Transformers Shockwave Generation One repair - Toy Polloi
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Restoring a recently donated Generation one Transformers Shockwave. He was suffering from some common issues for this figure, loose legs, and knees that won't hold up. And the worst issue is the screw pegs that hold the chest on snapping under the pressure of the shoulder springs, making his head fall off. I fix all these and a few more along the way to get this Shockwave in a displayable state.

It's so sad to see when rare toys had bad owners. Wonderful restoration.
From what I’ve heard, the old Shockwave toys are absolute nightmares to restore. Bad tolerances, brittle plastic, degrading rubber, corroded batteries, faulty electronics, at least it doesn’t have any gold plastic!

My very favourite Transformer ever: Shockwave! Oh thank you.
You've got the magic touch, Dave. I'm so happy to see that parts were able to be used to complete yours and that the RadioShack battery didn't explode. I remember "trading for the weekend" with a neighbor and when he returned it, Shockwave was missing his hose. I of course questioned him immediately and he said his 2 year old sister got a hold of it and ripped it off. We remained friends but we never traded toys after that day - never liked his sister much, either 😉.

Thanks again Michael. These are very fun, if fiddly, to work on. I plan to work on more of your collection in future. Just trying to figure out which one next would make a good video.

@@toypolloi You are most welcome, Dave. I'm really enjoying watching these all get a new lease on life and your ingenuity never ceases to amaze me.
I’m always so amazed at all of the engineering that went into designing these older G1 transformer figures. I know as a child in the 80’s, I was blown away when Transformers came out and even the Gobots to certain degree. I love watching videos of Dave doing transformer repairs. I find these videos to be very useful and informative. As always, thank you so much for sharing these great techniques for repairing toys and I’m looking forward to seeing the next one! Cheers!
Even my KO Shockwave have the same issue with the loose leg. The trigger is stuck too, but now I know how to take it apart without breaking it thanks to you :)
You know, I was wondering if you ever had to deal with broken screw posts and luckily this video showed that you have. I have a transformer with 3 broken screw posts in the legs so I hope this fix will work on them. Thanks for making these because it's always nice seeing someone actually do a fix before I try it myself.

Depends on the plastic, but this worked well on shockwave. Cheers
I love your videos. I wish you were my next door neighbor. Put them in a warm car in the summer. That will soften the plastic just enough that the bow in the shoulder/body to relax and reset once pulled out.
Learning how to make your own springs would be pretty invaluable for toy repair. I imagine youtube would have you covered with tutorials
I had the grey non-Transformers version of this figure from either Poundstretcher or What Every Woman Wants store in the UK. As a kid I didn't realise it wasn't an official Transformers release.
Toys back then used all sorts of weird techniques for articulation, it was probably for the best when they started using ball joints in generation 2.
You are doing God's work my friend.
I loved this one because it reminds me of the Shockwave I fixed. It took me a couple of years to restore my G1 Shockwave. I had to replace the chest, get a new spring(used one from a bic pen), a new head, a new nozzle, fixed the leg springs, but it was WELL worth it.
Great job he is a stubborn boy I’ve worked on mine a few times my mom used to hide him from me because I ran around the house shooting it all day and it was loud lol
10:12 cut a small piece of a plastic straw and slide it over the screw repair and pack it with milliput.
I think I would have thickened the wires with something ( another wire or two in the braid?) and rolled the ends and glued them so the tube would be one piece and both ends would have a stop to keep them in place. If the shrink tube is flexible enough, that is. Cool fix!
lucky, very lucky, corroded battery, but no leaks :)

And it's a Radio Shack battery! That must be a collector's item in and of itself by now!
Wow I didn't realize how complex, technical and fragile shockwave was. I had that toy as a kid it was my favorite transformer. When you tested him with the laser it made the sounds and lite up, I got a flashback. You cut a coil out of the springs that was exactly what I was thinking. You did a good job, you seem to have a lot of patience for tedious stuff like that, it's an obedience and a gift for things like that, you're pretty skilled and talented Mr Polloi, maybe it's just me but I feel like you have been making some really good videos lately, I like the one where you were talking about what you would do with your collection when you pass away, that got me thinking about myself and I'm still not sure, it would be nice to think that whoever hands it ends up in has some kind of apperception for it, like I said i don't know probably thinking to far ahead, anyways another great video and I learned something from it.
I had a grey and red knock-off version of Shockwave when I was a kid.
I had 2 Shockwave's back in the day and both of them had this leg issue straight out of the box. I assumed it was a design flaw. 😔

