    I have enjoyed watching some of the CGI episodes that mainly involve him and an engine going through a so-called growing pain. “Henry Takes the Express” “Pouty James” “Who’s Geoffrey” etc. You see a lot of that father/son(s) dynamic and it’s freaking pure.

    I love how Gordon thinks he's all amazing and a bag of chips, but if he actually was transferred and worked on a different railway with the 'big boys' he'd be ripped a new one. First; he's a prototype to his class, unlike his siblings he's meant to have flaws so they can be changed in the final product, if a mainland engine knew this about Gordon he'd be a laughing stock considering how successful his siblings were. Second; I'd think express engines on the mainland would have their own cast system depending on who pulled the longer or more challenging express train, so for example a train from London to Scotland would be the highest honor while a shorter one wouldn't. On top of Gordon being a prototype, he wouldn't even be able to brag about pulling the express because it's only 87 miles long, he'd be laughed out of any yard and would be bullied relentlessly. Gordon doesn't realize how good he has it on Sodor, a small new railway that doesn't know his origins, and by the time the railway probably really takes off he's old enough to have an unchallengeable reputation. If Gordon were to be put anywhere else he'd be a failer, but because he's on Sodor he excels! And that's the best out come for him.

    "unlike his siblings he's meant to have flaws so they can be changed in the final product" Other way around. Prototypes aren't _meant_ to have flaws, they're meant to _find_ any flaws or oversights in the design. It's rare, but you can have a prototype that works perfectly as intended and goes straight to production with just a few quality-of-life measures added.

Gordon enjoying shunting, but the moment he says, “We need another tank engine.” is like the equivalent for a person snapping back to reality and stating, “what am I doing? 1:56 - "A'ight, listen here, you little-" 9:40 - _"Oh, crap, he's taken the whistle"_ Okay, silly comments aside, I wanna recognize a few things: 1) Edward seems to be such a good influence on anyone he takes under his wing. First Thomas, and now James - their self-important attitude really seems to calm down after so closely observing Edward's experience and work ethic, not to mention how Edward picks the right moments to congratulate them for genuinely good work, thus reinforcing a better attitude from them. 2) Love the raised stakes of the Railroad Board coming to visit. As I write this, I haven't finished the episode, but I can already see how Gordon's mishap and James stepping up to fix things will have such a large impact on James' reputation and redemption arc. 3) Gordon's getting more and more pushy about the whole "tender engines don't shunt" thing, and it's starting to feel like a slow burn building up to the inevitable explosion that will be his strike. 4) Henry being such a straight man who takes no sides is great. Like, he'll laugh with Gordon and tease James - because it is genuinely funny, and who doesn't like a good laugh? - but the very next day he'll be making a subtle callout on Gordon for thinking WAY too highly of himself

    I especially like how you gave a logical reason for why Gordon couldn’t take the train. In the books, it kind of made sense since he entered the platform towards the buffers, but even then you think he would be able to go to a turntable to switch directions. So having it be that the railway board just doesn’t trust him anymore (even if the situation was out of Gordon’s control) makes more sense. And you can also write off them, not trusting Gordon as nonsensical upper management decisions.

  • @VestedUTuber

    @VestedUTuber

    The fact that the situation was out of Gordon's control yet Gordon still got blamed actually allows for some characterization hooks as well. Keep in mind that Gordon was a Gresley design, and thus originally built for the LNER. It could have been possible that the Railway Board was being bribed by the LMS to try and make Gordon look bad in order to promote the LMS's Stanier- and Fowler- designed engines over the LNER's Gresley-designed units.

  • @VestedUTuber

    @VestedUTuber

    Жыл бұрын

    @@josephthemidland4f152 Because the lanky mogul doesn't have the necessary tractive effort to pull the train in a timely manner without help. Plus, James isn't designed to take a big heavy express train, he's a mixed-traffic engine designed to handle local freight and commuter trains alike at moderate speeds. This doesn't necessarily mean James physically can't pull a express passenger train should the need arise, but it does mean that he's far from the optimal choice and that using him on such a train would result in significant delays.

