Richard Lake Bikepacking Adventures
Richard Lake Bikepacking Adventures
Welcome to the channel, I am an ultra distance cyclist and mountain goat!
In 2022 I rode in the prestigious Transcontinental Race during the Summer, an epic bikepacking race over 4,000km across Europe, and earlier in the season finished the 2,000km bikepacking race; The Race Around the Netherlands.
During 2021 I completed my first ever Everesting Challenge, in my home county of Lincolnshire, UK. The same hill over 100+ times!
In 2019 I completed the cycling event Paris-Brest-Paris in France. In 2020 I finished a very personal LEJOG adventure, later in the year I went off road and took on the Transpennine Trail amongst many other exciting adventures on two wheels.
My channel is focussed on long distance cycling events; in 2020/2021 I've discover wild camping and slept in many wild and not so wild locations like the Peak District, Brecon Beacons, the Lake District and closer to home.

It's great to see these rides through my local area. Regardless of the weather 😂
Great video Richard. It was nice to meet you and ride along the waterway to Boston chatting with you!
Wow. What a bike ride we'll done Richard.
Get some decent gloves Richard
Really enjoy your no bull videos Richard. Many thanks!
Well done Rich👍
You're smashing the km's Richard. Beast mode..👍👍
Mike Wigley's routes are really good. This is one of my favourite 600s
Despite the main stretches of road it always felt like we/I hit them at the right time - at their quietest - and on mostly wide open roads. It always felt like I was making good progress and distance as a result. The return from Corby Glen I enjoyed a lot too as I didn't know where I was going and again nice roads!
Enjoined the film very good. What do you use for a mic, or is it just the go pro. Sounds well.
Hey great thanks glad you enjoyed it. The camera is the DJI Action 4, it's just one of those foam wind covers, they do wonders for reducing wind noise.
😃
Hey thanks Peter 😊
That downpour obviously heard you talking Nice to see you on your return to Poynton 👍
Thanks
I rode the Rebellion Way in June, staying at campsites. Lovely route, but it was a bit muddier and a lot more puddles than when you did it 😂 Only bit I didn't like was the bit through the National land outside Wells. Steep climb on single track through a muddy wood. Not my thing. Thanks for sharing the video. Really enjoyed it.
That doesn't ring a bell. Was that through Holkham itself? I don't recall any mud, steep or off road stuff around those parts.
@@BikepackingAdventures it was Beeston Regis Heath
What to do when you have pain in your wrist while wriding? I have a flat bar and my wrists are hurting at +10km. The saddle is in good place, good height. I don't know :(
For me on flat bars I tend to get numbness rather than actual pain. I have recently bought inner bar ends from Sq Labs. Still in the box atm so can't say whether or not they have helped, but have a look at a few videos. It'll give you another position on the bike that might help. Apart from that maybe you need to adjust the angle of your brake levers? Just a thought.
@@BikepackingAdventures I'll give it a try, thanks
clean your bike
Yes sir 😅
Hi Richard, Great Video and you're right, the King Alfred Way is tough! I did it solo in May this year and although a beautiful route in many places but it relies totally on the weather.
I was very fortunate with the weather. I enjoyed the KAW - will do again!
Camping footage at the beginning was a nice bonus.
Thanks 👍 I'll try and do some more!
Missed it this year but "that climb" if it was Tetford you mentioned, was in it last year. Nice Audax and my first
Yeah it was Tetford =)
Bless hate it when something like that happens. Good video tho.
Thanks for watching =)
well done Richard
Cheers
Another great video Richard the trails looked amazing and is definitely one on my radar now will have to be gravel bike though as don’t own a mb yet! Thanks
Ughh don't like coffee 🤢🤢 I'm tea drinker semi skimmed milk taa 2sugars😂😂
Forgot to release this video earlier this year - hope you enjoy!"
Great adventure there Richard and well done doing it of the back of APN 💪
Nice view of the mixture of terrain. I don't think I've got the legs for 140km in one day, let alone a full on weekend. Maybe one day.
How are you finding the bike Richard? I am facing a first world dilemma where I could get an epic to replace my procaliber. But l'm not 100% sure as I do love my trek. A little extra comfort, especially downhill would be good. At the same time I don't want to sacrifice the speed of the trek on the road/flats.
What size tyres do you have on that bike?
