I am so happy you are saving this chateau, it is magnificent and I believe you were the right people to own it. You are meticulous with the details. The grande salon is spectacular, with its bright sunlight streaming through those beautiful doors and all of the intricate. plaster work. I know through all of your painstaking work this room is where Carol will be found with her cup of tea when it is all done! I know I would be there if it was my home. Love your vlog! xx
The salon will be glorious! You are so patient matching the broken pieces of plaster! Can't wait to see the wallpaper you choose for this room!
Make a porrigde, put in on the moulding in a rather thick layer, leave it to dry and then break it of - it will take most or all af the flakes without damaging the mouldings And it is inexpensive 😊
I’m with you, Carol. Really love the salon. There’s an incredible amount of work, but it will be beautiful when you you finish. Being a perfectionist does pay off.
I love your attention to detail and the fact that you don't rush through anything but do things correctly. Well done as it will pay off in the end! I admire your tenacity!! Love from Canada xo
If you clean a patch of the original color, you might be amazed at how much it changes. That happened to me, and it was easier to match.
I have no suggestions, but my gosh, that salon is stunning! I can only imagine what it looked back in it's heyday...I am looking forward to how you guys bring it back to life!
This salon is going to be beautiful, your attention to all the details is awesome.
Je suis admirative, et enchantée de la preservation des ces belles bâtisses. Bravo👏
I prefer the Right hand paint swatch that Carol says they painted over the label. Don’t they have color matching computers at the paint store ? That Salon will be stunning when you two finish. It already is. Absolutely gorgeous room.

Agree on the video looks to me it just needs a smidge of blue added to be perfect.
A super soft brush with a Hoover to pick up the dust might work for the molding at the ceiling.
Painted over label not a problem. Just take a sample to any paintstore that mixes paints to order. They will have a spectrographic analyser to match it perfectly. I do not envey you the job of piecing together all the broken mouldings. Great job. regards from the UK
This room is going to be flipping gorgeous! What patience you have getting it done! 👋🏼

Thank you Tonya, It doesn't look like it, but I'm actually quite enjoying the jigsaw...when I'm in the mood!!!
I prefer the paint color that Carol likes. It looks warmer and I think would look lovely with gold leaf. Please get a nice comfy chair to curl up in once the salon is complete :) I can just imagine sitting in there with a good book and a toasty fire in the winter. I hope you can find a similar wall paper. Great progress as always :)

Katie, I bought some lovely second hand chairs a couple of years ago, that are just perfect and the right colour, they are presently still wrapped in plastic in our bedroom, how I dream of that room finished, sat gazing down the parc
I love the soft grey on the left it’s the first one after the white. It’s soft, it’s French and beautiful. The others looks to green. It’s such a spectacular room and Carol your painstaking efforts are so appreciated from this kindred spirit. I can see the salon at dusk and candles lite for a beautiful evening in.
Just a suggestion. Every time you find a solution that 'works' write it down or make a file - I think you will have some valuable information there. That room will be superb when it is done. And the view through those doors ... wow!

There are a couple who have a vlog here, they are also renovating a castle. She's an artist, I think she could paint that wall, so you can make your own wallpaper. But it may be too big a job. In any case, I think it would be absolutely fantastic because she is very good and has made her own wallpapers in their castle. Their vlog is called How to renovate a chateau. Just a tip.
The salon is a beautiful room and so much work to bring it back to life. I think the light grey will go nice and when the suns shining in it will make it a bright room. Loved watching x
The salon is beautiful. Can’t wait to see it finished.
The flakey paint on the mouldings, I'd start with a good brush first, too. Try some different types of bristles, and see which one works best. You are doing such an amazing job, with the huge puzzle, that is the intricate mouldings.... It is going to look so wonderfull, when its all done 😍 The jealousy is REAL! 😂 Actually, if I can make a suggestion? Seeing all the light, coming into the room, I initially thought yellow might be a good colour for the panels. But I can see, why you would want to try and find the original paper 😍 But my suggestion was to paint all the woodwork in ever so slightly different nuances of warm gray and a tiny bit yellow, because it looks like that is what was done originally. And then add touches of gold.... The reason, I push for yellow, is because on camera, the room looks cool, and I think the sunlight through those magnificent windows would just be even more amazing, if yellow was part of the scheme. So I'm thinking those warm grays, with hints of yellow and then gold. And then maybe the fabrics could be yellow... But - it might just be, that the lighting reads differently on camera/screen 😂
That room is going to look amazing when it is finished thank you for sharing
The attention to detail you apply, will make it beautiful
Amazing you go thru piecing them back. I think I would have made a new mold and just made whole medallions. Your a real hero for going thru that. It’s going to be beautiful.

