Traditional Chinese medicine and harmony of the planet: Lixin Huang at TEDxWWF

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which is composed of plants and animals, originated in China 3,000 years ago. While a crucial part of Chinese culture, the demand for Chinese medicinal materials has risen both in China as well as in international markets. China's economic growth has allowed Chinese consumers with high purchasing power to seek Chinese herbal medicine and other natural health products. The interest in using Chinese herbal medicine for wellness, medical treatments and longevity by people in other parts of the world has created new markets for TCM products.
The development of TCM depends on natural resources so medicinal wildlife resource conservation is a precondition of sustainable use and continuation of TCM. Unfortunately, medicinal natural resources have declined rapidly, with Chinese manufacturing companies searching for large quantities of supplies inside and outside China to produce old-brand products and to develop new products for profit.
The overuse of resources has caused a number of both animal and plant species to become extinct. The conflict between demand and supply is a big challenge for the development of traditional Chinese medicine and biodiversity conservation.
In her presentation, Lixin will address how the TCM profession views these challenges and addresses them to promote healthy people and a healthy planet? She also discusses strategies that can be developed to bring TCM and conservation communities together to work with a shared vision to protect our one and only planet.

Amazing how so many say it's bullshit that have never tried it. I had terrible asthma attacks 2 years ago after I quit smoking.I didn't have an inhaler prescribed though as the doctors initially underestimated how serious the issue was at the time. I was taught the lung meridians and other acupressure points and I massaged them immediately when the attacks would set on and they would dissipate rapidly. It saved my life. If I hadn't known acupressure and very basic herbology I might not be alive.

I live in China since more than 4 years now, It's just amazing what people here would believe .... Seems incredibly dangerous in some case in my point of view. Life expectancy in China is not so good ... No conclusive scientific study about any aspect of TCM. Placebo is at least understood a little and have trials to support it ... TCM doesn't have much for itself beside thousand years old beliefs ... :(

Theblacktiger The average chinese person living in China is massively superstitious. The only people in the world I know to compare them to are some Eastern Europeans and some Latin Americans like the poorer Mexicans. Some of them have absolute faith in this kind of crap. The New Rich in China will pay absolutely insane prices for the rarest ingredients in chinese medicine. A lot of this stuff is illegal in China but there is a very deep and we'll established black market there and since so many powerful people are involved in it, benefit from it, or simply believe in it, it continues.

@@georgiegirl6969oh, that old canard -- better yet, why don't You prove that her loved one's recovery was not from Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine. Not saying placebo effect isn't a powerful thing, which as a process, effect & criticism can also be leveled at some applications & uses/abuses of Western Medicine, but how about you investigate your own societal & self-hypnoses before making cynical "placebo effect" accusations... & gee, thanks for your all-too-common non-experiential, or at best, poorly experienced, scientistic & hardly fully scientific but hopefully soon to devolve bias. Experiential "descriptive" medicines, such as Eastern Traditional Medicines like both classical & modern Traditional Chinese Medicine (including unique Japanese, French-Vietnamese, Korean, & family system approaches), Tibetan Medicine, Ayurveda, as well as Western, Indian & other schools of purely descriptive Homeopathy, don't have to be held in opposition to the sometimes-imprecise/inexact-even-by-its-own-standards- surgical-&-pharmaceutical-medicine. The mostly ancient descriptive medicines, used & found effective by at least a billion people throughout the world, generally cannot be explained, understood & hence defined by standard science let alone a presumptive & false scientism, especially given the inherent difficulties in designing efficacy studies respecting the principles of these descriptive medical systems' approaches to health & well-being. That said, there have been some good efficacy studies of true vs sham acupuncture that clearly demonstrate the benefits of acupuncture when given according to proper understanding & application of theory & practice including of course appropriate point selection, stimulation & usage, ie over treatments that use random &/or undefined/unrecognized (hence also "random") points & needle insertions. Descriptive & standard western medicine have their own respective unique principles & bases & can often be used in complement with one another. Please don't throw acid on what you don't understand. As a current health care professional I stress the need of balance. TCM has many valid points of taking care of body mind and spirit. Those of you arguing about how they killed rhinos for viagra like effect clearly didn't watch the video because the entirety is how the TCM community is developing to be respectful/conservative of our earth and it's creatures (as anyone whos studied Chinese medicine knows a basic law of it is our energy direct correspondence to our environment). This said I am still a nurse and you still need chemo, antibiotics, and vaccines. At no point does she dispute this but in fact explains how integrative health focuses on the complimentary nature of utilizing both. If you don't take care of your body and we'll being you will continue to have health issues all the same if you don't take your medicine you will continue to be sick.

    1. "TCM" is never used in studies or research as it needs to be specified whether the TCM treatment is acupuncture, herbs, tuina or qigong or something else. TCM covers many techniques. This term used this way indicates a lack of knowledge about TCM. 2. The internet is loaded with studies and research using RCTs and double blind RCTs where herbs and/or acupuncture is the treatment being evaluated and proves more effective than placebo and some studies it has the same effect as placebo - it often depends on the condition being treated. Sometimes the studies test a combination of acupuncture/herbs and allopathic versus just allopathic and placebo. This statement indicates you posted this comment without looking at the available credible research. 3. The sarcasm at the beginning of you comment is noted. This indicates a bias that is underscored by the rest of your statement.

what so called japanese kampo medicine or Korean traditional medicine both learned from Chinese medicine .just think of the herbs of they used .most of those herbs are not grown in japan or korea.Due to historical reasons and China started to industrialize relatively late. South Korea and Japan developed relatively early. They promoted Japanese or Korean traditional medicine only because of the seizure of Chinese medicine resources and commercialization considerations. Traditional Chinese medicine has a very good effect on the treatment of chronic diseases. Of course, the most acceptable Chinese medicine in the West is acupuncture and cupping.

Japanese kampo or kanpo is basically Chinese medicine, but produced in factories under supervision of the Japanese Ministery of Health. There are about 3 big brands and because of the high quality control you actually know the dosing is the same as prescribed. Which is much riskier when you buy stuff online or in China itself.

Thanks for bringing that up. I disagree with using that too as do the vast majority. In ancient times these animals were plentiful and the entire animal would be used for food and medicine. TCM doctors use other herbs now for the most part. We are moving away from the unsustainable methods that were practiced by most every culture btw. Whales, bears, sharks, etc, all need protection now until everyone smartens up and leaves them alone. Otherwise they'll be gone, forever! And everything is connected in TCM view. When we destroy nature carelessly we destroy ourselves.

pseudoscience my ass. I have a totally rational way of think but believe in tcm. It is completely logical if you study the theory. Whether the application is effective or not is a different question.

The biggest problem with TCM is that it relies on tradition and folklore rather than results. So much TCM is based purely on placebo with little scientific evidence that it actually works. Granted, the placebo effect can, indeed, make patients feel like they're better. Even then, that doesn't make it real medicine.

@@CoachCrystalDunn1 no, not often. Western medicine is developed by interdisciplinary scientists. Pharmacologists, chemical engineers, immunologists, virologists, microbiologists, etc. all have their role in developing Western drugs. TCM is a trade, based in folklore

Chinese medicine is evidence based. There is no other culture with such long continuous history like China. China historically has always placed great importance on the intellects. It is not perfect but to completely dismiss TCM it is arrogant.

A bit more self-criticism and less blowing your own (rhino) horn? Everything about TCM is good, and the bad aspects are 'not official' TCM outlets and the main market is in Vietnam! Oh please.. This lecture was a disgrace.
