I know this game has little to do with the plot of the show, but getting a breakdown of Armada as someone who grew up with Transformers, but not this series specifically was legitimately interesting.

So to cut is short for the things he cut in terms of plot: minicons are a slave race created by Unicron, intended to corrupt cybertronians and this multiversal cluster as a whole. It kinda backfired when time travelling humans messed up the slave part so minicons became independent which sucked a lot of power from the chaos bringer and left him near Cybertron locked in planet mode. Armada's plot happens, three great weapons are collected by the decepticons and used to kill OP. Transformers leave Earth and through a sci fi B plot accidentaly reawaken Unicron, finale ensues Starscream and Megatron sacrifice themselves and Sideways escapes to the movieverse where he is tracked down by NEST and killed by Sideswipe.

My fav charicter of the show was the mouse cursor. He was always vibeing while the others fight

I was so disappointed that you couldn't play as the Decepticons with this game. I'd have loved nothing more than to fly around as Starscream. Also, I love the ragdolling in this game. I get some people hate it, but half of my fun with this game was a kid was taking Optimus to the boss arena in the first level after I had already beaten it to get him lasered off by the spider bots, jumping the second they fired, to launch him across the map and see how the ragdoll physics would handle it. I even bullied the minicons with it a bit in that same level.

Armada Starscream sucked and had an awful robot design.

Hi! One of the semi-experts on the game here. Great video! Thank you so much for bringing more light to Transformers (2004), I feel like it's one of those games that just never got the attention it deserved when it came out. That being said, here's some extra info/clarifying things (it's a lot): 9:37 : Originally, the fight in Antarctica was supposed to be Demolisher... so this similarity to the Armada story wasn't even supposed to exist. Demolisher got cut due to time constraints. 12:42 : Default inverted Y axis is bad. Thank you for turning it off. 12:48 : You move slower and make less noise while moving in 1st person. Lets you sneak up on some enemies or sneak by them altogether. 14:29 : It's a bit slow, but it did come out in 2004. Around the same era as the early Halo games, the Metroid Prime series, and Star Wars Battlefront, none of which are very fast feeling games. 15:42 : "Acting as a second health bar" Not exactly. The increased health bar comes from having multiple minicons of the same color. The armor minicons directly reduce the damage you take. 19:25 : Powerlinxing does drain your health, but gradually restores half of what it drained after it's done. Cuts back on the cost of it a lot. 21:14 : The length of the level might've been part of the decision, but processing power was the bigger issue. The level was just too big. 22:13 : It's not exactly scripted; he'll always try to rush you to do this attack at the start of the fight, but where he throws you is mostly random. Landing in that river is one of the best spots since the water can sometimes stop his bullets. 23:29 : Ouch, hit with the auto-turnaround. Not sure why it tripped there though, since iirc it normally only happens on the invisible walls at the edge of the level. 26:16 : In some cut files, this ship is referred to as the Nemesis. Not sure why it got changed to a generic "Starship" though. 27:38 : Highjump can be passive, with a PCSX2 cheat code or a mod I made (if you're willing to softmod your console). 29:53 : More cut content, Alaska was originally where the player would find a post-game quest for crystalized energon. Odds are Tidal Wave was headed there for a shipment or to supply mining operations. Also, Alaska was originally supposed to be Greenland, which makes Tidal Wave's location in the Atlantic make more sense. 30:39 : Gotta kill the snipers. Wherever they flee, hunt them down. Chase them to the ends of the earth. 31:02 : That slow-mo normally happens when a melee attack would kill the enemy you're hitting. Not sure why it happens for non-lethal hits on buildings. 34:36 : "He was planned, alongside with Smokescreen." Not really. They're in an old version of the script of the game, but that was abandoned very, very early in development. The Unicron fight, on the other hand, was added on very late in development. 36:40 : There's a mod for re-challenging bosses, including Unicron :)

@@Xeno-The-Wanderer Over the course of two year development cycle, they dropped quite a lot of concepts. There was a "Lightning Rod" and "Heavy Tank" enemy that was cut, alongside a Jetbike vehicle. To be fair, these were cut because they didn't really fit into the design of the game anymore. Also Jetbikes were just kind of redundant considering you could turn into a car. To clarify, these things weren't cut due to time constraints. They just didn't fit into the game much. We pretty much got a complete package. If a remake does come out, I hope they add in Smokescreen and Scavenger. That would be awesome. I'm aware the current design of the game never really had those two characters in it (they were conceptualized to be in the game back in 2002), but it'd be nice to have more playable characters. It doesn't interfere with the game to add them in, either.

