Train Simulator 2022: Mount Shasta Line - Dunsmuir to Klamath Falls

Ойындар

An EsPee era specific route for Train Simulator set in northern California travelling up between southern Oregon set in the 1980's, back when this was still Southern Pacific's stomping grounds. This comes from 'Milepost Simulations' the same creator of Arizona Divide and Yellowhead Pass and contains a somewhat reworked SD9E and Tunnel Motors along with a handful of rolling stock to accompany its 108 route-miles.
We'll take a look at the rolling stock and the entire route itself condensed as best possible for time.

I was born and raised in Roseville, California. Seeing those bloody nose SP engines and the Cotton Belt rolling stock definitely reminds me of my childhood. This isn't bad looking at all! It's definitely an upgrade from Donner Pass, which I still play all the time. I really hope we get a TSW2 version of DP someday. I might pick this up!

I wouldn't hold my breath on getting Donner Pass Route on TSW2, there are 2 routes I've been asking Dovetail since Beta of the first TSW game Horseshoe Curve and Donner Pass Route and were only getting Horseshoe Curve now because of a 3rd party Developer Skyhook. The only response I've gotten back since the post in 2018 Beta from Dovetail was (until the Company develops a better understanding of the Game Engine and in game content, we have No clue we at Dovetail strive to push forwards making Bigger and Better Content). Given Donner Pass is 1,313 miles from Roseville Yard to Sparks Yard and a crap load of Mountains and tree's that Donner Pass isn't coming anytime soon, Given the Route will need a Railroad Company as of old school SP (Southern Pacific) or new school UP (Union Pacific) which players will Argue over which is better because that's what players do.

@@doyourememberme2904 I brought up Donner Pass in a livestream not even a year ago and the response I got was "will it come out eventually? Yes. The goal is to eventually have all of Train Sim's routes on TSW2. They're going by the most popular routes first." And I do hope you were exageratting on purpose for effect, right? Roseville to Sparks is only like 70-75 miles. Roseville, CA to Cheyenne, WY is still less than 1,313 miles...

It should be noted the SD40T-2 appears to be an entirely new model, as the Donner Pass DLC from way back modeled the SD40T-2s later in their careers after having their gyralites(not mars lights) and L-windows replaced with the standard EMD cab arrangement, between these and other details like horn placement would take a considerable amount of remodeling to get correct... I suspect internally with the core scripting it's still just a basic Kuju 'dash-2, but visually the model and interior are totally unique from both the Donner Pass and Soldier Summit DLC, in fact it almost looks like the entire locomotive has been completely remodeled, which, if it has, huge props to them. Though I still think they should've also added in the SD40R from Donner(incorrectly identified as SD40-2s by the game, which SP technically never owned) to give mainline trains a bit more power variety... it was actually pretty rare to see tunnel motors running in straight sets without conventional SD40s or SD45s. Plus the old school SD40s SP owned were just cool, and they used them a lot on Shasta. The bell you recognize is one of the original default bell sounds from all the way back in Trainz UTC(that's about the same time MSTS came out if you check your railsim history books) It's an extremely outdated and frankly repetitive and annoying bell that I'm disappointed is even still in the DTG sound library, let alone being used on 45 dollar steam DLC. It's also worth noting... the echo in the horn you were complaining about actually would be appropriate for this route... considering Mt Shasta is in the middle of the Cascades, just something to consider, I think I'll still replace it though, there are much better sounding P3s on Railworks America. The SD9E similarly a mixed bag... on the one hand it's an entirely new, and admittedly very pretty and prototypically accurate model, being an SP guy myself I can't really see anything wrong with it, besides the lack of numbers on the long hood. (that one kinda bothers me, because they went to all the effort to get every detail right but they couldn't be bothered to add one more set of numbers) The prime mover sounds, like you noted, are different and seem to have more of the iconic EMD chug to them that the original Kuju 567s don't, but it sounds like all they did was bass-boost the original sounds, I don't think it's a completely new source. On the other hand the lack of anything of interest inside the cab is a bummer, there's really no difference on the inside between this one and one of the Kuju GP9s. Only complaint about the rolling stock is they missed a huge opportunity to take advantage of the UP license on the TOFC cars, they could've had trailers with SP Golden Pig Service, PFE, classic SP red logo, UP trailer freight service, Mo Pac, WP and Rio Grande markings just to name a few, there's just something about a solid train of clean trailers that looks... wrong. The route itself looks gorgeous, I don't have anything to add or complain about, it just looks good and it'll be an absolute treat to run some of the nicer SP stuff on this line. Definitely gonna pick this up, looks like a solid 8/10 for me, I think the default sounds on the engines are kinda lame and for a 2022 release, there could definitely be more motive power variety, but both the included locomotives look very solid even if they're not incredible. Fix the buggy water and touch up the southern part of the route a little bit with more rocks and foliage, I'd bump it up to a 9, and with a seachlight soundpack, I think this could easily become my new favorite route. Hopefully there's some more SP rolling stock planned because now we definitely need some more, and better looking engines to go on this route.

Very well done, especially unusual details like the lap siding at Mott and Azalea and the old water tower (from steam daze) at Black Butte. I used to extensively railfan this area (and McCloud) during the late 80's early 90's, nothing like 5 tunnel motors chugging upgrade thru Cantara loop in run 8 with 2 helpers cut in just before the cab on a long manifest. Steepest grade on the SP if I'm not mistaken, along with very tight curves. Coming downhill the roar of dynamic brakes and smokin' brakes was also quite a show. The Siskyou line - the original route to Oregon - was still active up until 1994 and had even more brutal grades and curves which eventually led to sale by the SP, ultimately to CORP I believe, which still runs on the Siskyou line. The Cascade Cutoff looks great too, lots of relatively flat sparsely vegetated high volcanic plains, quite a contrast to the deep and heavily forested Mt. Shasta valleys.

The wipers are air operated at the window, they shouldn't be controlled by the twist switches. Another error I saw was the two center fans on the engine are spinning while it's parked. They should be still, those are the dynamic brake fans, and should only spin while you're under dynamic brake. the engine cooling fans are underneath the flared radiator sections hidden from view... when you're looking at the rear rad section, those two rectangular boxes below the roof radiators are the fan access doors. Fun fact, that's the way to tell the SD40T-2 from a SD45T-2... the 45's have 3 fans where the 40 only has 2. (well that and the cab is further forward on the 45 to make room for the V20 engine... ) But still, there's a lot of nice detail packed in here!

I was exploring the 3 Sister's area of Oregon a few years back and there is a mountain slightly north, covered in volcanic glass rock. Black as midnight, shiny glass rocks, sharper than hell. Probably the kind of rock used to make arrowheads I suppose. Perhaps Black Butte is of the same vein. Once this route deviated from the river, the scenery definitely improved. As someone who made the mistake of building a route that followed a river, I can tell you that by mile 19 you become sick and tired of river scenery building. Not to mention that doing it well is a FR killer. But I see laziness here. Overall not bad though. Damn close to excellent otherwise.
