Transform Your Tools Instantly! Plasti Dip Revealed
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I can't believe how many tools and tool handles and BLACK, and if you haven't noted, black does not stand out, it tends to blend in with other tools making black-handled tools harder to see. I purchased "Plasti Dip" a thick liquid plastic for specifically coating tool handles and other items like the DRILL PRESS KEY, which does not always get put back on the magnet of the drill press magnet column. I decided coating it RED with a plastic covering would be one way of helping the tool to stand out more and be easier to see, and USE ... but after I coated it, I was so impressed I decided to try other tools with black handles, like my wood router wrenches, the special screwdriver for my Incra Mitre gauge, some of the knobs for my wood jigs and even the handle for the fence on my table saw, WOW, what a difference it makes, all these tools now stand out because they are RED and not black. They are easier to use with better gripping plastic-like coating. So, in this video, we look at how to use Plasti Dip for tool handles to give them an easy-to-see rubber grip.

Squeeze the top of the can to get oblong objects in.
I'm in your camp, I also use a magnet to keep my chuck key on the drill press. Thanks for the video.
Back in the late eighties or early nineties, I used this stuff on some old Elliot Lucas pliers....apart from a slight blackening from having absorbed a little grease and oil they are still in really good condition!

Same here. The dip has held up a lot better than I expected.
Thanks for sharing those tips and the make!
Great video. I been wanting to try this. Now I’ll because of see your results
Thank you for the video! You've inspired me to use this product on some of my tools!
I bought a can of the red stuff years ago and dipped several tools, and I prepped them just like you did. This stuff really holds up. But I didn't think about dipping my jig knobs at all. Great idea! And now I bet I'll see red and yellow tools and knobs all over your videos. 😊
I used yellow shrink tube for electrical on my drill press Chuck key. It’s held up well.
Do just the handle ends of screw drivers Red for slot driver blue for Phillips. these are now easy to spot in the drawers and you always grab the right style of driver.
It's nice to know I'm not the only one that looks for something so long that I forget what I was looking for. It also amazes me how I can loose something when I haven't moved. I swear there is a portal to another dimension in my shop.

That’s called multi-tasking.
I have dipped some hand tools in the past and I found that you can use a clean acid brush to do touch ups. Hard shiny plastic handles I found if I blast it in my media blast cabinet the Plasti-dip grabs the surface much better. Good video
Thanks for showing how the real world works. Gives me hope
I welded my ladder on my motorhome. I painted the finushed ladder with this and it's been a year and it looks awesome and the protection is awesome
I am going to do this with a different color for each tool’s tools. That way I’m not grabbing the Allen wrench for one tool and realizing it’s for the other tool. THANK YOU!
Thanks Colin!
Great video, very informative... Thank you. One tip I would suggest; if you're having trouble having the dip adhere to the shiny plastic, try hitting the plastic (aka HDPE = High Density Polyethylene) with a torch to change the molecular structure of the surface to accept painting or in this case dipping. There are a bunch of youtube videos showing how to paint HDPE kayaks, hard hats etc without the paint or coating coming off easily and most of them recommend the fire treatment. Thanks again!
I applied this many years ago when Plasti-Dip was first introduced. Lasted a fairly good amount of time on the tools. It has peeled on some instances.
i guess you could pour some of it out into a wider container that would allow you to insert tools that are a weird shape. Great video, exactly what i was looking for, as im thinking of dipping some pliers
Dips everything red, now I can’t find my tool again 😂 great video, thanks for sharing

Black can be a shit or a color to spot at times, but I know what you mean, but colored tools are better imo
My wife and I got some of the "Yeti" type cups and couldn't tell them apart. I used some blue tape and a spray form of this in different colors for each of us. They turned out really nice.
For that chuck, could you have squeezed the can to an oval shape?
I've used it but it has a short shelf life after the air hits it. Gotta use the whole can. I tried to seal it up but after a couple weeks it's done.
thanks
Just the other day I was looking at a can of that in my shop that I hadn't opened wondered it would work on my f still clamps that's pad were missing and maybe help hold the pads on
That is a fantastic product. Another great application for it is car painting. There are places that do this, and for much cheaper than a conventional paint job. It is a matte finish, but I think that is a good look. Also doesn't degrade like regular paint and it is cheap enough you can change the color as you like. When you want to change, just peel off the old stuff.

I Sprayed My 1963 F100 with Plasti-dip. Turned out great. Go check out Fonzie @Dipyourcar here on KZread. You will be blown away with the colors they have developed.
I find that Nail polish works surprisingly well to make tools pop out. Although i'm not sure if you should put it on the grip area, it might crack off.