@@JT-yh2zn there’s a lot they could added into the game along with the interesting cut content like a way to include Super mode would be nice, have a partner system to allow another Autobot to help you out with a special tag team attack or something thus bring in Jetfire as a character where having him and Optimus on the same team makes Jet Optimus, make Megatron have Tidal Wave combined with him either as part of or a separate boss battle, I can see Sideways as a sort of roaming boss that could drop minicons if you can beat him before he escapes or something, figure out a way to include Unicron’s robot mode possibly as like a level after beating planet mode, if it was a remake possibly using real life minicons and show them equipped to the transformers physically in robot mode, maybe make Overload a secret character you get for 100% completion… I wonder if the minicon weapons could be made into an element of the game just to further add stuff from the show in for a theoretical remake

The Transformera Armada game is my favorite TF game of all time, they really need to remake it with all the cut content and port it to PC for easier modding, the whole Minicon mechanic was really cool, though the high jump should be a permanent upgrade without taking up a Minicon slot

Hasbro really did went “I’m not going to wait another 20 years to use the name bumblebee so I’m going to fucking sue you”

I love the Unicron Trilogy. Despite it's issues. Armada Prime is one of my favorite designs of the character.

Fun Fact: Daran Norris is also the voice of Knock Out (one of my favorite Decepticons, personally) in Transformers: Prime.

When I learned that fact and I came back to playing this game on an emulator I couldn't un hear Knockout anytime Red Alert spoke lol

One of my favorite details in this game is the dynamic music soundtrack where the intensity level increases when encountering multiple enemies. Another favorite detail is the cinematic cutscenes varies on which character you play as (eg. Having Hotshot or Red Alert appear to confront Megatron instead of Optimus), Melbourne House didn't have to render and re-render those cutscenes, but they did it anyway.

The soundtrack of this game is one of my favorites of any game, every area and boss fight has great music to go along with it

I bought this game for $20 at the scholastic book fair when I was in 5th grade. Best book fair purchase I ever made.

this was the series that introduced me to transformers along with the mid 2000s "Robots in disguise " and its so interesting seeing this series again after god knows how long and not remembering much except a bunch of disconnected scenes from different arcs.

a thing i always remembered thats probably only true for the italian dubbing (which is probably not even documented well) is that some of the voice actors were shared with megaman ntwarrior which was also airing arround the same time frame... so you get one of the humans speaking like megaman.exe and the girl sounding like miss madd and its a bit of a trip

I used to play the demo for this all the time on the Driver 3 disc. I can't believe how lucky I was to actually find the full game as a kid too. Never beat it though, I got stuck on the volcano level. I actually loved those clunky controls. Charging up speed with those heavy robot legs really immersed me.

God this is like my childhood slapping my face and telling me to play this again. The Soundtrack is so good, Also, some fast facts from a nerd: 1) Cyclonus's grab is an attack he can do in Melee at random. It's amazing. 2) The Jet Drones get re-used as snipers in Fall of Cybertron 3) Demolishor was planned as another boss within Alaska's caves 4) The Dev team had a Mini-Con themed beverage menu at the launch of the game

If only we could get a re-release for this game with a remaster and with the intended content that would make my life. Considering Hasbro has been releasing new figures of Armada with the Leagcy line now would be a fantastic time to do all that, hell they are currently in talks with Activision trying to get those games back.

Here's some tips on Commander Mode: -Minicon placement is modified, so you'll get certain minicons faster than others. -Shepard, the minicon vision ability, has been moved from its original location. You'll have to reach the top of the volcano, turn around, and fly downwards and around a cliffside. -You don't need to use the wingpack minicon to reach the bottom of the volcano without taking significant damage. If you turn into vehicle mode, you take less fall damage. -A common strat against Megatron is to equip the health regen minicon and hide under the stage to recover your health. In Commander Mode, Megatron also has one of his own, though it recovers his health slower than yours. -To challenge Unicron, you'll need to find all 40 minicons. -If you have to use melee attacks, enter Powerlinx first. I think it makes your melee attacks (not weapon attacks) stronger. It won't work against Megatron.

The AI in this game was really ahead of its time I think, sure there were other games with really smart aI but still, 20 yrs later this game is still a very good game, I'd go as far to say this should be the golden standard of a good transformers game

Armada was my first exposure to transformers. The one that started it all. It will always have a special place in my heart.

