratives. I liked pachinko by the author of winter in sokcho and now I need to read this one.

Thanks, Olivia. Concerning My Daughter feels underrated; I was thrilled to see it in your best of 2023. The Woman with the Knife doesn't always get love on booktube, but for me, it ticks a lot of boxes, including older protagonist narrative 😊💛

I have heard of a couple I would like to pick up - If You Live To One Hundred, You Might As Well Be Happy: Lessons for a Long and Joyful Life by Rhee Kun Hoo; Blood of the Old Kings by Kim Sung-il; (maybe) The Healing Season of Pottery (don't remember author)...

This is a great list of South Korean possibilities Katja. I have Kim Jiyoung and Concerning my Daughter and am interested in The Old woman With a Knife and Shoko’s Smile. Loved Cursed Bunny and looking forward to her new collection. Also enjoyed Love in the Big City as well as the two Kyung Sook-Shin, I’ve read- including Please Look After Mother with you. I also really enjoyed Bluebeard’s First Wife by Ha Seong-Nan although Flowers of Mold her earlier Collection wasn’t as successful for me.

@@PageTurnersWithKatja I highly recommend Vita Nostra is you havent already read it. It's incredible and shockingly became my #1 fav book, even more than Malazan. I have a review on my channel too. I really love the Dyachenkos. Their book The Scar is quite awesome too and it's a more traditional fantasy book compared to Vita Nostra. You just gotta get past the first few chapters where the MC is a fucking ASSHOLE before getting cursed and growing as a person. Also you could check out Stanislav Lem. But thats about the extent of my Russian SFF knowledge.

I almost mentioned VN but think they're Ukrainian and wrote in Russian, and that threw me with categorising . Loved it! I haven't read the sequel which was finally translated last year. Thanks, I hadn't heard of The Scar before, I'll add it to my TBR!
