I wore out this cassette tape back in the very early 80s, driving around at excessive speeds, blasting it at Volume 10! I saw Blackfoot in concert as the headliner, with Kix and Def Leppard opening up for them (circa 1982).

Saw them at a hole in the wall in Corpus Christi Texas with Def Leppard (High 'N Dry tour) in 81 or 82. That place held maybe 200 people. Still have one of the photos I took from that concert.

@@markwilliams6394 Yep, that was the same tour! Incidentally, Def Leppard blew a fuse a little more than halfway through their set, causing a complete power failure in the arena, ending their set for the night.

My friend got Def Leppard to sign his shirt and when they handed it back, they had signed it in Japanese. We laugh at him all night. Some funny shit to us but kind a crappy thing to do to him.

Saw Blackfoot play in the 1980’s in Texas. My friend was like, “wanna go to a concert tonight?” I said, “I’m pretty good right here”… “Man, get your butt up and come on”. So, I did, and have loved them every since👍👍

These late 70’s early 80’s southern rock bands are awesome! Blackfoot, Marshall Tucker Band, ZZ Top, Lynryd Skynyrd all have these bands have really great songs and sounds! It’s like they’re mixing rock, country and blues all together. I love them!

Ricky Medlocke is one of the greats, and is in Lynyrd Skynyrd now, and started with them as teens. Southern Rock is of the earth (You know).. Blues based, rock, soul, etc… Highway Song is a tribute to LS like Freebird… Long awesome guitar solos…Awesome y’all as always!

He would watch each member solo, and be on point…with all that flavor mixed in was incredible!. The next move was to share singing with Steve Gaines since he was already established somewhat. The only sad thing is Shorty, who wrote that song, died soon after so seeing Blackfoot live, while very powerful, doesn't include the into and the blues harp solos. I'm sure finding someone able to recreate those licks wouldn't be easy.

Highway Song is (probably) their most famous song and you guessed it mandatory for roads trips 🔥

Yes Sir and Yes Ma'am! Thank You! That is Shorty Medlocke (1912-1980) on the harmonica. Shorty wrote it. His grandson, Ricky Medlocke, is the lead singer and guitarist. Who gets to record a Top 20 song with their Grandpa?!?! In addition, Ricky has been a member of Lynyrd Skynrd twice...from 1970-1973 and from 1996 to present.

This song has been covered by 161 Rock Bands. Including The Beatles, Aerosmith, Elvis and on and on. Rickie Medlocke's Grandfather wrote the song. His name is Shorty Medlocke. He played the harmonica on the album. Rickie Medlocke was originally part of Early Lynyrd Skynyrd as a drummer(1971,72 and again in 1996 as lead guitarist). Lynyrd Synyrd's song "Ballad of Curtis Loew"; Shorty Medlocke was one of the inspirations for the song. This is the original version of the song "Train, Train" with Shorty singing, and playing the Banjo. The whole album is great they had two native American members hence the name blackfoot

That opening harmonica is played by Shorty Medlock, Ricky Medlock's father. I believe the harmonica in the song was played by Cub Coda from Brownsville Station. As an aside, you might check out Brownsville Station. Their most famous song is Smokin in the Boys Room. For something fun try Martian Boogie. I love that one.

The late great DeFord Bailey gave us the harmonica “train sounds” was the first black to be on “The Gand Ole Opry” performed on the Opry from 1927 to 1941. He set bar.

Cool my dad had all 3 harmonicas he to play me new year song he passed on new year's eve 2011 he met zz top big bopper in Lubbock but he love our music Willie Nelson was in town dad was janitor at the high school he played there I was 15 💛🎭💛😉🖤😎

Blackfoot went through a couple members, and a few name changes, finally settling into what we knew as the band Blackfoot, they chose the name, to better represent it's members...Blackfoot Native Americans.. Rock ON!!!

I saw Blackfoot in 1979 as the opening act for The Who. They played for forty-five minutes and just one song- Highway Song. People were shouting "Freebird"- it was awesome!

Love the way you two weren't sure what was going on with the intro, but once the guitars kicked your heads started shakin'. Nice reaction, you two! Peace!