I really hope he’ll do a video on Transformers: Devastation at some point, cause that game kicks ASS. Also I like MGR so I assume I’m biased

Fun fact: according to in-game unlockable story boards from developement, the second Starscream encounter was originally supposed to be Demolishor. Also, I personally would have also liked to play as the Decepticons as well. Also, I could NEVER find the data disk that contained the theme song to Transformers Armada.

Fun fact: There's a lot of references to cut stuff berried in the code of this game. are references to a lot of cut things, not only Jetfire and Smokescreen but Scavenger, Blurr, Sideswipe, Demolishor and Sideways as well. There is also an earlier script draft with a lot more story which would have had the kids in it and Sideways would have made a full appearance, but it was not used for some reason.

The script draft wasn't used because development completely restarted in the beginning of 2003. Therefore, everything that was worked on prior to 2003 was thrown out (including that story draft).

I remember playing this game as a kid but I never knew it was an Armada game

This was actually my first experience with transformers at very young age so I basically worshipped this game. Ever since that and my watching on g1 and animated I've become a transformers fan. I even enjoyed Transformers Prime. I just really wished this game got a remaster with better controls, a lot more content and with more story as you said.

Armada was my introduction to Transformers, I remember finding this game on a shelf and was absolutely ecstatic over it, as kid I was little disappointed that there wasn't a trailer with prime or that I couldn't get a powerlinx mode with him, but enjoyed the heck out of this game, my copy always had a nasty habit of corruption of its save files, needless to say I did SO many playthroughs with this game. The only time I had no problem picking up a beaten game and doing a replay.

I beat this game back in the day but, this is the first time I've seen Megatron's moveset. The first time he kicked me, I fell and landed on one of the legs holding up his arena. From there, I couldn't get back up and I shot him through the floor until he died... The saddest part of this game is that they couldn't fully animate the Unicron fight. They simply didn't have enough space left for him to transform. I think this was also the case for the omitted characters, such as Demolisher and Jetfire. It's not hard to see why. For a PS2 title, this was very pretty back in '04.

The Armada comic book was so damn good it lasted long enough to become Energon (no renumber just changed titles) till issue 30 when it got cancelled due to DW going bankrupt

I cant wait for the inevitable review of the WFC and FoC and Devastation games.

I personally loved the armada era of transformers, i grew up with it and i did manage to play the game version of this part of transformers. It was a great game. Personally loved the ragdoll physics

Ever since I played Gundam Battle Operation 2 (and actually learned how to play well), I became a big fan of heavy-feeling robot shooters. I wish we had a new game that felt a bit like that, but with vehicle modes in case someone wants to do stuff much quicker

Never watched Armada when I was a kid. I was introduced to Transformers through Cybertron. So it was really confusing when I learned that both Armada and Energon were part of a trilogy, yet they having completely different looks.

@@harlannguyen4048 well other than the usual hell damn and bastqrds removed, some characters personalities and genders are changed, but in the final fight if armada there is transformer gore as Megatron rips his canon off to beat Optimus with it

For me personally, both as a kid and even now, the ragdoll physics are one of the more entertaining parts of this game for me. I remember there was this specific mini-con in the 1st level hidden in a cave I often used to make my character bounce around. That was pretty much all I’d do after getting it. It was too much fun for me to bother with much else. I adore ragdoll physics in any game.

What makes red alert and cylconus being voiced by Timmy turners dad is that he also voiced knockout. So it’s nice to know he had a place in the franchise before prime! XD

Gotta be honest, this may be one of my fastest subscriptions yet having only started watching you within the last 12 hours. You make great and entertaining content and hey, you're a Mega Man fan and I love me a good Mega Man. Keep up the good work cause you got the touch.

This game was one of the first games I ever played and I have so many fond memories of it. I desperately want a remaster or remake of this game.

Very cool video. I've got a lot of memories with this game. I first played it as a demo at my local GameStop. It wasn't enough to convince me to buy it at full price; but a few months later I picked it up when it had dropped. It was also really interesting to see someone else's tactics when playing the game. You definitely did things differently than me. Not better or worse, just different. I loved the sniper rifle for the bigger levels. That, in combination with the infrared vision, made picking off Decepticlones less hazardous. I also very rarely ever used the shield ability. Instead, I fell in love with the minicons who gave you the dodge ability. Once I got that, it pretty much never left my ability slots. Once I'd beaten the main game, I just had a blast trying out new combinations of abilities and especially weapons. Some were completely impractical; but stupid fun. Like the tractor beam, or tornado gun.

