    i like the fuel tank at the rear, the cap is set directly above where the hot exhaust will be, that way if that cap ever springs a leak, its definitely going up in flames

    What about the gas tank between the knees and right above the motor and hottest part of the exhaust...the head pipe!!! .... On every dirt bike and quad...and most just have a plastic cap!!! Give me a break...and you think the gas jug cap being above the exhaust end cap is a risk!!! Lol....

  • @glamisfanatic

    @glamisfanatic

    @@SteveSmith-wl8yq The cap on a normal gas tank is at the very top of the tank, its unlikely that would leak from the cap and onto the header. The way yours are positioned if the seal on the cap fails it will 100% leak due to the position of the cap. Also, good luck if you get rear ended, or rear end someone since the tanks are at the very front and very rear of your quad. Lol....

  • @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    It is a simple mechanical engineering, combustion properties, and statistics based probability problem. An extremely thick aluminum canister with a massive O-Ring seal fixed to a threaded aluminum cap has a failure rate (probability of leaking) exponentially less (extremely unlikely) than a plastic cap with a vent hole already in it (i.e., plastic gas tanks). Oh by the way, which rarely ever start a quad/bike on fire...which means the aluminum canister is even more rare/unlikely to happen! Additionally, liquid does not burn...vapor burns. So, if by some almost unlikely reason the aluminum canister started to leak the dripping fuel will "not" land/hit any portion of the quad and thus the most that would happen would be the fuel free falling to the ground. Even if said fuel liquid/vapor passed through the exhaust gases it wouldn't ignite because the ignition source wouldn't be hot enough to ignite it (you would need some hot particle to fly out the exhaust endcap to cause ignition...and since the exhaust on my the quad in question has a spark arrestor it is even that much more unlikely the fuel vapor could get/find and ignition source). The statistical probability of my wife's quad burning up is still more likely to happen from a fuel leak that comes from one of the following: fuel tank cap, fuel tank vent tube, fuel take fuel line, or the carburetor (and all those are extremely unlikely events)...So some stupid aluminum canister than you could hit with a hammer and it wouldn't start leaking, is not going to be the source of my wife's quad going up in flames...just saying. I'll tell you what....I'll send you 10k$ if my wife's quad ever catches fire due to any of the 3 aluminum fuel canisters she has on her quad or if my quad catches fire from any of the 3 aluminum fuel canisters I have on my quad! I'll do another reply to your comments stating that you were right, and then get your info to send you the money. However, I wouldn't sit around waiting for that day because the math and science supports me, not you! But hey, you know more about everything on my wife quad (than I do) just by watching KZread! 😉 Thank you for giving me something to do this morning...have a good one...

Items 1 and 2 are must do mods...number 3 is just additional fine tuning to get the correct return force. I'd do 1 and 2...then test...and if needed then do number 3.

I do know I jetted it a little fatter than normal -- so something along lines of jetting for 2k above sea level (we are at 4k). I went slightly fat (mostly with the main jet) to help with engine temps during are warner, very dry, Vegas Desert Heat days...gives the engine what little engine heat break. Any idea on handlebars for it do u think 7/8 Renthal or pro taper Atv bars Would work? Stock bars suck an i cant find much. Also where can i fine wheel spacers i want to get 1.5 for front and back

  • @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    6 жыл бұрын

    You can get the 1.5 wheel spacers from Rocky Mountain ATVMC (I'm not endorsing or promoting this company...they just have a lot of stuff for the TRX250X). Recommending a bar setup depends on what you are looking for....i.e., do you want taller, wider, more pulled back, etc.. I think the best option (and w/most options) would be PROTAPER CONTOUR 1 1/8" HANDLEBAR (they come in ATV Low, Mid, High, and Yamaha Raptor Bends). The nice thing about them is no crossbar so you can just make a simple custom mount to hold the stock control panel (lights, key, etc..). You would need to either use the 7/8" to 1 1/8" adapter or a universal rubber mount 1 1/8" kit (ProTaper makes a nice set for each option). I think the 7/8" to 1 1/8" adapter kit is the easiest way to go with ATV Mid bend (high bend if you really want an extra tall bar). Rocky Mountain ATVMC sells this stuff below: -- ProTaper Universal Solid Handlebar Mount Kit 7/8" to 1 1/8" adapter -- ProTaper Contour 1 1/8" Handlebar ATV Mid Bend -- ProTaper Universal Rubber Mounted Handlebar Clamp Kit 1 1/8" Bars (this options requires some custom fab work to work correctly with the Honda TRX250X) I hope this info helps...

