Metroid NES will forever be the game I start up once in a blue moon when I'm bored, play for 30 minutes and then remember why I only play it for 30 minutes before I turn it off and go do something else. Like you said, play Zero Mission instead

If you stick with it for long enough, it gets a lot better. It's just a matter of getting to know the game's ins and outs. Zero Mission suffers from its own flaws, and I personally prefer the original.

1:32 "and it's up to our space hunter Samus Aran, a character the instruction manual can't seem to grasp the pronouns of..." But this was intentional. Samus was originally intended to be a robot or something, but one day, someone on the team said "what if Samus was a woman?", which the whole team loved, so they put it in as a fast completion bonus. It was meant to be a surprise, so to have the manual spoil it by using she/her pronouns would do a disservice to that end. This is why the manual talks about Samus as if they are a legendary figure that they've only heard stories about. It assumes Samus is a guy and even says "Samus' true form is shrouded in mystery", implying nobody has ever seen this person's face. They are just this mysterious lone wolf badass part of an elite troupe of special forces who shows up when the missions are too hard for normal military and fucks some space pirate shit up. So when you beat the game in, what was it, under 5 hours? Samus takes off their helmet and whoa, she's a woman. Not a robot or a man. Of course _now_ everyone knows Samus is a woman, but back then, when NEStroid was the only game in the franchise, it was a secret. If you wanna focus on weird shit in the NEStroid manual, there's plenty, like Ridley being native to Zebes and being mind controlled by MB. Kraid is a 6 foot tall midget dragon with flowing green hair. Mother Brain is the leader of the Space Pirates (and always has been) and they live on Zebes, where Samus has never been before. And all the creatures on zebes are space pirates. Now, almost all of those details have been retconned or erased. Ridley is a high ranking space pirate, a bloodthirsty sadistic bastard who takes pleasure in tormenting Samus and is not native to Zebes at all. Kraid is a towering giant dragon with no hair. MB was the benevolent overseer of Zebes, Samus was raised on Zebes, the space pirates have a habit of taking over planets and then just naming them "homeworld" even though they have dozens of them, and MB joined the pirates willingly and as their leader made them a far more efficient and dangerous force. And of course, the creatures on Zebes are now just typical flora and fauna, while the space pirates have a clear humanoid form and an obsession with self-modification. There's even this weird detail about metroids being able to reproduce by cell division if hit with beta rays, which is apparently still canon.

"When you die, the game starts you off with a third of your health" 30, actually. It's always 30, no matter how many E-tanks you have. Dying to Mother Brain _sucks._ "The morph ball was created because animating crawling was too difficult at the time" Not too difficult. Just took up too much space that they needed for other stuff. When the art director first joined the team, he had actually made very detailed sprite sheets for Samus, but they ended up removing over half of them to save on cart space.

This title is highly disingenuous. You could replace Metroid with Mario, Kirby or any other franchise of that era that are all classic games, but technically lacking compared to future releases in their franchises. They're lacking because he's a child who grew up playing later releases. What he doesn't understand is that these games aren't just forerunners in their individual franchises, but forerunners for their genres. The entire premise of the platformer was still in flux in those years, and would take time to find it's bearings. When you're a kid playing the first Mega Man game or og Mario, you have nothing to make comparison against, therefore it wouldn't be lacking.
As a wise man once said, " I love the kind of woman who can kick my ass."
A very badly aged game that was revolutionary in its time. The gameplay is very clunky and dated, but the game still has a certain atmosphere and a sense of isolation that was recaptured only in Super Metroid (Zero Mission has a different tone) The soundtrack is a treat, too.

I love this game. I can remember as a kid how the map seemed to go on forever. Going back and playing it again as an adult though I was surprised by just how small it actually was. Young me didn't realize how much backtracking and going in circles I was doing. It's still a blast though and I enjoy playing through it again at least once every couple of years.

