Training a foal is such a rewarding experience BUT you need to remember they are not always going to be little and cute so make sure you teach them manners from the beginning. I have trained all my horses from birth to under saddle and I am proud of each of them.

I bought a horse in April, lovely 10 year old mare, but found out she was pregnant, yikes . Never had a foal before, but a month later my little girl came into the world, I handled her from day one , we got a great bond, shes now 3 months, in headcollar, leading on a rope and lifting her feet for me. I used your videos for tips, so a big thank you x.

What a sweet foal! He clearly has been loved by you and trusts you, which takes time. I loved how you explained how to know normal behavior and that a foal will kick you if you just went up to his hind end out of instinct and not bad behavior. Great video❤️

I can definitely relate to the cow kick by rubbing that area. I got a surprise tap to my elbow. Thanks for the explanation. My neighbors horse had a pink nose and it had blisters. I wondered why, now I know. Thank you for that explanation as well! Good video

I've got a 19 month old I'm training, and she's my first youngster. I really appreciate that you give the "why's" behind the how's.

What a beautiful boy he is. I'm new to your videos. I enjoyed this very much and always like learning new things. He already seems very well behaved. I work at a equine rescue and there's always a chance of getting a pregnant mare, which we had a couple in the past.Its always good to learn as much as you can. Thank you for a great video.

I really enjoyed your video. I don’t know what it is, but I always seem to come upon videos years after they were made, but I am subscribing to your channel. I have a 10 day old fool who is easy to handle because if I sit on a bucket or a feed bin like you did, she would climb into my lap and sit down. we do not have trouble holding her for the vet but I do have trouble cleaning her corral because she attaches herself to my shirt and then just follows me for a long time. I didn’t realize how much fun of all would be and I am looking forward to watching all your videos on working with young horses. Thank you.

Love your videos! Got a foal in May (we got to see him be born and so lucky to know him from day one). It has been 10 years since I have interacted with foal that young so felt a little rusty and really appreciate your videos!

He’s now very well along! He’s grown beautifully. I made mistakes along the way, like feeding alfalfa to him at too young an age, but overall I’ve done well by him. I hired a pro trainer after I halter trained him and introduced him to walking on the lead. He’s had a pro trainer since he was 6 mos old. Best money I ever spent! He’s now learning to work under a surcingle and lead lines. He knows all his round pen commands plus he has a cute little habit we let him keep: when we say whoa! in the pen after lunging him, he swiftly swings under our outstretched arm like a little chick under a mama hen’s wings. He’s smart, strong, healthy, and loves to learn and work hard. I also learned through DNA testing that he’s a mustang! I got him completely wild (unhandled) & I felt unworthy of this task. But together we pulled through. He’s beautifully trailer-trained, too! I surround him with toys and keep him mentally stimulated, as well. He’s an all-around good boy & my sweet baby. I can’t see ever parting with him. One day I hope to say to his old man face, “Kissa, I remember when you were just a tiny baby!” God willing, we will be riding into Tombstone under a full moon one day.