Preservation and perseverance are key, oh and saving it from Adrian!!!!!!!
I looks to me like the inside of the paneling is a different color than the border around it. Both colors appear to closely match the two different areas. You're approaching the decorative scroll work like a jigsaw puzzle. Very smart, in light of the fact that the pieces seem to have been scattered about. The reward will be great with perseverance. Carol, you seem frustrated by the daunting task ahead. Step back and see the incredible progress you've already made. It might not be obvious to you, but it is to me. You've chosen to attack multiple rooms at the same time which makes it harder to see progress. Once you've completely finished a room or two, you'll feel revitalized. For what it's worth, we're all cheering for you. Crack on!
2 жыл бұрын
If he says "crack on " once more I may just crack!!!! Yes on cleaning a section, I discovered the panel trims are cream! The mouldings are coming on well and preserving as much as we can is important to us, even though its a long job. Each room takes moths, so it's nice to have a rest every now and then. But I do go back, it's back to the dining room this week, to finish the paper and trim. Thank you for watching, spring is in the air, so my mood will improve!!!! I hate winter!
There is a remover that can be used on the moldings. Check out very old buildings being renovated in Britain.
The salon is heavenly
Not sure if this will help but Restoration Home - Stoke Hall - Episode Three, Brigadier youtube channel, Andrew Payne, Master Decorator, about 47 minutes into the video, strips paint from plaster moldings. I couldn't tell you how he did it but he peeled the paint off with his hands. He used chemicals and stuff that looked like paper. Also, I would suggest scoring the moldings before you glue them on; in short, use something like a carpet knife and and scrape lines on the back of the molding, perhaps do the same to the wood paneling where the molding will be fitted and then, glue them together. The glue will hold better on a rough ridged surface as compared to a smooth slick surface.
I would try a really soft Brussels paint brush first!
Yes Mary Allen, a book of instructions including all tricks of the trade including businesses used would be helpful for others who are redoing any older home, or even add old lovely features to newer homes. Sales might help with $ for your lovely chateau.
Have you tried a keyboard vacuum cleaner? They have a soft but firm brush on it that might be helpful in getting your dirt off without taking the detail. Just a thought 💭🤔
Carol, as I look at the beautiful salon space and the beautiful grays used both historically and your plans, I was struck by the possibility of using silver leaf on the decorative moldings and mirror. It would be a luxurious room. Just my thoughts. Best to you both. Tim

Look into using dumond peel away stripper. I used to remove paint off a huge plaster ceiling so I could then do repair. It was amazing stripper and no harsh chemical. I had to trowel it on the ceiling using a plaster hawk. I put about 3/8" thick and then let it do its job. In about 8 hours the paint would come loose and fall to the floor. I had kraft paper on the floor to capture the mess. After it all fell off, then I wash the plaster to remove any residue. It worked for me and was sent from heaven above!

It really is x
As far as I can tell on the screen (which isn't a whole lot, colours and screens are complicated) the grey on the left is closer to the origjnal, the one on the right looks a bit yellowed. The old paint might have yellowed quite a bit as well. One trick I found pretty much by accident is putting a bit of paint stripper onto severely yellowed paint and wiping it off after a minute or two. Often that just removes the yellowing and reveals something much closer to the original colour. Since this is a south-facing room and oil-based paints tend to yellow from darkness the existing paint probably isn't all that bad but you might still find a difference.
I would suggest Swann Morton surgical blades number 23 to scrape of the paint. You can fit those in a holder and exchange. Are being sold also non sterile in alufoil pack of 10.
You could always take off a complete moulding for the needed corners then make the necessary sets as needed! 🤷♀️
One gigantic jig saw puzzle of broken fell down parts. Wow what patience
Wow Carole, that looks like a job that requires much patience, but what a reward when it all comes together! No doubt you will continue to "crack on" and make it all good!

I would recommend putting cowls on your chimneys because the crows will come back every year to nest x
There is a product that you coat the detailed moldings with and then cover with cling film and then peel it back after a while and it removes the paint from the mouldings , I tried to find it on Tims vidio on restoration chateau but could not find it, but if I doI will try to post it to you, but I am not very good at this technology stuff . Good luck you are doing a splendid job x
A huge jigsaw puzzle!!!
Oh my God, you poor darling. You have your work ahead of you. Crack on, everything you do will make a difference.!!!!!
For kneeling around I put an old cushion in a plastic bag, tape it up and kneel on it, doesn't soil the cushion, keeps knees safe !

