Hi kids, Get your asparagus and artichokes planted ASAP. They take about 3-4 yrs to start to really produce. Kinda like trees. They multiply so they'll need a lot of their own space to live for years. Strawberries in a contained space need their own bed too. If you plant mint IN POTS and place everywhere to naturally repel rodents. Pots because if you plant in ground it spreads like wild fire and will take over the garden. Don't forget cat nip :)

A student of soil science and a food garden educator, this episode made my heart so happy! I ADORE seeing people plant their first garden. One of my favourite experiences ever was teaching a worm composing and balcony gardening workshop at a community centre in my neighborhood, then, a few months later, running into someone who took the workshop and having them tell me all the things they had growing. Growing your own foods is an incredibly joyous and satisfying process. Welcome! ❤🌱🌻🥦🍓

Outside kitties typically have a lot of fleas. I wouldn't have them sleep with me. Watch to see if you start seeing flea bites on you. My old house was infested with fleas when I moved in and we still have them. We fight them daily. I have bites all over me because I sleep with 2 of my dogs and my kitty has them and she's inside. I tried flea medication on my dogs and it caused rashes on them so I just comb them and kill the fleas I catch in a small container of laundry detergent.....it's awful!

A masterclass in how veggie gardens should be done. I am curious about the garlic, though. I was taught you plant in the beginning of autumn and harvest the beginning of summer, as it needs cold for the bulbs to develop. I am going to follow the progress with great interest. I am a keen no-dig gardener and have used cardboard with compost for a while, but even so, I learned a lot today. Thanks for including educational stuff like this.

The kale you saw and touched are collard greens, “couves”. They do well in Portugal. They are a must in a Portuguese garden. They are used in Portuguese cuisine, especially for “caldo verde”, the popular Portuguese soup. You will find this soup in many Portuguese restaurants. Farmers also cut them, mix it with water and a bit of flour, and feed them to the chickens.

Glad your getting help in the garden, compost tea is smart natural way to feed your plants. If you add a bubbler stone it helps mix and oxygenate it as well Please learn from my own past mistakes. Your terraces are very rocky (aka dirt) and you may have issues getting them to hold moisture, a 2-3 inch layer of sand with another few inches of topsoil on top will go long way to help you get the most of them.. I would just push the extra dirt downhill from digging the holes, and leave the hole so when you layer new SOIL in it fills said holes.. talk with others about a good run off plan as well, swells on the edge work well if you add drain tile over flow along them before backfilling. Mesh fabric is great along the hillside face to help control run off on them, as the plants grow through them it helps hold it all in place. Love the extra large terrace, be nice place for a small barn in the future and grass to raise a few animals on. P.s. You can cut the cost on topsoil alot by talking to local farmers and asking to by up any old mature piles, you can then mix it with straw and alot less top soil for a great top layer for you terraces. Warning though if it really fresh you may need to let it leach out a season so it's not to hot (nitrogen rich) for you plants and causes with them.

Hi Drew , here is what we used to break up and release the goodness in clay. Gypsum Clay Breaker helps improve the physical condition of heavy clay soils. Soil particles are brought together into clumps, thus enabling better water penetration. Root development and the intake of other essential nutrients are assisted by this products' calcium content. I also use the cardboard method. Having a tarp and bunny cords are very handy to have in the car for the you buy straw. If you're growing blueberries, keep your coffee grounds, compost them in a worm farm to provide super food for the blueberries. I loved seeing your permaculture guy at work. He sounds quite a learned and practiced gent. His knowledge ia like gold. I love Ruth Stout.

That was fascinating. I don't know how you find the best artisans/tradespeople/experts, but I feel like I'm learning so much. Super entertaining. My favourite channel. ☺️

You two are so blessed moving away from America and all our chemicals in food and soil. I’m learning so much on what not to do. God bless and I keep praying for you. God is sending all the right people into your lives🙏🏼💕🥰

Thanks for the video. Great to see you using the permaculture method. I used that for over 40 years in South Australia. It takes time to improve your soil using this method but you will never look back. I used 5 layers of wet newspaper as the base. My garden improved every year. Lots of worms kept the soil aerated.

This video was awesome and educative as well! Maybe you should plant repulsive flowers such as eyelet, but also basel for the tomatoes, marigold, calendula or nasturtium. These flowers are also edible and beautiful! Your place is paradise!
