You have to have be the booktuber with the largest range of books. This sounds like it has a lot of cultural insights into Japan. Very heavy stuff. This highlights why writing is so important to instigate much needed change. Great video.

Thanks! I think my interest in so many genres confuses the mysterious algorithm 🤦🏼‍♀️ It's a heavy topic. The book was on my shelf waiting to be picked up for so long. I'm glad I finally read it. Definitely shows the importance of writing in championing change.

Hi Katja, this was a wonderful review of the black box. I lived in Japan for three years. i’m familiar with the conformity that is the social order in Japan.. Bullying is very common and mostly ignored by teachers and even parents. I wasn’t aware of the sexual assault that goes unpunished so I’m really interested in this book. Aloha friend.

Hi Marilyn, I think a lot will resonate for you about her early life in the opening chapters, starting in Japan and then in her teens going to the US as a high school exchange student and again as a university student later. She was also shocked by the outdated laws in Japan and the non-existent support after what happened to her. I hope you can get a copy easily.

I haven’t read it but will consider it. Bullying pervades human society - here in the US it feels like reaching epic proportions given the imprimatur of (but by no means excluded to) the right wing. On the other hand one meets incredible nonconformists in Japan such as are not encountered here where “anything goes” is common and even boring.

So true. You've reminded me: The first time I watched UK parliament in session on TV, I was surprised at the tradition of heckling and jeering at political opponents. It still feels like watching classroom/playground bullies.

There is no crime in this case. That's all. So police and prosecutor discarded Shiori's claim. [Shiori recorded all conversation with police and prosecutor] The prosecutor explained her why dropped this case. The most important reason is a possibility of "she had conscious". Shiori has said "I perfectly lost conscious from restroom of the sushi restaurant to next morning [AM 5:00 at the room of hotel]." But prosecutor pointed out another possibility. In other word, she may have had conscious after leaving sushi restaurant. [The claim of "Black Box" differ from the claim which Shiori did to prosecutor with important points] Do you know, what happened that night[April/03/2015]? Shiori and Yamaguchi entered the sushi restaurant. After that... 1. Shiori fell down on the floor in the restroom of the sushi restaurant. 2. A staff of the sushi restaurant opened the door of the restroom, and discovered her. 3. Shiori came out, and started talking another guy. She continued drinking sake. Yamaguchi was talking with a staff. 4. Shiori and Yamaguchi got in taxi. She was able to talk with him normally. 5. Shiori threw up in the taxi. 6. The taxi pulled up at the hotel. Yamaguchi got out of the taxi. But Shiori was not following. She said "I clean up. I clean up. I dirtied. So I must clean up." [Hotel's staff was watching this scene] Yamaguchi urged her to get out of the taxi. From the point of view of common sense, you should not get rid of the possibility that Shiori had conscious over the night. --------------------------------- Many Japanese know who is liar. Only foreigners, who can not understand Japanese language, are cheated.

Hello, thanks for commenting on this book review. Aside from the book, there are some news articles from what one would hope are reputable agencies, and a few -including the available link - discuss the court case in regard to the new statutory changes in Japan. The newly released film seems to follow the news articles quite closely.
