Tramming a Precision Matthews PM 728 Benchtop Milling Machine With Worm Gear Adjustment

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I recently purchased a PM-728 and so far I am very happy with it. As part of setting it up it needed to be trammed. The adjustment on this mill is done with a worm gear drive and there is a bit of learning curve. Once I figured it out and got it trammed in, I took out of tram so I could show you how I did it.

Pretty cool video. Very interesting even though I don’t have a milling machine. I enjoy the way that you explain the information that you are sharing with your videos basically your an excellent teacher

Thank you for sharing this. I learned the same technique the hard way like you did by learning to only move the worm gear in one direction. Sneaking up on perfect tram. I think I have it down to about 15 minutes now but it is a bit frustrating and it’s a fine balancing act between how much you loosen those bolts And the starting position you guess on to sneak up on tram.

I have trammed it 4 times, the first time took quite a bit as I was figuring it out, the second time was because the first time wasn't good enough and then the third time was on camera and even that took me 20 minutes of actual tramming.

not really, I hate it!! 😂😂 Now there are two videos, both of witch involve this mill that I was not able to edit myself out. I need to get better at filming so I don't have this problem in the future 😜

As you said, the worm gear is great for large moves, but not really sensitive enough for traming. No difference really compared to the system on a full size Bridgeport. Going past tram and then back again loading up the worm backlash as you show is really the only way. With these blocky square head and sqaure column mills, I would think a very clever guy like you could easily gin up a removable jackscrew near the top of the head. For instance bolting a solid block to the column that then has a fine threaded jackscrew to push on the head (all within the worm backlash). That way the head can't rotate further when you tighten the tram locking nuts. Let me know if you need further explanation. I looked around for an example and have been surprised I can't find anything out there. Maybe I have no idea what i'm talking about 🤣

No I totally get what you are saying and the idea is brilliant. You could likely even use the jack screws for slight adjustment and get closer to 0 at both ends.

@@dazecars Perfect 👍👍 Although we both may be overthinking it ...... "Dozer" over on the HomeShopMachinist forum offered this simple description to tram in a PM728: "The worm gear on the head is just so you don't lose the load. I never use it for tramming. I get close and then whack the head with the urethane hammer to get that last thousandth out of it." 😂😂

I do not think it matters how true the piece that goes in the chuck is. It could be bent s long as it is secure in chuck

I think you are completely correct, but I figured why risk it. The fact that it was repeatable shows how it was made "accurately". Not that it needs to be repeatable as you don't remove it until everything is fully trammed. Again I do agree with you but also live by "anything worth doing..."

@@dazecars I was going to say the same thing because the bearings are what are controlling the rotation. You already have a zig zag fixture holding the dial indicator. I used a magnetic holder stuck to the spindle to check mine after machining the bed with the spindle. I don't have a head that rotates. It took 1try to get the bed that level. Then took 4 more tries to get it back there after making it worse. I was going to run out of bed. LOL.

agreed, but if it's not that hard to make it as true as possible why not.
