Trail Sculpture - building dirt jumps by hand - timelapse. Strangely satisfying
Chill out for 10 mins and let us do the work.
I use timelapse filming mainly to prove to myself that at the end of the day I have actually done some work! Most of these shots cover several hours of digging condensed into just a matter of seconds- but when you're in the woods digging, especially if you're alone, progress can seem painfully slow sometimes! Making a big landing takes so much effort, the volume of dirt alone can mean hundreds, maybe thousands of wheelbarrows to fill, move and empty.
I find that filming a timelapse stops me from getting lazy - if I stop digging to call or message someone it looks very obvious in the shot. You have to keep busy and keep moving. It's a good way of making sure you don't stop until the job is done. I generally set myself a target of something to achieve and then don't go home until it's done- even if it means getting lights out of my car and digging into the night.
This video is a mash-up of some of the timelapses I have shot over the last few years either of me alone (cheeky week day visits) or with the crew all digging together on Sunday. Even tho we're hopefully nearing the point when we can all return to our local trail spots- it's been weeks since I have ridden or done any digging. I plan to ease myself back into things and spend more time on a shovel than a bike for a while.
Really hope you enjoy the video... Next week's video is a little different from the norm so look out for that one!
Take it easy - oh yeah and subscribe ;-)

It’s about 80% sand- it varies. One corner is pure sand and the other is quite good- we move stuff around but yeah, it’s sandier than we’d like but we just make the most of what we have 👍🏼

@@justkeepdigging1956 probably better than all the boulders rocks and roots at our jumps we have to sieve our top layers for hours
I see a lot of channels with comments saying something along the lines of “you deserve more subs,” but this is one of the first that I’ve ever agreed with completely. The shots are so professional and the production quality is so great that it is truly mind-blowing that you haven’t blown up yet. +1 subscriber from me

That dirt is like a gold maaan !!! Nice job !!!
idk why but watching someone build jumps is so satisfying also i class building jumps as a skill and an art.
This is some serious hard work. I have backyard trails of my own, and it comes to show how much effort it takes to create them. I’m pretty sure that if it were only one person working on this... it would take years👍

Dude I can totally understand what you mean. When you're working on trails solo, progress seems slow going. You're doing kick ass work though my friend! The soil you're using looks like sand to me. I'm from the Northeast US, and the soil around here is almost black. You can't stick a shovel into the ground around here and NOT hit 20 huge rocks. Progress is extremely slow over here. Dude, that little set of stairs you guys built is sick. I love those little details at trails. Keep digging my friend!
💯% High End shaping ❤️
That dirt is insane

The lack of rock makes me so jealous, that dirt looks amazing to work with, good work!

Wow, truly an art form. Where are these jumps anyways?
That dirt is soo nice I hate my canyon dirt
beautiful work. what trails are these? UK somewhere judging from the shovels? and holy beauty butter dirt...
Can I please buy some of that dirt 😭 Where I live the dirt is literally clay and LOTS of rocks and building jumps is so hard. The vid is great!

Thanks dude! Yeah definitely sandier than we'd like! Lucky to have a few patches of better stuff but nowhere near enough! We don't claim to have perfect dirt or be the best builders, we just enjoy making the best of what we have.
Man that dirt is epic, I live in the desert and it takes 20-30min of swinging a pickaxe just to get 1 wheelbarrow full of rocky dry soil. You guys look like you’re building with perfectly moist beach sand.
@justkeepdigging1956

Thanks dude - Keep slinging that pick buddy - you know it will be worth it :)
Have you ever seen someone make a moss slurry to plant moss, yogurt blended up with a patch of moss, turns into liquidy gross lookin stuff but whereever you put paint it spray it pour it moss will grow, helps keep jumps moist. Your atrwork looks amazing them backsides would look dope fully greened in.
You literally need to make multiple videos of all of this amazing hard work, talk about the jumps more, you could’ve made a good quality vid out of just the steps and landing.

Hello dude- You're right- but at the time that work was done I wasn't making youtube videos. I made just one 10 minute video a year to show what we did each winter for a bike website (pinkbike.com). In future I'll be taking more time to explain what is actually going on! Thanks buddy!