It's not a great design. And requires such a small amount of pressure to work. I could see why it would be a trouble from the start.
Hell yeah!!! More Transformers figures
So much love in this restoration! Thanks I think I'm brave enough now to have a fix on my Shockwave.👍
Saving the world, one toy at a time. Ingenious fixes again.
Ugh, the old Shockwave I have has that exact same abdominal bend thing going on. Figured I'd clamp both sides down and give it some gentle time with a hair dryer.
I managed to complete my Shockwave with a few transplants on my own by just doing some exploratory surgery. Very proud that it worked and I managed to not snap the blaster when attempting to pull out the lightbulb.
Great job Dave!!!
Beware of the broken purple knee joint. I was fortunate enough to get mine fixed with CA glue, but I've been quite ginger with it ever since.
Excellent topic! I’ve got a barely-together “Shackwave” complete, hey deteriorating. Looking forward to sitting down and taking notes!
I have a great way to fix screw post, but this was good
Using a heat gun (or even a hair dryer) on the midsection may allow the plastic to relax and straighten out.
🤣 where were you when I broke my cousin’s Shockwave that Christmas 😂👍🏽
Awesome fix
Fantastic video. I have one that is broken. Time to dig it out, and try this on that one. Only that would have made the video better would have been to see one of them in gun mode. I understand how brittle they are though.
Have you considered adding epoxy to reinforce the repairs you did with the plastic weld? It might keep the same thing from happening in the future. Also, cutting away a bit of the coil and stretching a little in the springs to lessen the pressure I’d also suggest using wire ties to hold the torso together during cure time and a heat gun to soften the plastic enough to remove the curve from the pieces that were pushed apart
Awesome fixes, man!! Now, uf you can figure out here to fix a Soundwave cassette door so that it will stay shut, I'd love to see a video about that!!!
Great video Dave. I did a few videos that I had said that you had inspired me to get some tools from Amazon.
Awesome Fix Great Job!
do you have any alternative ideas to replace the hose? Although the heat shrink looks great, just wonder how that will do to any heat exposure (e.g. sunlight through glass..)

GenXToysGeek [Jody] A low CC Motorcycle Carburetor pipe might do the job although i certainly wouldn't advise letting your toys bathe in direct sunlight.
Always wondered when shockwave would come up seeing as hes always broken another g1 classicthats always broken is omega supreme. Very good and informative video thanks for the solid content
I never had this version of Shockwave. I ended up with the RadioShack "gray" version that wasn't branded with Transformers at all.
Great fix Dave.🙂 It sure did not feel like a long video at all to me...I do not think that 28:51 has ever gone by so fast. Take care.
Brilliant!
Very cool!
A very cool figure! You’ve made me want to go and start collecting some G1 figures now! 😉 And, if I need to do repairs, this channel will be my first stop on how to do them
Amazing video and great tips thank you so much !!

Glad you enjoyed it!
All the toys we had, We never had this for some reason. I do remember seeing him at an Illinois radio shack (shack wave) just before transformers broke out.
Hello Dave! There are reproduction hoses out there for Shockwave's arm cannon. I have one on my own. Also, great idea about the springs! If I ever need to tear mine apart again I will do that
Another great restoration Dave. I'd be interested to see if you could come up with a way to fix that broken clear purple plastic gun barrel. I can remember seeing a Shockwave toy in the window of a Toyshop in France, when I was on holiday with my Mum and Dad as a little boy, but it was a Sunday and the shop was closed and we were leaving that same day (if it'd been open I could've probably asked for it as a Birthday or Xmas present). A year or so later though, I randomly found a Galactic Man figure in my local Tandy back here in the UK, the figure Hasbro licensed to use as Shockwave, and best of all it was only around a tenner, about a third of the price of something like a Galvatron. A bit of purple and yellow AirFix paint later and I finally had the Shockwave figure I'd wanted so badly in France.
Those G1 Shockwave or really expensive even in bad condition some of them go for $80 even up to $70 in bad condition and it meant box they go for $200 there was a guy selling a G1 Shockwave in the package box wasn't even damage it went for $1,000