    I said once before, I think the best thing in Trampys character development is the fact that he takes the Engines' worst qualities and exaggerates them. I love seeing the engines grow and change with each episode. Along with changes in the story you don't expect. Without a doubt, Trampy Movies is my favorite Thomas series because it perfectly captures what made the series so good, yet able to create something brand new and original That is hard to do, and I seriously give him props. A little detail I adore that I haven’t seen anyone else point out is James going “Railway what now?” when Sir Topham brings up the railway board. James being the newest to railways and not knowing what the railway board is a fantastic idea, only carried further by how much everyone else groans when hearing about them. It also is a subtle way of setting up the gag of James saying “Railway men” instead of railway board. If me going into this much depth on a single line isn’t an indication this is another absolutely fantastic Trampy Movie, then I don’t know what is. Amazing job!

It doesn't matter where you go, but we are important, and for Sir Topham Hatt to make us shunt trucks, fetch coaches and go on some of those dirty sidings it's, it's, well, it's not the proper thing. *Thomas* - HAHAHAHA...! *Gordon* - What's so funny? *Thomas* - Isn't it obvious Lazybones? You're finally doing some hard work for a change! *Gordon* - That's not funny! *Thomas* - It's pretty funny! Just like you embarrassed yourself in front of the railway board! *Gordon* - H-How do you know about that? Did James tell you that?! *Thomas* - It was all the stationmaster could talk about! How could you make such a stupid mistake like that? *Gordon* - I pull the express! You of all engines should know how much hard work that is to do! *Thomas* - Really Gordon, you actually believe that? *Gordon* - Of course I do, you were still coupled to my train! _passengers gasp_ *Gordon* - I-I-I mean er... *Thomas* - But I thought you didn't remember doing that? *Gordon* - Well-- I, uh... *Thomas* - Well little Gordon, while you're shunting your own coaches or trucks, remember this: Now you know what hard work means. What I love about this one is how the title reflects how this is not only James' story, but Gordon's as well. Gordon's line of "...pestering one another is only what an engine gets from talking too much who has very little to show" comes back to bite him. He does show compassion and concern towards the others, but it's always been in his pompous, theatrical, and ultimately self-indulgent way, and this is the first time he actually has to eat his words and face the consequences of his actions. And why does all this happen? Because he was doing the exact same thing he was accusing James of doing and James was only "pestering" him in kind. James is the perfect foil for Gordon here and it makes sense given how James is the one who ultimately shows the most growth from this, especially notable in how he admits how he couldn't pull the express all the time and that while he did pester Gordon, James does care about him because they really are a family. This story also helps Gordon take that message to heart by the end from just being empty words he meant to make him look good. I also love how the railway board kind of break the illusion Gordon's had that things will always eventually go his way, because rightfully, he did do nothing wrong and was punished for it. He's starting to learn that the world isn't always a fair place. But he did put his metaphorical foot in his mouth and finally been brought down to earth and that makes his punishment feel more deserved and makes sure we don't forget why he got into this situation to begin with. Finally I just noticed how the board's line "We would like to leave today, Topham" ties into the "Is it tomorrow?" bit and that is actually genius.

Surprised that the loop line stayed when Awdry considered it a great error (I'm now tempted to ask about the Trampyverse's track plans for the NWR). Henry just being so done is a vibe. I get the feeling a certain BIG MAJOR detail with his build is why he isn't fond of them. Can't wait for him to get some real spotlight. But this is James' story right now, as everything comes together for him. Interesting that in this 'verse he immediately realizes that the Express is heavy af, rather than get totally swelled up in the head. "THROW ME OFF THE LINE WHY DON'T YOU" *Looks at Gordon Takes a Tumble. I mean, technically they didn't, the track just gave way.* And the subtle hints reminding us that Percy will soon be here. Can't wait for his official debut!