    Thanks for all the in depth videos man! Y'all have built what I believe is one of the best all around 250x's I've seen. I'm looking to use this blueprint soon on a 250x for my girlfriend. Was fabricating the 300ex steering stabilizer to fit a difficult modification? Also, would you recommend the Spider SLT grips? And last, does these handlebars have the custom cork and lead weight mod added too? Thanks again

  • @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the kind feedback. Regarding the custom steering stab fab...no, it did seem too difficult to me (I can make you a video on its install if you like). Regarding the grips...I do not think I've every used the Spider SLT ATV grips; however, the design is something I would "not" use on my wife's quad. Take a look at the Odi Cush Dual-Ply ATV Grips...the grips have a bldg like grid...this allows the hand/glove to stay with the grip surface while the very tops of the grip move a little bit (cuts down on vibration and blisters IMHO). And, Yes, the handlebars have the vib mod (lead & cork) installed. I use grips, lead mod, and isolation mounted bars to knockdown the vib in the bars. A few other mods since this video: I went with 23" up front and that made a massive difference with the quality of the ride. I also went with a slightly wider tire on the rear but mounted it on the stock wheels...the net result is a slightly taller tire which gives the quad a slightly taller gearing. 1st was too low and not enough power to pull big hills in 2nd...so now 1st is useable for more than just starting out/crawling. I also swapped out the CDI/ECU for an aftermarket one...gives slightly more power with upped rev limiter...you just have to make sure to always put premium fuel in it.

    I cant find any nerf bars for a 2018 trx250x. they all stop at 2017. would you think a 2017 set would work on a 2018 since the frame and pegs are pretty much the same??

  • @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    6 жыл бұрын

    This is just my "opinion"--I cannot image Honda changed anything with the frame/footpegs/engine mounts configuration from 2017 to 2018. In fact, I'd bet you can go back as far as the 2011 TRX250X and have most of the frame mounting performance parts still fit. I would image Honda is following the profit principal of if it isn't broken don't change it! :-) I purchased the AC Nerfs for a 2014 TRX240X and installed them on my 2016...also, Rocky Mountain ATV sells Tusk Nerfs for the 2017 model. However, my guess is that you would need rear wheel spacers to match the width of any of the Nerfs (they most likely will stick-out well past the rear track width)...that is why I ended up modifying the AC Nerfs so they didn't stick out past the rear tires. Best of luck...

    Do you know what would cause a gas leek on a 2002 sportrax 250ex? It has been sitting for a while, and it’s coming out of the over flow, would it be the float, or anything else? Thanks if you can respond

  • @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    5 жыл бұрын

    Luuuke, I'm assuming that you get this when you turn your gas "On" and it stops when you turn your gas "Off". If it's leaking a steady stream of gas out of one of the small tubes coming from the carb then it most likely is a stuck float...if the leak is more of a drip then it most likely is the needle & seat. For a stuck float, you can tap (lightly) on the side of the float bowl (lower portion of the carb) with the "handle" of a screwdriver to loosen a stuck float (works most of the time)...the needle & seat might fix it self after getting fuel/gas on it several times.

    The reason it's so clean is because it's the wife's ride and only had a few break-in rides on it when the pic was taken. I haven't tested top-speed (yet), but my educated guess is 50-55 mph. I would expect a 300EX to have a slighter higher top-speed (w/stock gearing & tire size). My daughter has an 06 TRX300EX and we are riding in a few weeks...I'll do some GPS tests on both machines if I get a chance. For ref my YFZ450R (stock tires & gearing) measured 75 mph (GPS) on asphalt.