Richard - if you've got the 46/30 Absolute Black (which is the lowest - their other subcompact is 48/32), that's quite a drop from the standard 50/34 Ultegra. So, did you have any problems lowering the front mech sufficiently and setting it up ok? And do you get reliable shifting at the front? Cheers.
Great video Richard and that route is now on my list. Regarding your rain jacket in the bottom of the bag, I bet like me you forget there is a zip in the side of the Tailfin to get in quickly to the bottom 🤣 Quick question regarding parking up and leaving your van for three days, do you not worry about it at all?
I always forget about the zip pocket Paul yes, however I also stuck inside the dry bag lol As for the van, initially yes, but once I start moving I forget about it quickly.
I'm thinking about doing the exact same route you did and will most likely park at the same spot. I hope my car will be safe, if not, I'll blame you 😜🤣
I'm looking on Google maps and can't see any parking areas near where you started/finished on Strava 🤔
@@Themarspd www.google.com/maps/@52.7424795,0.4805118,3a,75y,221.67h,88.75t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sNYycQDGjzyci6aBy1sxpFA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en-GB&coh=205409&entry=ttu - if link doesn't work - on google map there's parking to the North of Holthouse Lane on the left-bend - space for 4/5 vehicles. Rebellion Way is on the left.
Thanks Richard, although that doesn't look like a good place to leave a car for two nights 🤔
Fantastic video Richard. The views were brilliant. Some history round that way.
Thanks 👍
Excellent, I've got this on my to do list. Thanks for sharing!
Good video sir. Some parts of the route look like tracks I end up on when I take a wrong turn😊. What phone navigation app were you using?
I use RideWithGPS paired with Garmin 540 solar. Sometimes I'll create places of interest along the route and use voice navigation as a backup. This time I just downloaded the route from cycling uk and went.
You could have won a speedboat! 🤣
why does this make me think of a gameshow?
Great route Richard thanks for sharing Top man
Glad you enjoyed it, it was certainly an enjoyable place to ride. Quiet.
Love Norfolk, some great gravel there as well compared to our Lincolnshire bridleways..
Loved it!
Theres nothing on that bike, mines always packed to the hilt. Weighs a ton.
I prefer to leave the creature comforts at home in Summer. Other times of year I'll carry another dry bag stuffed with tent and pegs underneath the top tube. Lucky it stayed dry and relatively mild.
Thank you Richard
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brought back some great memories of when I rode this in May this year, starting from Thetford. Looks like you had some much better weather than me; luckily I'd opted for hotels, don't like to even think about wild camping in heavy rain
If there's a hint of rain the tent would be coming along with me! Wild camping in the rain = sleeping in a bus shelter which isn't so luxurious assuming you find one when the heavens open!
Great content Richard love watching your adventures , keep adventuring
Thanks for watching. ❤️
Really enjoyed this video.👍
Thanks Jez! Nice laid back adventure than of late.
Good video
Wife and I bikepacked this last summer, mostly good weather, loved it. Thanks for posting. 👌
What route did you ride? It's such an amazing feeling, I've had 2 bikepacking journeys now. The pedders way, & the north downs way.
Glad you enjoyed it! Weather always plays a massive part in out adventures outdoors.
Richard you need to get a Woman in you your life to organise you. Or would that cause any complications. Aside from that a great entertaining vlog. Ps the first comments come from my wife. But as the politicians say I couldn't possibly comment. Regards from someone who has to listen to their wife when they are in earshot Regards Bob.
Lmao very good 👍
The Devils highway actually exists. New Jersey USA has a 1/8 mile stretch designated Rte 666. The legend of the Jersey Devil lives. However, I've been everywhere it should have been!
UK "gravel" eh! I wonder though, do you think there is anywhere else in the world where you an ride thousand year old 'traditional' rights of way, long defunct drovers roads and byways, old canal towpaths, recently abandoned rail routes, and just occasionally that real 'true' hero gravel? Heck, even our roads offer a certain 'off' road feel! Lucky us! 🙃
Did you drop the garmin
At some point before I went to the Canaries in April the top of the outer casing began to loosen - visually it looked fine but heard shaking. So whilst I was over there I used a zip tie to hold it firm. It never rained there - as soon as I got back to the UK and got caught out by the rain - some water had seeped through.
The only bike I use these days is a ALT bike 29 x 2.25 with a pinion belt drive .Yes they are more expensive but then you only need one bike .I find it covers everything & very little maintenance.
I found the Wahoo roam 2 is way more robust ,but I only need it for navigation.