    Something I really like about this episode is the way the railway board members are portrayed. Usually in media, high up executives are portrayed as greedy and selfish caricatures who don’t care about anybody or anything except themselves and money. But here, it seems to me that the board-men genuinely care about the railway and whether or not it’s running properly. They may be a little harsh with their punishments, but at least they’re dishing them out for a reasonable cause. Props to Trampy and his excellent writing skills.

    You know, I don’t think James and Henry will be very willing to join Gordon in a workers strike after this. James has just been entrusted with the Express, he’s not going to blow that away. And Henry got blocked in a tunnel the last time he disobeyed orders from Sir Topham Hat. I don’t think he’d be willing to risk being boarded up in the shed for something as small as having to do his own shunting. This may be a hill that Gordon dies on alone this time around.

    One of the best Trampy movies yet! I love James’ development and how the fate of the railway is essentially on James’ hands. The father figure STH is portrayed as is really wholesome too. I died at the “perhaps it was instinct!” line. Gordon’s deadpanned face says it all. One of my personal favorites, up there with Rain, Rescue, Trucks, and Runaway! What’s gonna come next?! May I please have permission to react to these on my own channel? I’m also thinking of making an AU of Cows, (the episode) where Gordon actually kills the cow, may I use the audio from your Quickie for that one if I do make it?

    Another great video! First off, glad you took a week off, I would hate to see this series die from burnout. Secondly, great job. I like the way Henry plays both sides, yet is still a little more loyal to Gordon. I like how James is a bit naive, with the Railway "Men" and Gordon's "Transfer." The railway board adds a nice bit of tension, and so does Gordon's transfer. I good way to fill out the story a bit. I like Edward's role as a role model for James, same as he did Thomas. Gordon complaining about shunting is a good bir of foreshadowing, and I like that Sir Topham Hatt is already trying to buy Percy. Also, 7:09

    "Today is an important day, my boys!" This is better than how James was introduced in both the TV series and in the railway series. I remember saying that these videos are better than anything after Season 7. Scratch that. These are up there with, hell probably better than Season 5. (my personal favorite season) Also, Edward telling Gordon and Henry that James lost the back end of the train made me laugh. "It was a very minor detail that didn't need to be mentioned!" "Oh… oops."

    i think ive relistened to this story enough times this story in particular (though every story to some degree) really emphasizes how small james must feel. i mean......hes a tender engine, so he seeks a sense of camraderie with gordon and henry, but both look down on him for being smaller and newer than them (not helping things is that hes not much bigger than edward). they end up saying something that feeds into his inferiority complex and even behind his back talk about him as if hes not really one of them. coupled with the fact that he usually deals in freight despite being mixed traffic leads to needing to prove himself and his place on the railroad somehow. that said, thomas' comments in "trucks" were somewhat of a compliment (henry came first but has inherent mechanical flaws, then gordon came but outright refused to work with freight or shunt, thus james came along) and the fact that thomas has no issues to speak of when talking about james then means for all of how james sees himself, he is both mechanically fit and willing to do the work thats asked regardless of if its his preference, which already puts him above the 2 tender engines. guess what im rambling is this: james is better than gordon and henry overall(definitely better than they think he is) and the only flaws that keep him down is inexperience and his emotional vulnerability, which is how he ends up in the pecking order of the railroad that he is.

  • @streamlinedengine

    @streamlinedengine

    Underrated comment my good man. I love how Thomas’ roast in “Trucks” could be interpreted both ways. On the one hand, he didn’t even say a damn bad thing about James while absolutely destroying Henry and Gordon (as you point out), but on the other hand, like how James reacted then, you could see it as Thomas saying James is just another goods engine. Thomas was in a foul mood then, I wouldn’t put it past him to be subtly digging at James too, but the point is James’ emotional vulnerability and his self perceived need to prove his worth, was really on full display in that scene.