    The front Elka shocks bolted up without any modification required....they are actual made to fit the TRX250X. However, Elka doesn't make a replacement rear shock...so I called Elka directly and had the REP find a shock that had the correct length (I used a 300EX version). The eyelets (bolt holes upper and lower) are larger than the 250X so I had to do a little mod (I used shim design). The front shocks work really well; however, the rear shock is valved for linkage based rear suspension and thus is too stiff for the 250X rear suspension design. I tried going with the softest rear spring Elka makes, but it's still a little too harsh. My next step will be to revalve the rear shock...I'll just have to play with the stock shim stack options to see if I can get it where it needs to be. I didn't change out the header pipe for one main reason, the wife needs the power in low-mid range. She rides with very low end power/rpm....a larger head pipe will shift the power to mid-top end power...she would rarely see/feel the benefit on the larger head pipe.

    Oh...sorry... The speed/MPH is from the GARMIN GPS unit on the handlebars (clutch side of bars)...the Silver Trail Tech LCD unit measure Engine On Hours and Engine RPM (it has one wire that wraps around the sparkplug wire -- it uses inductive fields caused by the sparkplug coil). There are Trail Tech (non-GPS) miles/MPH measuring unit that use a magnet on one of your front brake rotors...the magnet passes another magnet mounted near the brake rotor and then the electronics measure how quickly the magnets pass each other (you just have to measure the diameter of your tire and provide that info into the trail tech so it can calculate distance and MPH). Hope this info helps...

I picked the Yamaha because it seemed Yamaha did meaningful upgrades/updates each year (still spending some $ on R&D). A yellow Honda make no sense to me either...maybe Honda sold yellow bikes back in the early-to-mid 70s! :-) I've been riding since the late 70s and I do not recall a yellow Honda (off-road models).

I ordered an Elite for my 400ex, then I could see if I can come up with a mount to make one work for my wife's 250ex, but if you already came up with one that will save some time! @@hibrimic The stock shocks are super cheap and have way too little rebound dampening (IMHO). I cannot say if it is worth the money without knowing how aggressive they ride and the terrain they plan on riding in. The more aggressive the rider and the worse the terrain the more the upgraded suspension will be worth it. I've been racing off-road since the mid 1980s (desert and MX)...so, I'm pretty picky when it comes to my suspension...however, the suspension on the 250 was put on to make the quality of the ride a lot better for the wife (super soft and not bouncy). I wanted shocks that I could adjust to her weight and riding style...Elkas where pretty much my only option at the time. To answer your questions: Holding UP...it is a Honda! :-) It is very hard to break the TRX250s even when you do not take care of them properly. Yes. 6'4" is very tall for the TRX250, but it is a very narrow bike for woods riding. IMHO, taller bars are a must but I still think your leg/knee area is going to feel extremely cramped. (this info is based on you stating you want a newer ride) ... If it was me I'd try extremely hard to get a Yamaha Raptor 700...its seat is almost 1.5" higher (will feel much more comfortable for you), it has all the power you should need (the 250 is good but becomes too down on power if you ride it more than a few times a year--your skill will out grow the bike quickly, is only 3.7" wider (about 1.85" per side so not really that much wider), it has massively better suspension than the TRX250, and it really will not feel that much heavier since most of the extra weight is down low in the frame, and lastly the upgrades/mods available for the Raptor are better than the TRX250. If you go slightly used you might consider looking at the Honda 450s. The Yamaha 450R are excellent machines (I own a 2016) but they are more motocross (very wide and very low) vs woods/desert. I hope this info helps out some...

The DJ instructions called for the DJ110 Main Jet, but seeing that our ALTs will fall between 2500 to 5000 feet...linked this with the fact that the Wife really doesn't use full throttle very much and if she does its only for a few seconds (her normal throttle is 1/8 to 2/3rds). With that said, I would have tried a 108 size main if the kit had included one. I've done a few quick checks of the plug and also hand temp test of the exhaust (pipe and air)...jetting seems to be pretty good for where and how the quad is ridden.