This video is awesome and has such good quality
2:52 the fact that this is a real password in an Nintendo game is absolutely hilarious.
I started playing through some of the metroid games from your metroid videos. I'm currently playing zero mission and I'm having a lot of fun.
i played the game while drawing my own map and it was so much more fun than if i just looked one up online. there was still some bullshit, like the location of ridleys lair and the high jump boots being hidden behind a random bombable wall with no indication that i only knew to check because i've seen a similar spot in super metroid. as far as i know that was the only mandatory secret, the rest are all just missles or e tanks or the varia suit (which is optional, i didn't even find it in my playthrough), and you don't need them to beat the game but otherwise everything was pretty fun. i still find the 30 hp thing frustrating though, and i'd still probably rather play zero mission, but i had fun.
That Trav Guy @ 2:00 : "I only lasted about 40minutes before whipping it out..." Myself a gentleman: "That's a respectable amount of chill.

Play Zero mission if you haven't before. It's a remake of the first game. Edit : Doesn't appear It's on the Switch unfortunately but there's always emulation. However Metroid Fusion is on the switch and that game is also great.
The heroic bit of the escape music was added in the Western release and not present in the Famicom Disk System original, which is why it was sadly omitted from Zero Mission.

One of the few classics on my dad’s NES, and I played it on a big TV, input lag and all. Was way more fun with a map, and while my dad said I was being cheap, with Metroid I feel the map is the closest analog to the future titles’ maps.
I really do hope that you make a video for A.M.2.R [ Another Metriod 2 Remake ] as it really deserves a place among the other Metroid games despite being a fan game for all the work that went into it.

I'm just gonna say it: Metroid 1 on NES is an all time classic like Super Mario Bros and the Legend Of Zelda. If the only complaints for a game boil down to a skill issue, that's a sign of greatness. Though there is some jank like enemies being able to hurt you during screen transitions and bad placement of said enemies in front of doors.

I don't know, I guess just I'd think that having experience with many of the other games would change how people look at this one but apparently not
Despite the same thing being present for every other Metroid game, NES Metroid is the only game in the franchise that makes me feel truly powerful, and I absolutely adore it for that. Also, gotta love those age old physics and sound effects :)
There's a lot of problems with the first game, that's for sure but it's still kino
Although I can appreciate it for its time, I generally don’t have much interest in the NES era of games, I feel like a lot of them don’t hold up well unless you have nostalgia for them. However, once you get into the SNES era, that’s when they actually become classics that hold up. Super Mario World, and A Link to The Past are still games I can go back and play and have a great time with.
@MrGul
2 жыл бұрын
There are are a bunch of NES games that I consider classics that still hold up. Super Mario Bros. 3, Shadowgate, Mega Man 2, Batman: The Video Game, Tetris, TMNT II: The Arcade Game, Punch-Out!!, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Bucky O'Hare, Tetris, Little Nemo: The Dream Master and Duck Tales, for example. And that's not nostalgia talking either, because I never had an NES as a kid. But, granted, the amount of SNES titles that I consider classics that still hold up far exceeds the NES ones. I do have a shitload of nostalgia for the SNES though, because that's what I grew up with.

Usually the genre eventually gets a new moniker, this one has just been particularly long-lasting. Saying that though, people are trying to popularise "Search Action" I believe, which i'm... mixed on.
Ok I am watching this video about the original Metroid that got recommended to me by KZread and then I get hit with a Vinny reference out of nowhere... AWSOME

I found this series after beating metroid dread. Is Good, Want more.
It's because of the Justin Bailey code I thought Samus' hair was green, and her skin was snow-white. That's kinda how she is in my personal headcanon.
I will be honest Metroid is one of the first if not the very first nes games I’ve played.

I strongly disagree, it tries to apply the game design principles of Super Metroid to an approximation of Metroid NES's map, which it was simply not meant for. The only thing I don't like about this video is the title. It certainly was not lacking in 1986, and even by modern standards, it's not that it lacks conceptually. On paper it's essentially the same game they've been remaking and refining for decades. It's just been outdone many times over. I mean, I agree that it has not aged well, especially compared to Super Metroid which is still one of the best of the best. Don't get me wrong. The video you have here is fair and objective overall.
