I play with a guy who all he does is slice, especially on his backhand. He’s also a pusher. I try to push him back by hitting with a lot of depth, but sometimes when I come to the net, he will just go for a lob. It’s so annoying. I usually win if I cut my errors but that backspin in the racquet you demonstrated is a great point for why sometimes I hit easy balls into the net when I play him.

I like the way you mentioned hitting a slice to neutralize a slice and wait for an opportunity. So many players are not confident enough to hit multiple shots in a rally so they try to over hitting. Being an older clay court player I love playing these guys. When I coach I tell my players to find what their opponents don’t like and feed them a couple of hundred. Every shot should have a purpose like to defend and stay in a point, attack to close a point or neutral to prolong and wait for a better opportunity. Every shot should be placed to fit its purpose. Every shot should have a particular spin to help accomplish your purpose and placement. Personally I love to use a slice like a boxer uses a jab then hit a flatter drive for the knock out punch. I use top spin for defense ( passing shots), creating angles to open court to attack or just a change up to throw off the opponents timing. Never let then get to comfortable and don’t be predictable.

Thank you for the content near the end for handling a hard slice shot at net. I've had many of my normal volleys dump into the net due to slice underspin, but I'll try pushing forward as you recommend. As you also point out, I first need to recognize my opponent intends to hit a slice in order to make my volley adjustment. Keep up your good work!

I've been taking classes/lessons for a while now. But we have never been teached how to do slice yet. So I've tried learning it on my own, and I find I have the backhand slice at an ok level, forehand slice not at all. However, my bh slice is very much the "hacky/floaty" slice where I probably hit it way too hard. The ball flies high up with a lot of spin, and I think I need to work on getting it more like the sticky slice. Great video!

When I'm at the net and ready to volley, the opponent hits a hard slice, and the ball seems to *zig-zag!* left right in the air and I end up framing the volley. This framing of the volleyhappens even though I *KNOW* a slice is coming (that is all he does).☹ Am I just imagining this zig-zag movement? I guess the fix is to watch the ball closer but I am already trying to do that.

Thanks Coach Meike! I wish I could get my backhand slice to be like the sliced backhands of the 70's Pro players, more of a drive slice I guess, not the fault of any Coach or lesson I've had, I'm going to blame it on modern racquet and string technology! 😉😊

My slice is a mixture of under-spin and side spin (the opposite to a kick serve) this makes the ball curve a little and skid, making a low bounce. (Would say it's about 80% under-spin 20% side-spin). My son hits this shot so well sometimes, I scrape my racket getting it back.

Yes, same thing. The only difference would be that if they also sideswipe it a bit that ball will bounce to your left a bit

My #1 girls HS player was getting beat badly by a slicer on a fast, low bouncing court. My #1 had a strong grip and was struggling with the low balls. I told her to hit all high topspin shots to see if her opponent could slice against balls over her shoulder. My #1 took it to an extreme, even hitting high topspin on short ball approach shots. She ended up winning fairly easily. That was probably the only time I had an effect on a match due to tactics as I normally only tried to find ways to relax my players during matches.

Correction. When the ball is hit with a slice the ball will have underspin in the air. However, when the ball hits the ground the momentum of the ball will change the underspin to overspin so you can still hit it with a normal shot. The only thing that will change is the speed and lower trajectory which you have to adapt to.

2:54 I would like to do sticky slice only, which is verty safety and can stay a fast ball after the bounce - 8:40 this is what I hope from my opponent when I slice, but it often leads to a slice battle. Whithin the warmup I test the opponent's volley hability with nasty slices just above the net.

  • @ivanov_bulgaria

To override the spin?! The spin is the same when you hit a top spin of a ball sliced at you! If you hit a sliced ball flat, it will not fly high in the air! Exactly the opposite - it will go low!