I was spinning records in a nightclub to help out a friend one summer night in 1979. At that time, local law made nightclubs close at midnight. It was nearly closing time and who should walk in but the Blackfoot band members! They were passing through on the way to another show and just wanted to blow off some steam. Naturally we had to close, but Blackfoot stayed after we locked the doors and partied with us employees. What a night!

"Highway Song" is a must listen by them... I have a friend that used to date Ricky Medlocke in her younger days and is still friends with him... she knew about Lynyrd Skynyrd getting back together before anybody else (other than the band members that is... Lol)

That train sound was essentially invented by Deford Bailey, who was pretty much the only Black performer at the Grand Ole Opry until Charley Pride. That’s a definite tribute to him.

Had the chance to catch these boys in a bar in Jacksonville FL in 1992. Killer show.

You need to listen to the back-and-forth between Duane Allman and Tom Ducette on, 'Don't Keep Me Wonderin' from the Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East. Virtuoso harmonica with a virtuoso slide guitar.

When you hear the start of Train Train on the radio, you have to turn it up all the way and jam! It is just one of those songs.

Those some natives there. Ricky is half Seminole. I'm half Cherokee myself and ACTUALLY A HALF BLOOD. My MOMMA IS A FULL BLOODED CHEROKEE so this band is special to me. Ricky was Lynyrd Skynyrd's original drummer and grew up with Ronnie.

I love Ricky Medlocke. Good man. I met him when he visited my reservation here on the Mescalero Apache land in New Mexico. He interviewed some of our elders and did a little documentary on our people. Soft spoken, very smart, and smiles a lot! We were honored to have him come out and hang with us!

Caught Blackfoot at an outdoor show with Krokus, Cheap Trick and The Joe Perry Project in 1982 on a drag strip in New Hampshire. Quite a spectacle, Ricky Medlock did the Close Encounters of The Third Kind five note signal at max volume, trying to get the UFO's to come on down. Didn't work, but it sounded great. When they did "Train Train" they got one of the best crowd responses all day.

I saw those guys open for UFO in Boston back in the day, they were excellent and one of the best southern rock type bands that could really jam. Great song! Speaking of UFO, they are another band you need to hear, they were a big influence on the hard rock/heavy metal scene in the 70/80s. They had a bunch of great albums culminating in the legendary Strangers in the Night Live, one of the best of its kind. Try Lights Out, Love to Love and Rock Bottom, they will surprise you how good they were. Enjoy! 🎸

As mentioned, Ricky Medlocke is playing lead guitar for Lynyrd Skynyrd now but in his first stint with Skynyrd he was the drummer. I believe his grandfather, Shorty, wrote this song long before and he plays the opening harmonica. The electric harmonica played later is Cub Koda, who did the original hit "Smoking In The Boys Room" by Brownsville Station.

Love Rickey Medlocke and Blackfoot for sure. Great song. It all sounds great, I love that riff and the vocals and the harp and the really hard driving slide guitar. That just rocks. I've been playing that since I was in junior high school when I bought the record album and it always seemed way too short to me!

Natives sure love their blues =) The reservation I am from almost all the bands here are all blues based. Natives and African Americans went through very similar struggles historically so it makes sense.

Shorty Metlocke, the man on the harmonica, and the lead singers grandfather was who Lynard Skynard based the song "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" after listening to Shorty and Ricky jam on the porch in Jacksonville.

Fun fact: the harmonica peace was shorty medlocke the father of Rickey medlocke the guitar player of the band. He often toured with the band just to mc 4 the band and on rare occasion played the harmonica or the banjo.

My first concert. Blackfoot opened for REO Speedwagon. Market square Arena, 1979 Indianapolis. I was 14. Great band. But as a 14 year old sitting way up high I was fascinated with all their balding heads. Had thought they were younger. Haha

Seen Blackfoot live many years ago and they rocked the place. Great southern rock band that makes me feel the music . This is my favorite because my dad retired from the railroad and told me many stories about riding the rails and i Love the blues .

