TRAIN CAR SEPARATION "DRAFT GEAR FAILURE" KEARNEY, NE

Ойын-сауық

Wow! Happened for the 3 time in front of our cameras! (Look thru our previous videos for the other two, Cajon Pass & Deshler). Appears to be a draft gear failure that separated the train.

    depending on the 'make-up' of the train,,,,,emergency application can be a 'mess',,,or a 'derail',,,,,some 'light-empty' cars stop quickly,,,,and a loaded-heavy car can 'run into' a lighter car, causing a derailment,,,,,just depends.

  • @thomasdupee1440

    @@tcvideosennistexas For that reason, some railroads (CSX being one) specify a PCS delay of 20 seconds on the controlling unit so that power will be maintained in the event of a train separation. This allows the head end of the train to "pull away" from the rear portion, preventing a collision between the two sections of the train. UP does not specify a PCS delay. There is a KZread video showing the consequences of a train derailment at the head end during a tornado and the rear portion of the train running into the stopped locomotive. Search "tornado vs. train".

    Looks like a draw bar issue. I retired from Norfolk southern back on October after 27 years. The last couple of years I had this happen many times. Most of the time the computer is running the locomotives when it happens. Simple explanation, longer trains means more strain on the coupling systems thus problems like these happen. Normally you will see a dpu in the middle to help stop this but the real reason is with the longer trains and a dpu on the end in many cases the signal can't reach from the front to the rear so they place them on the middle and stuff like this still happens. I wish the railroad well, all the young college guys in the corporate office know it all. As long as my retirement check is in my account every month I don't care haha

    so then,,,that appears to be a 'carrying iron' failure,,,,,a spring cushioned cross iron that holds the drawbar up and keeps it from dropping down during transit ,,,,and if the drawbar 'drops down,,,,it can lose the coupling with the drawbar it's coupled to,,,,,which appears to have happened,the back uncoupled car's drawbar appears to have 'dropped down' and become uncoupled with the knuckles both closed,,, but un-coupled,,,,,that would need to be fixed immediately. ( it will happen again , next time might be a derailment )

    The brakes are on a failsafe system. Loss of pressure is what actually triggers the brakes and every wagon has a pair of service and emergency air reservoirs for braking, the brakes being applied whenever the service line pressure falls below that of the service reservoir. Any sudden loss of service line pressure, such as exactly this kind of split-in-two scenario (the other being the head evacuating the service line to initiate an emergency stop), also triggers the emergency reservoirs resulting in even harder braking.

    If this train had a DPU at the end would it have stopped pushing once the cars separated?

  • @stanpatterson5033

    @stanpatterson5033

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, the DPU and all power units would immediately have the power cut (drop to idle) as the brakes went into emergency. All power at the head end (if morethan a single unit) would be connected by MU cable, and all DPU's in the train, whether in the middle or at the tail and, are connected by radio telemetry. As soon as either the HED or EOT device picks up a problem worthy of emergency braking application, the signal gets send by radio to the corresponding device at the other end of the train to take the exact same action. This helps the air pressure in the train line get bled out much faster than having to all vent out one end through the train to where the initiating device (or separation) is venting. The radio signal is instant, and it tells the corresponding device to dump and cut power, so all radio-controlled power on the train will cut power and return to idle, while the brakes on all cars (and locos) go into emergency braking and bring the train to a stop.

    What happened? Rear car's knuckle dropped below the forward railcar's knuckle's grasp? I'd expectensi.on the couplers to keep them together until a little slack allowed the rear to fall. Would locomotives behind have kepthe train together so the gladhands would not separate the brake line?

    Brakes set when the drain uncouples. Yet, look how long it takes to stop. Also wonder if DPU's reduce the likelihood of that happening. Less strain on the couplers.

    Is it too much to ask how the draft gear failure caused the separation? Isn't the draft gear basically a shock absorber? I just watch a few vids on draft gears and it doesn't make sense to me. The draft gear is positioned behind the coupler. The coupler is held in place by a plate and a pin. Just a curious new railfan here.

    Ok, so not a draft gear. Those have Eocc, End of car cusion units. Hydrualic units, with nitrogen gas that retruns the coupler to draft position. In this case it appeared the bolt came out allowing the F-pin to drop out, subsequently allowing the coupler to pull out. Not really a big deal. It happens, i've put them back in many times in the cleveland area. Draft gears are different.

  • @andrewlucia865

    @andrewlucia865

    The air brakes applying, that how. The brake system needs pressure to release the brakes, not to hold them closed, as such, when the train separates like this, the air line is broken and dumps all the pressure, causing the brakes to apply full force on their own. As a result, the crew know something happened almost immediately after it happens, and when the train stops, they can walk down the length of the train to figure out what exactly happened and try to fix it.

  • @mocotton225

    @mocotton225

    DJ KYLOWW Separations very widely depending on train handling, train build, weather, and lots of other factors. Train build seems to be the most important, putting the weight and certain type cars in the right spot for balance. An experienced engineer may be able to manage a poorly constructed train but it’s not easy.

    James Brown indeed. That’s all thanks to a device called an EOTD (end of train device). It links up with the locomotive and is attached on the knuckle of the very last train car. This device communicates with the locomotive and has the ability to apply the brakes from the rear, should a hose link up and limit the air flow, or in this case, a train separation

  • @keystoneraillink2110

    @keystoneraillink2110

    4 жыл бұрын

    3sierra15 it’s by radio command. The EOT and HTD send info to each other about air pressure, also by radio command. The EOT works when the HTD sends an emergency braking signal to the EOT, which then dumps all the air pressure from the back of the train, engaging the breaks. On a side note if you have a scanner, you can hear the HTD @ 452.9375 and the EOT @457.9375. Again, EOTS are for when there’s and kinked hose or closed handlecock. In this situation, it was the drop in air hose pressure