Using the sniper rifle + the invisibility minicon was *really* good for trolling , also i agree with you with the tornado gun and tractor beam , was so fun to see the guy with the sword fly when hit by the tornado lol

Many people here in India were introduced to Transformers through Unicorn trilogy on CN. I used to crave for the toys so so much.

The amount of Sonic and Metal Gear references here give me life.

i do remember owning this game. looking back, it kinda felt like a metroidvania with the minicon collecting. having to advance in story, get a certain minicon ability (i remember a glider), and going back to a previous map to collect more. i only got as far as the Tidal Wave transformation, then gave up since i couldn't do anything else after that, and no guides were available to my knowledge

This is a game I still periodically play every now and again, it's definitely one of my top 10. I remember you could play a demo of this game by using a cheat code in Driv3r

Still love that Red Alert in this is not only Timmy's dad but also the sexiest Transformer around, Knockout from TfP!

This game was amazing, I found it randomly on a Sears by the time the PS3 was out for dirt cheap and I got perma stuck on Tidal Wave as I just couldn't damage him at all(hadn't found the sniper Minicon) and it stayed that way for YEARS, it wasn't until Thew Addams played this 3 years ago that I decided to finally settle the score and maaaan, I was missing out on such a great game overall. The ragdol in this game is just *chef's kiss*

The jet Transformers are the real protagonists. They're even in the intro, they're "robots in the sky". I'm so sorry, I will leave now.

It were originally call in Japan (“even it is extremely late”) Transformers: Legends of the Microns, Transformers: Superlink and Transformers: Galaxy Force Also there is a director cut version (PS2: PAL - UK Only) the only difference is a bonus DVD feature ‘making of documentary’

People can say what they want about this one but I really like the designs from this series.

31:27-31:56 made me laugh my ass off, Optimus Prime getting beaten up by Megatron in the most hilarious ways, I died laughing.

Boost minions work in vehicle mode and wing cap. Boosting lets you kill mid tiers with rams much easier and is a decent option for instant speed if you get cornered with bullets. Helps cheese platforming sections with wing cap since you can boost off a jump and pull up immediately during a glide at ground level.

This show has the ABSOLUTE best Starscream. I love him so fucking much And I wish we could get more Super Mode Optimus. It would've made a lot of sense during NuRID if his trailer was an upgrade, rather than forcing him into being Shins McGee

The tractor beam minicon was always my favorite. Not super useful but fun AF. Especially when you're high up in Alaska and there's a sword guy. Just fling him off the cliff

Armada was my real introduction to the series, loved it Learning how every other Starscream is portrayed was... pretty heartbreaking ngl The show really struggled until his Zuko-esque character arc kicked in

Whatever you feel about the cartoon, this game is so good. It stands on its own. The first time I beat the ship level, only to have the ship Transform into Tidal Wave as you exit it was cool as hell. And his size. I think he was the biggest boss I’d ever seen in a video game at the time. Hot Shot is NOT Bumblebee. He is literally Hot Rod. Why he’s yellow is any one’s guess. But his name in Micron Densetsu IS Hot Rod. Which is odd, cause none of the other Hot Shots in the Unicron Trilogy were named Hot Rod in Super Link or Galaxy Force. He’s Hot Shot in the former and Exilian in the latter. I’m not sure why. We’ll probably never know.

Don't worry Trav, you can freely talk about any movie show, movie that you want, we'll still love it.

Hold-up. There was supposed to be a tie-in game for Transformers Cybertron?!?! We were ROBBED! That could've been so good!

Finally I'm told the one transformers game I remember playing as a tiny 5 year old.

Finally I've been waiting on another Transformers video. Can't wait for the rest!!!

I still own a copy of this game. I actually enjoyed it. The vehicle modes were almost useless for most of the game but I liked how you could mix and match the mini-cons to favor whatever level you were on and if you collected a set you could get a stat bonus. Over all, it's probably my 4th or 5th favorite TF game. TF: Devastation is my all-time favorite, with the War and Fall of Cybertron being my #2 and #3.

Only in the US was Hot Shot intended to be Bumblebee. In Japan, it was intended to be Hot Rod, even called that in their dub, but the American dubbers changed it for whatever reason. They even slipped a couple times and called him Hot Rod. After all, he was leader while Optimus was gone for a while and Optimus even tried to give him the Matrix of Leadership.

Daran Norris may have been red alert here, but it's funny to think he would go on to be one of if not my favorite character in all of transformers prime and help pave a way for diverse characters!