Works good as a low level thread locker too.
Really interesting stuff indeed, Colin! Thanks for the tip! 😃 I searched for it here in Brazil, but all I've found is a spray version. I'm skeptical, but I guess it's worth a try one of those days... 🤔 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

As long as it is genuine Plasti Dip, (in the UK it is marketed as Performix plasti dip) it should work.

@@davidhull2060doesn't the spray get more like a foil.. I mean i know it will cause of the thinner layers but does it get more durable and stick on the object when spraying many coats..? I dont think its worth it cause you won't get as much out of one spraycan.. 🤔🤷🏼♂️
Use model paint, it's fantastic. Also coat the paint when dry in Goop, its Brand name glue that is like liquid rubber. It won't ever come off. Also Goop fixes stuff like clothes and such, fixed a tear in jeans for 3 years no reapplying.
I'd like to see a video on putting wooden handles for these tools, without plastic. Like the good old days, when tools were works of art, and built for lifetimes.

Who puts wood handles on wrenches and pliers?
Hi there. Can you shake the tin before you open it?
Once that cap comes off, I tend to go on a dipping spree.... pencils, Sharpies, the rod to open and close the window blinds...

How long will it last once opened?
El producto está genial , Yo le aplicaría varias manos dos o tres y pienso que no solo para anti resbalante si no también como aislante para herramientas eléctricas. Saludos desde Caracas, Venezuela.

"The product is great. I would apply various coats to it, two or three, I think not only for anti-slip but also as an insulator for electrical tools. Greetings from Caracas, Venezuela."
I'm astonished that there is no magnet on your drillkey. Sorry for my english. I come from good old germany

Agreed, I have a magnet out of an old hard-disk drive on the side of my drill press, it holds the chuck key perfectly which never gets lost.
What do you clean your tools with, before dipping?
When you dip the tool you want to attached to the side of a metal cabinet or another tool. Place a rare earth magnet on the tool then dip it. This way the powerful magnet is embedded under the plastidip.
Has anyone used a fine brush to paint on a tool, like an 18v impact wrench
Can you reseal the can nice job 🇬🇧
Try to use as much of the dip as soon as possible. Once opened, it doesn’t have a very long shelf life; forms a skin an dries out in a few months.
Hi Colin, how long will the can last when opened? (self hardening) 😉😉👍👍
nooice!
Can you paint product? Want to use on my f style clamps. Have a few and i know the level of liquid will not last.
I feel like good quality spray paint would work just as well
How wide is the opening of the can?
How do you store it once opened and how long will an open can last while being stored?
@hellagrant

I was wondering the same thing as that can looks huge and I imagine most people won't go through all that quick. I think I am going to buy one, open it and pour half into some type of container. That the original container throw in a plastic bag and wrap it tight.
How long will the dip stay liquid I worry it will dry up after some weeks and waste so much product
Shake before opening?
Oh reflective tape can be cut into all shapes and dimensions…even a hole punch ( use for smaller items..). Single stripe, double or triple stripes …triangles..unlimited
Would this work dipping the feet of outdoor furniture?

@WordWorkWeb If only I couldn't read, scammer!
Has anyone tried this dip to reduce the ID or increase the OD of loose vacuum hose fittings? It would require a shallower and larger diameter container like a tuna can.

This seems like a great idea!
I have dipped many tools but also as a drummer I have dipped the butt emd of drum sticks for better grip.
Had no idea they still make this. Thought it was a gimmick from the 80’s. Remember Dad dipping pliers in that. Good memory. :)
Recently purchased Plastidip in a spray can. Have to do things in layers. Even when spraying it outside _WEAR A MASK._ (gasp)
I believe you can make your own dip by using silicone caulk (must be pure silicone, not acrylic or other) and mix in acetone... also, if you make it VERY "watery", it can also waterproof fabrics etc.... 😎👍☘🍺
visit the world of making fishing lures and how to coat them, you might like that better, lots of color choices
Seems very messy for what it does, expensive too. Looked good on pliers though. Seems to work best on simple shapes. Thank you.
O boy plastic dip haven't see it in a long time ,,it lasts along time if you clean and prep your area good first,,we used to use it for car rims, tools, pad locks, keys,1001 ideas, the bad part about it is a lot go's to waste if you dont use it asap it drys up in the can ,,,,
Be careful of hormone disruption when using plastic chemicals especially BPA
Use the plastic dip up, once the can is open it doesn’t last long.
I've had good luck "painting" the material on larger items. Go slowly!
Problem: everything is black and blends in with other stuff. Solution: paint everything red so it sticks out Problem: everything is red and blends in with other stuff.
If only the can would last longer than 2 weeks
Actually, you don’t have to dip things in a can and follow literally the instructions, the brush will do the same job.
An inch ever five seconds for best result