  • @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    @SteveSmith-wl8yq

    5 жыл бұрын

    IMHO the exhaust and jetting upgrades are almost mandatory for adult/or skilled riders. The combined mods bring a very noticeable improvement...the biggest being that the quad can almost pull 2nd gear up the steepest of climbs/hills. A jetting kit is highly recommended...they usually come with the modified tool to allow you to adjust the air-fuel mixture idle circuit screw (it is adjusted at the factory and then capped off). The shocks are a massive improvement over stock--for ride comfort and performance. The other mods that I've done, but after I made the video, are upped the front tires to 23" front and did a Maxxis 22" rear (which actually is slightly taller). I can run lower tire pressures front and rear and the rock/traction performance improved significantly....also the slightly taller rear tires improved the overall gearing so you don't feel like you are always running out of RPM. I've got one other mod I just installed, but haven't had a chance to even test it yet, it a performance CDI...I'm hoping that it gives enough power to pull 2nd gear with sustained wheel spin.

I havnt installed it yet, will this regulator work along with the procom cdi unit that changes the RPM ceiling and spark? the regulator is also suposed to help free up the motor by cutting off power when the batt is fully charged so the motor can spin free'er. just dont want to install it and have stuff go wrong. ok well I went ahead and installed it and WOW.... to say the least my daughters 250 dosnt run either the headlight or tail light so the batt is nearly always fresh. I could tell an instant increase in throttle response low end accell lagged a bit but once I got going good it straight hauled! and it was hitting its rev limit effortlessly nearly every gear change. I could tell it helps midrange to top end for sure, and the cdi is now needed to raise the rev and overall top speed, I could feel a good 5+ mph increase in top end and I can tell the motor spun faster. edit: almost forgot I got a bone stock 300ex here I fixed that runs great with my lighter freind on the 300 (good rider) the 250 was faster overall now... The 250 is an excellent machine, but has major limitations for more serious riders. I'm going to date myself here...I've been riding ATVs since the early 1980s!...so I have some experience. :-) Your friends are correct for certain riders...if you just need an ATV that is simple to operate, maintain, and ride--and you only want to do casual trail riding at speeds below 50 mph, then the TRX250 is an excellent choice (IMHO)--that is why my Wife owns one. However, if you like attacking the trails/aggressive riding...then I would go with the Raptor...or a YFZ450R/TRX450R if you want full on performance. Here's how I would categorize the machines based on rider skill and machines potential to still allow the rider to have fun: TRX250X - Beginner to Casual Intermediate rider (new riders can easily out grow this machine if an aggressive rider) Raptor (700) - Moderate Intermediate to Basic Expert rider (can be a handful for new riders, but most wouldn't out grow it) YFZ450R/TRX450R - Intermediate to Aggressive Expert rider (these are full on race machines) One option to consider for a new rider is a TRX400...I think it would have to be used (say 2014 model), but it's an excellent starter machine that still can be very fun for even experienced riders. Let me know if you want more info...I can provide additional details on my logic and machine specs/capabilities (pros-cons of each). Hope the info is helpful.

WRT your question: It starts extremely easy in any conditions (correct jetting/tuning is everything)...the trick with non EFI engines is knowing when they need to be chocked, primed, partial throttle, etc.. All of my Carb bikes/quads start with less engine cranking then my newer EFI bikes (3 carb to 3 EFI). The biggest trick with a cold engine, that has a Carb, is to give it a few cranks with the Kill Switch/Button on/depressed so the sparkplug gets a little fuel on it before actually sparking...they almost always start on the first kick or crank (if elec start).

For the rear shock, yes, I had to remove the shock and measure its uncompressed length between Bolt Hole Centers. I'm sorry, but I do not remember what the length was, and I've trashed the stock shock so I cannot go remeasure it again. If Elka still has the rear shock part number I posted...here are a few more bits of info to consider. The Elka rear shock I went with had the correct uncompressed shock length but almost all other specs were wrong (spring rate too stiff, shock compression dampening too stiff, shock stroke length a little short due to tall bottoming cone, upper and lower bolt eyelets took a larger bolt (~ 1/16" diff)...it's a ton of effort to get it to work correctly with a 250X.
