Palm down is still the hardest part for me because I'm focused on pushing off with my back leg I forget to relax my wrist. 😊

Great video! If you have a tight serving shoulder, are there any exercises to get to the racquet drop?

That would probably be a question for a physical therapist. But for some exercises check out this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4mblrejh8KwfJc.htmlsi=GUhYlhsQwqQvaErH

This is so helpful, Meike. What is frustrating is that I have the correct grip but somehow end up with the waiter's tray midway through the serve. I will try these exercises. One question: does it help to have a toss lag? Instead of tossing the ball at the same time as getting into the trophy position, does it help to separate out the two actions so one can concentrate on leading with the edge?

You can separate them to work on each part in an isolated way. Later on, I would try to get them in sync again.

One thing I’d check is to look at your grip on the serve immediately after hitting the serve. Once I happen to be at the same courts that a female cousin was taking group tennis lessons at. After her lesson was over she excitedly came up to me and said she had learned to serve with a Continental grip. I didn’t say it but I was skeptical since I knew she had a classic Waiter’s Tray serve, forehand grip and all. Also the change can’t be done immediately without working at it. She wanted to demonstrate her new Continental grip serve. She showed me her Continental grip and it was held correctly. Then something happened during the serve that I frankly didn’t think she had the athleticism to pull off. On the take back she actually shifted the grip from Continental to her regular semi western forehand grip in one smooth motion without even touching the racket with her left hand. After that the rest of the serve was classic Waiters Tray. She was totally unaware that she was doing this. She’s very competitive. I think her subconscious was so driven to get the serve in that it took control of her hand and did what it had to (switch back to her regular grip) to insure that the serve went in. I later saw this phenomenon displayed by a few others. It’s actually quite difficult to hit a classic Waiter’s Tray serve while holding a true Continental grip. You have to have a extraordinary range of motion in the wrist. Plus you have to have your wrist flexed fully extended through most of the movement. And you’d have to pronate your hand very early. It be the farthest thing from a relaxed arm and hand that I could imagine. If it doesn’t feel totally uncomfortable at first your probably reverting. If the ball goes in the service box at the start your probably reverting in some way. Remember it’s one step back ten steps forward when getting rid of Waiters Tray serve. Good luck

@@Dasato123 thanks for that. I don’t think my grip changes through the serve. You’d be surprised how much your strings can open up and point upward if you open up your shoulder. I think it has more to do with rotation of the shoulder and making sure I’m dropping my racket properly. Often the racket doesn’t end up in a full relaxed drop, which then helps form a waiters tray
