Rickey Medlocke was one of the two drummers (for a short period) in Skynyrd. He formed Blackfoot. When Blackfoot folded, he joined Skynyrd again as a guitarist currently. The harmonica is played by Shorty Medlocke who was Rickry's grandfather. Blackfoot and Skynyrd are forever intertwined.

Song Facts: This song was written by bluegrass and Delta blues musician "Shorty" Medlocke - the grandfather of this band's frontman Rickey Medlocke. The song is best remembered for its harmonica intro, performed by Shorty, which mimics the sound of a steam locomotive blowing its whistle, pulling out of the station, and accelerating to full speed.

Andy hit the nail on the head. When I had my first 68 Chevelle super sport, running a 454 engine (I had the original 396 engine she was sold with) we would roll slowly through the parking lot of United Skates of American (roller rink) with THIS VERY SONG blaring out of my blazing (for 1978) Kenwood 8-track player, just signaling all the young ladies waiting in-line, that “The boys were back in town! Wow. Does THAT bring back some memories. Old enough to drive, but too young to go to the campus bars. We would queue it up to so they would hear the last of the harp, and right into the heavy riffs. We’re Legendary (in out 16 year old brains) Think opening scene from Dazed and Confused! Lol. It’s a banger! I feel like kinda old! 😂😂👍. LOL!! The car comments were spot on! In 1975, a guy friend in HS bought a '64 Mustang and installed a top of the line 8-track player and speakers and treated us all to some of the best music ever made! Refitting one's ride, no matter its vintage, with the best quality players/speakers was quite the competition back then. Coming of age in Florida in the mid-1970s we'd cruise to a local beach, park our cars next to one another's, pop the trunks and sample the sounds from each other's systems. Among other things. :)

Some are one hit wonders; some are standouts in a massive catalogue, but they are all phenomenal rock 'bangers' that I would string together for a jam session just to appreciate the magnificence of the daring artistry. When this album broke I saw Blackfoot in a NJ bar The Showplace. I lived in Soprano Land (the Caldwells) at the time attending HS. Blackfoot had also lived in N Jersey and had made some noise. I was attending a house party when a friend said they were going to see a band. As it was snowing big time I said " why "? He said he was going to see a band of Indians that played Southern Rock and one of them was in Skynyrd. I said " this I have to see ". So we got to the bar they had enough gear to play a 2000 seat theater. Then the roadies came on stage and started throwing cotton balls into the folks down front. Great show! To hear that album live that fresh was fantastic. They were a well rehearsed machine. Most people don't know that a lot of the Southern rock bands came to NJ for a chance to break and get paid

Link Wray "Rumble" "Rumble" is an instrumental by American group Link Wray & His Ray Men. Released in the United States on March 31, 1958,. "Rumble" utilized the techniques of distortion and tremolo, then largely unexplored in rock and roll. The single is the only instrumental ever banned from radio in the United States. Bob Dylan once referred to "Rumble" as "the best instrumental ever",[12] and the piece has remained widely used in various entertainment media. It has been used in movies, documentaries, television shows, and elsewhere, including Top Gear, The Warriors (in the deleted opening scene), Pulp Fiction,[13] Screaming Yellow Theater with host Svengoolie, Independence Day, SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One, Blow, the pilot episode of the HBO series The Sopranos, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, Riding Giants, Roadracers, and Wild Zero. In the 2008 documentary, It Might Get Loud, featuring guitarists Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White, Page, the Led Zeppelin founder and guitarist, appears playing a 45 rpm single of "Rumble," apparently from his personal collection. Page discusses the record, and performs air guitar along with it. Intercut with this footage is a portion of a conversation between the three guitarists, in which Page talks about listening to, "anything with a guitar on, when I was a kid [...] but the first time I heard "The Rumble" [sic], that was something that had so much profound attitude to it."[14] "Rumble" was sampled by experimental hip-hop trio Death Grips in "Spread Eagle Cross the Block" from their 2011 mixtape Exmilitary.[15] In an interview with Stephen Colbert on April 29, 2013, Iggy Pop stated that he "left school emotionally" at the moment he first heard "Rumble" at the student union, leading him to pursue music as a career.[16] The title of the record serves as the title of the 2017 documentary film Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World which features, amongst others, the work of Wray and his impact on rock music as a man of Native American descent. IT'S TIME!!!

A lot of people say that Rickey was just a "studio musician" for Skynyrd when he played drums for them, but that's an easily provable load of BS. Look at the Skynyrd's First & Last / re-released as the Complete Muscle Shoals album (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynyrd%27s_First_and..._Last) Rickey has sole or co-writing credits on 6 songs. How many bands will spend their money to record songs written by the studio musician??? Nobody. Also, don't forget Blackfoot Bassist Greg T. Walker also played Bass for Skynyrd around the same time that Rickey played drums for them (he's on the F&L/MS album too). These guys lives and bands are totally intertwined -- friends growing up, friends together in various incarnations of their bands, friends forever. Oh, and Preacher's Daughter is an absolute BANGER!

Once you reference to Led Zeppelin I'm surprised you didn't mention When the Levee Breaks because that is a fantastic use of harp as well. But the thing is man I grew up around a lot of blues bands and even alternative rock bands that borrowed from that older blue style and it was so common to me and I loved it, so many people were really really good at it. And I love to hear it, it's music to my ears. So for example it's almost always the case where you play the harp by cupping your hands around it and literally resting against a microphone, and then you run it through a guitar amp just the same way you would with an electric guitar that you want to be heavy and dense and saturated and distorted with at least some feedback. And it's a whole art. And it steals the show and it's done well for sure. It's one of the greatest things to experience live.

Don't Hold On (banger) Desire, Is It True, Lucille, Turn up the Radio, Rollin' by the record machine, Sally can't dance, Can't sleep, Takin' it back. The harmonica "distortion" is probably about the microphone that was commonly used by "harp" players, the Shure 520 "Green Bullet", that fits in the hand and distorts when overdriven.

Also mentioned before search Fanny-original gig watch it and pick whatever song you want. So many bands mentioned them as inspiration, they are so tight, and all they deserve RRHOF status Jean Millington: bass guitar, vocals June Millington: guitar, vocals Nickey Barclay: keyboards, vocals Alice de Buhr: drums, vocals. Love them all quintessential professionals, when they get to jamming I don't want it to quit. Alice just destroys it on the drums, Nicky's piano, and vocals. All their covers are seriously great renditions of the originals, such as the Beatles Hey Bulldog, Cream's Badge, Steven Stills Special Care. David Bowie was spot on with his assessment.