Grayson is stunning! Thank you for sharing your early training techniques. I love the way you interact with your horses - both on the ground and in the saddle. You only correct what needs to be corrected but in such a patient, loving manner in a conversational tone. At the same time you help people understand why the behavior occurred and that they are allowed to make mistakes and don't make a big deal about the little things. Love the way you laugh at yourself and them when you're in the arena. I hope people take to heart your advice about what is cute when their little but will be a huge problem when they're full grown. I tried to explain that to a woman once who let her colt rear in front of her. Not a "little thing" and not trained - allowed. Allowing something is the same as teaching it. Much easier to get it right early particularly for the horse who won't understand why it was okay before but not now. I like that your interactions with your horses allow them and you to enter that forbidden "bubble" that so many people insist on. Can't be in their space or visa versa. One has to be smart and aware but, in my opinion, that bubble is a malleable space that is determined by trust, respect and training of what is acceptable and what isn't. Those things are so obvious between you and your horses. Also, it's very helpful the way you explain equine instincts and why they may do something the way they do and riding theory before and during demonstration. I've always had to know "why" I was doing something a certain way. I think it helps the learning process but it drove my teachers and parents crazy! You are an excellent trainer and teacher and an admirable member of the horse world. Love all your horses. Thank you so much for sharing your world and skills with us. I'm glad I came across your videos. They have been a sanity check in this crazy world. Looking forward to following Grayson's progress. Keep them coming. I am totally in alignment with making the world a better place for horses. I was following Grayson's early days on your Facebook posts and enjoying your other photos. One photo in particular caught my eye. Enjoying your morning coffee with Seth. If Seth were a tortie, tuxedo or calico, I would have thought someone had taken a picture of me that I didn't know about. I think I have those same pants! Definitely have seen that feline look that says I would be much more comfortable where that book is! And, I love that book and horseman - The Missed Path by Mark Rashid. It helped me immensely with the sweet and handsome 11 year old paint gelding I rescued a few years ago. He had been in a sale yard for 10 days and literally hours from being on a slaughter truck. He was terribly underweight, hooves in awful shape, a couple of wicked old scars, new cuts and bites, nervous as all get out, obviously barrel-raced and mishandled and...RESENTFUL. It took some time for him to truly believe he wasn't going to be treated badly anymore and stop anticipating it. Now he is a sweetie, magnificent looking and beautiful mover. I credit Mark Rashid with helping me understand his mindset and how to help him. I love that you have trained all of your horses from birth. That explains the bond that is so apparent and it is definitely something to be proud of. Keep up the great work. You are making an impact and don't ever doubt it!

Just found your channel and pretty excited about it. I didn’t grow up around horses but recently started helping a friend at a stable where her horses are boarded. The owner of the boarding stable has never ridden and does work the horses and isn’t working with the foal at all. I’ve been looking at other local stables that spend more time training to volunteer at to become more educated. I’m excited to learn this first month around horses has been incredible. Can’t believe it took me 34 years to get near them

He is one very handsome fellow. I will say that I am not a fan of foal “training” so I was wondering what be offered here. What I saw was awesome. A foal does need to be handled - for many reasons so A +. Grayson was tolerant of your handling because you were tolerant of his limitations as a foal. I am sad when halters are put on newborns and then handled away from the mare and so on. Just providing skills that will allow the foal to comfortably get care. No stress for anyone. Really I loved this.

This helps me sooo much thanks if you have any more recommendations for me, I have a eighth month old foal that I need help with❤❤

I have a mare that have foaled and i was able to get to see him at 3 days old and did start by touching his butt and he is 6months almost 7 ande he have not tried to kick and i started from his back to his front i have never had a foal that i have interacted at this young so im pretty proud of that and started with a rope to put it against his whole body and that helped a lot and by brushing him

hi I LOOOVVVVEEEE horses i am going to get a foal in two years.

I have googled many ways and have not found an answer. At what age can I first bath my foal. Any certain shampoo needed?. My foal is only 2 months old.

My feral mare just had her foal a month ago, and due to her being pretty much wild im unable to approach the foal without her freaking out and running away. Is there any way that i can start training with the foal by herself? I was told i should wait for her to wean, but i fear she might be too big by then

Curious, why did you get him at 1 wk old. I would think a foal should stay with it's mother for several months, at least 3 or 4 or even a bit longer.

(brought?) my foal home at one week old & found your videos on how to handle & halter a foal was helpful. She? was asking for advice on how to teach a foal to lead. I was wondering why the foal wasn't still with it's mother & still nursing. I wasn't talking about your foal Grayson. He's a beautiful foal! I admire your training methods & agree with the imprinting then way you do. It would be so traumatic to a foal that needed rescuing for some reason or needed medical attention, or even hoof care of they were afraid of humans & being handled.

If I may ask, did u self teach this or where did u learn this

Hi Bridgette, I learnt this from years of handling horses and young stock. from running a business starting horses under saddle and from many horsemanship clinics. I am also an absolute bookworm and have a large library of equestrian books ranging from classical dressage to The Masterson Method and everything in between. 🙂
