    Great tutorial! I am doing one now, and it is harder than it looks! I have places I rubbed the ink off and I am thinking of filling in with paint. I think this is a slow and steady process and as you stated, it takes a number of rounds to get the paper off. Thanks for the tips!

  • @CraftingWhileCaffeinated

    I use photoshop elements and use the rectangular marquee tool to select the right size and move it to a new layer and know I have cropped all of the image. You could also just crop the photo four different 8x10s and piece them back together after they’re printed. I hope that helps

    Hello. I have a canvas that has a coat of oil paint already on it. I would like to use your process exactly as you do it in the video. You are placing the inkjet copy paper on clear new canvas. Is it possible to do the process and transfer the image onto the painted canvas? Or, what do I do? Could I apply a coat of the gel and let it dry, and then apply the image as per your video? Thanks

  • @CraftingWhileCaffeinated

    @CraftingWhileCaffeinated

    3 жыл бұрын

    I’m not sure, honestly. If the oil paint is white, I would go ahead and just try to apply the photo just as I do in the video. If it is a colorful layer, I would try to cover the paint with a coat of white gesso or paint so you have a nice background and no color will peek through. Then just go ahead and follow the steps!

    Unless you are using the Photo Tranfer Mod Podge, I don’t think Mod Podge will work. And I’ve only ever used the Gel Medium for this, so that would be my recommendation. And the gel medium can be bought in gloss or matte finish, both will work, its just your preference for which you use. And also, you have to use a laser/toner printed image. That means an image that has been put to the paper with toner. An inkjet image won’t work. I’ve only done black and white toner images, but as long it’s toner printed color should work just as well! I hope that helps you work out some of the issues!!

  • @CraftingWhileCaffeinated

    @CraftingWhileCaffeinated

    Жыл бұрын

    They do not have to be black and white. You can absolutely use color photos! The only thing you to make sure of is that they are printed with a laser printer or copied with toner. The toner is what is sticking to the gel medium. A laser printed image won’t work. The ink, since it’s water based, will just smear. I hope that helps!

    Hi have a couple of questions so the photo needs to on regular paper and not photo paper? And can you explain the mirror image and how it is exactly done. Sorry if these are crazy questions new to this and would like to do as a gift.

  • @CraftingWhileCaffeinated

    @CraftingWhileCaffeinated

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not crazy questions at all! The photo needs to be printed onto regular printer/copy paper. Photo paper is too thick and doesn’t dissolve away once you add the water. Also, you HAVE to use a laser printer or copier. The toner is the key to making this work. An ink jet printed image won’t work. And the mirror image is essentially flipping to photo to create a mirror image. If the photo is in your phone (iPhone) all you need to do is click edit, then in the crop portion of the editing click the button in the top left corner. It’s essentially flipping the image horizontally and creating a mirror, so when you flip the image face down onto your canvas it will end up being the correct orientation when it transfers. This is especially important if you have any text in the image. I hope that helps and if you have anymore questions, let me know!! And I’ve made these for gifts several times and they’re always loved!!

    As long as you print from a LASER printer, color or black and white, it should work but it will retain the color! I recently purchased a color laser printer and can't wait to try this with color prints! And Mod Podge has its own photo transfer medium, regular mod podge won't work. I've never tried the Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium, but I do know the Gel Medium works wonderfully. And finally, the photos MUST be printed onto computer paper. Regular photo paper is too thick and won't disintegrate like you need it to for this technique! I hope that helps!!

    I don’t have a great answer to your question unfortunately. The only thing about using mod podge vs an artist grade gel medium would be the yellowing over time. I’m not sure if Mod Podge would hold up over time, especially if you live in a humid environment, if sunlight will be hitting your photos, etc. Also, once the gel medium is set it’s waterproof, so adding that water doesn’t hurt it. However I’m pretty sure Mod Podge is water soluble, so I’m not sure it would be the best option.

    Yes and no. A copier that uses toner would work too, but overall just remember to use a machine that uses toner. That is what is going to adhere to the medium and transfer. If you don’t have anything that prints with toner, take the picture or printout to your local library. All libraries close to me do copying and printing for as little as .10 a page!

    Not regular mod podge. It doesn’t ever fully dry enough and because it is water based it will rewet when the water is applied. There is a mod podge that is specifically designed for this but I’ve never tried it myself so can’t say whether it works well or not.

  • @CraftingWhileCaffeinated

    No, gesso won’t work for this. Gel medium is more of a “glue” that isn’t water soluble and will keep the toner in place while you apply water to remove the paper. Gesso is more of a thin paint and has no holding power.

    Did you use a laser printed image?? It has to be an image that is printed or copied with toner. An inkjet image won’t work. I’ve used Liquitex Gel Medium and it works great! So either the image isn’t toner printed OR you’re rubbing too hard to remove the paper. Use more water and a very light touch. Let it dry in between rubbings so you only rub enough to remove the paper and not the image. Also, when you put the image into the wet gel medium be sure to use a THICK layer of gel medium and there are no air bubbles you want to be sure to smooth the paper into the medium. I then let mine dry overnight. As long as the medium is dry, you should be good to go! I hope that helps!

    Just regular printer paper. Nothing special. If your results aren’t clean, you can try laying down a thicker coat of the gel medium. It really does need to be quite thick. And if the problem is that the image looks hazy, you need to continue to rub off the excess paper. It can seem while you’re rubbing and the paper is wet that all of it is off. But let it partially dry and if a haziness appears continue to rub with your fingers and that final layer of paper will come off! I hope that helps!
