Traditional Workbench for a Power Tool Woodworker

As a woodworker that uses predominantly power tools, I wanted a traditional workbench for getting rid of machine marks and hand fitting joinery. While a great majority of woodworkers are building large, complicated, and expensive traditional workbenches, I decided to design a workbench that was specific to my needs. I’ll be honest, I was greatly tempted to build a split-top Roubo workbench. However, the ease of building this small workbench increased my confidence, saved me some money, and quickly got another project under my belt. Lastly, I think this workbench is a real eye catcher.

I really like the size of this workbench. Since I started, I've been using a WorkMate with various jigs for different operations. I realize now that I leave it set up all the time and I would like to build a 4 ft bench with wheels to leave up all the time. I think something like this would fit the bill. I even have a 24" Moxon vise to attach to it. Thanks so much.

When first unpacking the thin metal was problematic

Great workbench build. I can't believe the deal you got on the vice... Wow.

Nice bench man. Just getting started myself an the miter saw/assembly station already isn't cutting it, but I still dunno which direction I'll end up taking. Too poor for all the fancy power tools right now an I'm actually really liking the hand tools I'm kinda forced to use now. Your vice hits a lot of my perceived needs. Sadly sugar maple is about 7.50/bf for 8/4 at the shop near me at this time. Pretty sure we're all feeling a similar crunch. Anyways, thanks for the work

Loved this. Thanks for putting the video together. I’ve been planning a bench for some time, too, and also keep coming back to the Roubo, and ALSO keep thinking it just doesn’t make sense for my use. Your design is definitely the way I plan to go forward. Thank you! Do you remember what size screws you used to attach the top in terms of diameter and thread pitch? Did you just use four in the corners, or more?

Basically you've got the same dimensions as what I'm building but my top is thinner. We both have those casters. I'm looking at the veritas.. suggestion for those casters. You can reduce the wear on them by attaching a steel bar to two of them connecting the pairs on the short ends. That way you can stomp on the steel bar and raise two casters at a time instead of one. That way they take their part of the bench's weight in pairs instead of one at a time.

Does the face vise get in the way when you're working on the inset vise? I feel like I'd be banging my knees planing the far end.

I live near Birmingham. What is the name of the supply house in Decatur you're buying from? I'm about to build a bench and need some wood like you used for the top.