Unfortunately the salon floor is covered in nails, so the plastic bag would get caught. I do do that in the garden though
dont forget to take breaks from renos as normal redecorating can be stressful enough. Thank you for sharing your journey and best of luck

Now that spring is in the air, I will definitely be resting more in the sunshine
Love your salon. It will be a labour of love for sure. Maybe you can use a stiffer bristle brush to get the flaky paint off of the molding or a Dremel sanding bit ( I think this would be to labour intensive). Go for the brush. If you take a piece of the paper to the paint store, they should be able to match up the paint.
I like the gray to the left or middle.
I studied architectural history at University of Oxford. It is great to see this beautiful part of history being restored. I just came across this channel and was this episode. It looks like moisture and water damage. I hope that any water or moisture problems have been remedied, to ensure this is not a continued problem. If you have already you can disregard this. You might, if you have not already, want to talk with a local plasterer or woodsman regarding steps and processes. It could just save you time in learning more. Again, if you have done this just disregard. Its great to see you doing this restoration to save this piece of history. Cheers.

Hi James, thankfully the majority of the roof has been replaced, gutters and drains too, we just need to replaced the flashing when the render is done. Then there's the doors and windows to address! The floors are the worst, all the joists have had to be replaced on the ground floor, the salon is next onbthe list, but its a huge job just removing the old floor. I'm just getting ahead of myself before any more damage is made in the process. Thank you for watching.

@ Thank you for your comment and you are welcome. I figured you likely had the roof and preventative work done. Sometimes I see people with good intentions try to remodel without doing this only to delay future problems. It is great to see you are going through the proper process. It is a lot of work but will be worth it. I love doing this work myself. All the best.

Put a log burner in. You get more heat output than a open fire. I can see you will use the room more often than others
That is really a fabulous wallpaper! I hope you can find d sth similar😉
With the cornices I've seen professional restorers that have a product that they paint on the cornice and what ever other moulding they use it on, then add a plastic sheet over it and wait and when it's done it takes all the paint off. Sorry can't help with name but hope that helps anyway. Probably best to not sand the cornice due to it being plaster and very delicate. Since you can't find a similar paper you should be able to get the one you have printed.
Even if you "feel like cursing" you are an extremely patient woman! I know you haven't finished but good job on what has been accomplished so far on the moulding in the salon!

We had a few sliders...roof tiles slipping, but nothing major
Carol, why don’t you get one good example of each type of molding and then a make rubber/acrylic mould for each one. Then use acrylic resin to reproduce the number of moldings that you need. By the time they are painted you won’t be able to tell the difference from the original ones and they will last forever. That way you could also supply moldings to other Chateau owners and make a little profit. It would be well worth the effort as I am sure lots of people would be interested in purchasing the molds.
I used the peel away system on the coving in my house Carol...there are two you can choose from...it depends on the paint...you can use tester kits to see if it's any good for what you want...it brought the detail on the coving back to life...it still takes some work... unfortunately I don't think there's an easy route.

Look into Peel Away. Used in historical mansions on fine detail to remove layers of paint with no damage to structure.

I used that a very long time ago, fabulous product, will look into the cost, good thinking
Try reaching out the the conservators at the Versace Pallas. There are a few KZread videos that they have done recently.
I’d suggest trying a toothbrush to get the flaking paint off the mouldings. You can start with soft bristles moving up to firmer bristles if necessary and if the plaster can take it.
new to the channel, no doubt its already been covered but this chateau looks like the real thing not a late 19th century knock off. One can only imagine what it would be like to live with a collection of old master paintings. Arguably de la Ferte is even better! One shutters to recall when the 'right thing to do' was to toss out the relics and 'modernize'. Don't have much money but am fairly adept at architectural drawings and would be willing to pitch in if it would help
The fire place I would replace with a second hand one maybe, rebuilt which would be the more expensive to do 🧐 umm decision time
my suggestion is a little compressed air sprayer with a gentle spray should remove the flaking 😀
Hi Carole, looks like you have your hands full!!! ( LOVE the sunshine.) I love the wallpaper in the corner. Are you going to do something like that? That fireplace made me cringe a bit thinking of all the work that needs doing. Good luck! Love from Wisconsin

Enjoying you both "bantering" and throwing the paper towel...too funny...all knowing that its "love" and "just passing time together" - I'll give my opinion - the MIDDLE gray is my choice...the one on the right of this choice is close to the "dirty" color...but I think after you clean the paneling to compare the color, you'll see that the middle will be the best.