There is one thing I have to give the games credit for over the show and comics. One thing that always bugs me is how the Mini-Cons are treated as power boosters or activating the bigger figure's secret weapons. When connected these Mini-Cons are in vehicle mode, some of which have guns, could work as armor even in just a melee capacity (not counting the ones that combine into a shield), or even have modes that work as bonus tools. However, the game comes the closest to using these weapon boosts, though it's not quite the same as you'd get playing with the toys.

I'm a 27 y.o. italian guy and I grow up with both Transformers R.i.D. from 2001 and Transformers Unicron Trilogy, and I've also played the Armada inspirated game and the BayVerse Transformers the Movie and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen games, and I have to admit that Armada Megatron is the most badass and menaching looking Megatron of all times! He's the true incarnation of the Lord of Death for me!

There is a glitch in the Amazon level if you fly off the mountain top and have the speed minicon that works in flight and go to the right corner of the map. You'll fly right through the mountain into a void and eventually fall to your death

You didn't have to go this hard with jokes, goddamn. The Nostoglia Critic one already floored me but "did you know entering and leaving Megatron's Base" is still leaving me laughing. I was already pretty interested in this game (most of the pre High Moon games honestly) but felt its been way too long to watch Armada on the side. Glad to see it literally doesn't matter.

This game was a lot of my childhood and I still have it and my ps2 now. I might revisit it eventually.

I remember enjoying what little I saw of the cartoon as a kid, but the game remains in my mind to this day. I loved this game; played it religiously. It was tough, it was atmospheric, and had kept knocking me on my arse until I finally preserved and beat it. Looking back, of course it had its flaws, but it was one heck of an experience. And I'll never forget the music.

I think they should of included Jetfire in this game as a fourth playable character. Maybe they should of have him appear in the Titalwave level where the gameplay will switch to him instead of the glider Minicon upgrade. Then after completing that level, Jetfire will be unlocked and the player can use him to replay any of the previous levels, and collect hard to reach collectables.

I got this game when it came out and loved it. Never cared much for the Unicron trilogy, but this game is slot of fun. Kinda repetitive fun, but not to the point of boredom or irritation. It was challenging and I made it point to get all the minicons because Till all are one. Edit - great video btw :)

This is pretty awesome to see you make a video over this series in the Transformers universe I couldn't recall besides the game. I used to thought Red Alert was Ratchet out of bad memory, I suppose a Mandela affect for me, along with Bumblebee Being in the game.

I actually got the game again to replay after years and this vid popped up, what a great coincidence!

Always loved the designs of Armada

Thank you for the very enjoyable meme-y review of a game that I remember fondly. The nostalgia is nice. My favorite minicon was the sniper one because it did feel strong when you got headshots (a lot easier with that big head mode :-D ).

Regarding the DC Bumblebee lawsuit. It wasn't actually about the character. It was about the naming on the toy package. Mattel violated Hasbro's copyright, when they put the name Bumblebee on the package by itself. The entire thing could have been avoided, had they named it DC's Bumblebee. Hasbro does this sort of naming on toys frequently. That's why you'll occasionally see names like "Autobot Jazz." Hasbro can't use Jazz by itself, but they can use it with some other identifying title in front of it.

Great review trav. Finally, their is more people that remember this game than just me(i'm even gonna talk about this game soon). Anyways, armada always had a place in my heart, despite the dub being pretty poor. This game is honestly my personal favorite tf game of all time. I love what can you do here and the sheer amount of options you have in this game, is something i like alot. But yeah, awesome review trav, definitely my favorite review you've done soo far >:3

While I was introduced to the Transformers franchise through Cybertron (best theme song and you can’t change my mind), Armada is the one I remember the most seeing as I rented it from Blockbuster CONSTANTLY back in the day. The version of Starscream in this canon is arguably the best version of the character to date. Also, I really feel Screamers VA, Micheal Dobson, brought such a tangible redemption to a character that would otherwise remain irredeemable through G1 and Bayformers

Man you should’ve watched more of Transformers Armada than 9 episodes. Once it gets going it REALLY gets going. The last part of the show, titled “the unicron battles” is by far the greatest Transformers has ever gotten. It’s absolutely peak. Revisiting it a few years back totally reignited my love for Transformers. Also, 24:29 he was called mirage in Transformers energon after getting an upgrade. In Armada he is only called Tidalwave in the US. 26:21 I appreciate the Ulchtar reference
