Transcontinental Race 2022 :: Race Start to Krupa Checkpoint 1

Спорт

Start line of the Transcontinental Race 2022, held in Geraardsbergen, Belgium. The race began on 24th July 2022 at 10pm. Look at the bikes of the transcontinental and the proceedings in the market square of the host city.
The Transcontinental Race is the definitive self-supported bicycle race across Europe.
From the cobbles of Flanders, to the shores of the Black Sea; via rock hewn tunnels, bald mountain tops, navigating pristine asphalt and rock strewn tracks, the Transcontinental will once again cross the European continent in its own unique style: Rider against rider, living by their wits alone, without caravan or entourage; guided by personal integrity, mutual respect and a collective commitment to equality.
At the sharp end the Transcontinental is a beautifully hard bicycle race, simple in design but complex in execution: Factors of self-reliance, logistics, navigation and judgement burden racers’ minds as well as their physiques. The strongest excel and redefine what we think possible, while many experienced riders target only a finish.
It’s no coincidence that the most prepared will succeed.
In this video I have captured the atmosphere of the start line, from the cobbled streets, the historic architecture and the rest begins the lighting of the torches and the ascent up the Muur.
Historically the Muur-Kapelmuur famously featured as the penultimate and decisive climb of the Tour of Flanders or De Ronde. The steep, cobbled ascent shaping many memorable races, creating many ‘Flahute’ legends and thrilling generations of cycling fans. The relatively short climb has an average and maximum incline of 9% and 20% respectively, the cobblestones delivering a variety of challenges depending on the time of year and weather conditions. The climb is synonymous with the ‘hard men’ of the past and their exploits over difficult terrain, long distances and the infamous Flandrian mud.

11:53 thats the tough part.. finding something nutritious. No chance to pick up a couple of maltloves and a tub of isostar.. A bottle of milk and a packet sandwich and you're running on empty.. well done for two weeks of eating junk ( I mean that in the nicest way), really shows what the race is all about.

Looked epis so far. Interesting what you say about the roads and the drivers - usually assume they are more considerate in Europe. Have you seen Mikko Mäkipää route-making video?

Yeah I watched it thanks, very interesting how he followed the river beds. I never realised UK drivers gave so much space when over-taking cyclists or at least thats my experience after 3 days of commuting to and from work on a not-so busy A road for a short chunk of time. As the days went by I got a little more used to it, the further East I got the shitter the driving became; drivers probably never seen a bicycle ridden on a main road before. Seems to be normal in some countries to honk someone from a good distance to warn you of their presence - that was a little reassuring. On the flip-side, plenty of drivers hooting you out the way and onto the white line/gutter.