Like Skynyrd, their Jacksonville, FL boys. Rickey Medlocke actually played drums for Skynyrd when they were kids, but he wasn’t happy behind the drums. He formed Blackfoot and has played guitar and sang lead for this band. Medlocke is back with Skynyrd now, on guitar. They had an awesome drummer, Jackson “Thunderfoot” Spires.

One of my favorites from my teen years when my brother and friends used to hop trains out of Windsor and Warrensburg, MO. Those trains and tracks are long gone now, but this sure brings back memories....

Ricky Medlock is a survivor of Lynyrd Skynyrd. I loved this band and my kids were raised on this and Led Zeppelin

I would not say Rickie Medlock is a survivor. He was not in the band when the plane went down. He was in the band before they signed and is now in Skynyrd 2.0

Gotta do “Fox Chase” if you haven’t already. Saw them touring the Tomcat album, late 70’s. They burned the place down. Btw, the family’s been on fire with some great requests. Love the channel guys!

I served in the Navy Seabees with a friend of mine that lived in Ohio. He was home on leave once, just at a bar chillin' about 10 pm when he noticed the owner locked the doors. Then he got a great surprise. Blackfoot was in town and gave the people in the bar a free small concert. Soooo cool!

That harmonica sound is made by playing it into a Shure Green Bullet hi-Z mic plugged in to a Fender Deluxe, Twin Reverb, or Vibraluxe guitar amplifier. Dialed in with mild-moderate overdrive/distortion and a bunch of spring reverb.

Only have one thing to say.. turn it the f up!!! I'm 58 years old and when I was learning how to play the drums as a kid I was playing Van Halen Rush Ted Nugent Ozzy and then I heard this. I was in an accident and can no longer play the drums now but my last gig was in New Orleans 2004 and we tore the house down with this song.

My mother was born in Blackfoot, Idaho and went to Blackfoot High School and had Blackfoot Indian friends. Thought this was so cool to see this band again. Try "Left Turn On A Red Light" it's enjoyable :)

This is the music I grew up on!! We would sit around and sing the whole album!! Lol!! Good times!!

All of the harmonica at the beginning is emulating a steam engine. The very fast part mimics wheel slip. When the wheels lose adhesion, they spin very fast for a second or two.

A good friend of mine is Skynyrd's drum tech and plays drums for Rick Medlock's side project on occasion, when Rick's not touring with Skynyrd. He said Ricky is a helluva nice fella.

Saw them with SRV at Veterans Memorial in Columbus, Ohio back in '87(?) the place was like a concrete cone, just brutal. The only band I can remember that made my head ring more and longer was Motorhead. J.D. Blackfoot was a force of nature in his own right.

I love love love how this sounds so southern rock with blues! That harp hits hits all the way back in 79! I love too that black peeps give it at try! I felt so many of my black friends in Cali where very close minded when it came to music and I was blessed to introduce them to southern rock, classic rock, and punk. Music can bring people together. I grew up on oldies, but also love hip hop and blues. Nothing beats a harmonica jam though!! Peace.

In all seriousness.... this entire album is ridiculously good.... there isn't a bad tune on it. Still have my original vinyl from 1980.... my favorite tune is "Pay My Dues".....on a footnote...Train Train was our Varsity Basketball Warmup Tune in 1984. These guys are part Blackfoot native American and white American. This is definitely blues. Here in the south Black Americans invented blues using blue notes and also using bottleneck slide which can be traced back to Africa where people used glass on string instruments. Black Americans play a crucial ro role in developing blues rock and roll and even country. Country music and blues had a baby together and named it rock and roll and it was all born here in the South even jazz which was born in New Orleans. I love our country I love the history of our music I know the history of our country has a dark past but everyone wasn't evil back then there were some good people that come together and made great music which is now known as American music.

I grew up listing to this continuously compliments of my two older brothers

FYI... in Blues, the harmonica is called a "harp". "Dat boy sho' kin play dat harp!" 😎

You will of course know The Platters sung The Great Pretender, but, did you know Freddie Mercury also sang it. His reason for singing it was because it described his Life at the time. He Loved their Fans and would never let them down. He was slowly dying and he suffered during those Concerts but he Pretended everything was fine. You should do a Reaction to it remembering that.
