Transitioning To Natural Hair (Top 10 Tips)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here's my Top 10 Tips for Transitioning hair. I began transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair back in October 2015 and my transitioning hair journey was quite challenging. I experienced lots of knots, tangles and breakage along the way and transitioned for 18 months, before doing the big chop in April 2017.
So having gone through the process, I wanted to give you my transitioning hair tips to help you through your hair journey to natural hair. It can be quite a challenging time and you may become frustrated and feel like giving up along the way, so I’m hoping my video will give you an insight into the journey ahead, in order to motivate & encourage you to keep going. Hope you find it useful x

TOP 10 TIPS FOR TRANSITIONING TO NATURAL HAIR
Tip 1 - REMEMBER YOUR WHY
Make sure you have a strong enough reason WHY you want to transition to natural. A reason that's going to keep you going when things get tough & challenging along the way. Without a real purpose, it may be easier to give up.
Tip 2 - DO YOUR RESEARCH
Begin by researching into the process of transitioning. Look at what others have done on their transitioning journey, methods they've applied and get ideas which you can implement on your own journey. This will help to make things easier, knowing you have a plan.
Tip 3 - IMPLEMENT A GOOD HAIR CARE REGIME
Washing & Conditioning Often
Incorporating both Protein & Moisturising Treatments
Moisturising Your Hair regularly
Sealing With Oils (if need be)
(Keep your hair in good condition)
Tip 4 - LOW MAINTENANCE & PROTECTIVE HAIRSTYLES
Low Maintenance Hairstyles;
Braids outs
Twist Outs
Flexi-rods
Perming rods
Buns
Updos
Protective Hairstyles;
Box braids
Yarn braids
Crochet Braids
Wigs
Weaves
Cornrows
Marley Twists
Faux Locs
Tip 5 - AVOID USING HEAT
Try to avoid using too much heat, especially excessive high heat, as this could lead to heat damage, But if you really must us it, opt for a lower heat setting and ensure you use a heat protectant prior to styling.
Tip 6 - EXPECT TANGLES & BREAKAGE
It’s possible that you may experience knots, tangles & breakage along the way, so just incase you experience it, you’re prepared in advance.
Tip 7 - GOOD DETANGLING SPRAY
Make sure you have a good detangling spray on hand to help you deal with knots & tangles. A good detangling spray will help to detangle your hair, so make sure you spray your hair first, then detangle after.
Here's a good one I use: Mane 'n Tail Detangler; amzn.to/2tIOn4v
Tip 8 - HANDLE YOUR HAIR WITH CARE
You may get frustrated with your hair at times and lose your patience, but try not too. Just take your time, to avoid any unnecessary damage or breakage. Also make sure you don’t have any plans when doing your hair, so you’re not in any rush to finish.
Tip 9 - FOLLOW OTHERS FOR MOTIVATION
It’s a good idea to find people who you feel will motivate, encourage & uplift you on your transitioning journey, so that if you ever feel like giving up, you’ve got somewhere to go to help you stay on track. Some great places for support are; hair forums, instagram pages, articles, blogs & books (as mentioned in Tip 2)
Tip 10 - TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
Make sure you start out with tracking your progress. Sometimes you may get discouraged or think that you’re not making any progress, but in taking pictures you have something to refer back to, which will prove that you actually are getting somewhere.

    I'm about 4 months in right now and I'm tired of it. The back of my hair broke off over a year ago and suddenly stopped relaxing. Every part of my hair is a different length from about 3 inches where it broke to just past shoulder length. My edges might be thinning, my hair's shedding quite a bit. I've never had my hair trimmed/cut & I know I need to but I have severe social anxiety which means I won't go to a hair dresser. I know there's nothing anyone here can do but I felt like I needed to rant lol! Your videos give me a little motivation though so thank you!

    Charlene Raymond Hey I understand I actually decided to start transitioning because my edges are thinning out, and my hair is also resisting relaxers, while your transitioning just continue to cut a few inches of the relaxer out every month it may help a bit, just keep transitioning, your hair will get better, or you can just do the big chop

    Charlene Raymond I'm 7 months post relaxer and to help I just keep my hair in a protective style like Marley twist or box braids. I don't go to a salon for trims I trim my own hair. There are KZread videos to help.

    +Charlene Raymond Awww...you're welcome, glad to hear it 😊 Maybe ask a friend or family member to do it for you and get them to cut it to one level, so it can grow back nicely. Also, if you think it might be too short, you could always consider getting a protective style till it grows out.

    Thanks for the tips. I have to cut off the relaxer. I’m 3 months post relaxer. A hair stylist did my sew in. She braided my hair too tight. I have traction alopecia. I will not put a chemical on my scalp because my follicles are damaged and I have bald spots on both sides of my hair. I have to wait months for my scalp to heal and for my hair to go back. I want to cut the relax out to start all over. My hair is only 10 inches. It’s not a big deal. I had natural hair before.

    hey, I'm 14 and I've been transitioning for 5 months. my hair is always in braids but I've been letting it out for the past 3 months. when I first took it out i used to be able to hold it up in a ponytail or pigtails but ever since the last month I can't seem to hold it up and my relaxed ends aren't as visible anymore. I know my hair has broken off because the relaxed ends are severely damaged but I'm not sure if it's cause my hair is too thick to hold up or if it's just that my hair has broken off.

  • @HealthyAfroHair

    @HealthyAfroHair

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Nora K It sounds like a combination of both breakage and growth over the last few months that's making it difficult to put into a ponytail. But don't worry about it too much. Maybe consider trimming the ends to bring it back to health and if need be, get another protective style to help you along. But you're doing great 👍🏾

    Unfortunately, I don't know how many relaxed or natural subscribers I've lost or gained, because it's not possible to know that information. But when I was relaxed, I discovered through comments, that I had natural people subscribed to my channel, so it's likely I could have relaxed people too. But to be honest, my main focus is to continue sharing hair tips throughout my hair journey and hope it helps others in some way. But thank you and best of luck on your hair journey too.