A load of KOs about too that look pretty much exactly like the original. I hope that guy got a real one.
PTFE tape is also known as plumber's tape (or those that don't know).
I have a shackwave that is in immaculate condition. This is a good reference in case I have to fix anything on him. Has the box and the rubber hose.
After watching this I'm worried about my Galactic Man. It's mint right now and hopefully it will stay that way. If not, at least I've got some fixes to try. Cheers Dave.
Cool~ This robot is meant to be excellent.
I've found that when repairing screw pillars, gluing an extra bit of material around the outside can help quite a bit. The break is held in multiple directions and there's just a bit more material attached either side of the break. The best material for it tends to vary on the material one is repairing but I've had most success with very very thin styrene sheet and plastic glue or, believe it or not, a single sheet of tissue paper saturated with superglue. Not sure if there's the room to do so on this particular figure but a toy repairer can never have too many techniques in their arsenal!

I would normally do that as well. But there is no space on this toy at all. the arms use the post as a pivot point.

Nice fix again! You have a knack at this. I think I'll try that plumber's tape on my g1 astrotrain so he can stand properly. Do you have any suggestions on g1 reflector ( Viewfinder's shoulder) pegs?

Didn't you know there's there's two shock waves I do not know if it do UK there's RadioShack but there is a Shockwave that is in grey and red that was only exclusive to Radio Shack
Some nice fixes! I got lucky with the Shockwave I picked up a few years ago as he is in pretty good condition, apart from the rubber hose that's starting to rot. He does have quite loud & annoying electronics though...I wonder how many parents replaced the battery after the first one died? :D
@Brickerbrack
2 жыл бұрын
Or just took the battery out in the first place? I've never done that with Shockwave (I don't have the original, but I do have a decent KO), but a lot of later Transformers have had sound effects that easily (and _accidentally)_ trigger, and I've often taken the batteries out of those to prevent annoying noises every time I play with them...
What would happen if you placed a coat of the plastic weld over the insides of the piece? or over the whole piece? would it make the piece less brittle? would you notice the coat over its original finish?
Could you bend the top part back to straight in warm water?
always fun to watch. for those impressed with old transformers engineering you should try and disassemble some of the older power ranger/sentai megazords, those can be crazy over engineered. I once tried to fix a DX saidaioh....that one is insane inside.
Mine broke as well with the shoulder posts. Unfortunately one of the posts completely disintegrated. I took him apart and noticed the previous owner had done the same and replaced the shoulder screws with longer and THICKER screws. Not sure how to fix. Maybe sell for parts or keep as spare for the other one I have
This was my favorite G1 transformer as a kid. I remember always being so careful with him when I played because I would have been crushed if he broke. I worried about the arm hose breaking and now all these years later for the 1st time I realize there were ACTUALLY wires inside that hose. I guess as a kid I always thought the wires ran through the length of the arm somehow. This toy looked great in both modes and I loved Shockwave because he had one of the best ratios of toy to cartoon accuracy factors. Some didn't fare so well (I'm lookin' at you Ratchet, Ironhide & Megatron!).
On the battery.... Never in my entire life have I seen a PP3 leak. i don't think they can... Explode? I've heard of that, but leak? Never.
My G1 shockwave is more or less in good shape, but the rubber tube that connects the light-up arm to the chest has rotted away over time. I wish there was a way to just replace the rubber tube without taking any of the rest of the figure apart like was shown here. Too complicated a business for me!
Do you have a link for those longer screws I can't seem to find them anywhere.
Toy Polloi I have a Shockwave in great condition with working electronics but need to remove 1 stripped screw from the lower right backside to replace a damaged leg any help with this issue would be great thanks!
Have you tried non scented baby wipes to clean delicate toys, Dave? I use them all the time - and they're also great for initial and gentle cleaning of old vinyl records, too.

Forget the plastic glueing back together , what I did was bought long screws and use metal break line tubes to go through the shoulders to guide the screws to pull both sides together . Works 100 times Better than your method and I have repair 5 shockwaves the same way .

Yes, I have videos on fixing Zartan and other GIJoe figures.
Could a decent hairdryer on a high setting with a concentrator nozzle, be a solution for warped plastics like Shockwave's chest piece? It's hot enough to make the plastic more malleable, but there's no water to affect electronics, or excessive heat, like a heatgun/paint stripper. Just an idea to try.
The only issue that my Shockwave has that he limps
