Great video, and quick question : 1) What is the RJ45 connection on this device ? CAT 5 or 8 ? OBS: Im asking this because I want to pass an Optical cable in my home, and I want to know what is the best converter for Optical to RJ45, since I don't want to upgrade the converter, as CAT 5 becomes obsolete. I would like to go to CAT 8.

The media converter in this video is for a máximum of 1.25 Gbps, so even cat 5e will do just fine If you're planning on laying a good cable, cat 7 or 8 will be an option. On the optical side the fiber depends on the module (transceiver) being used. Good luck with your project.

Hey, thanks for the great video - do you know how much latency these add? Wondering if it'd be just a couple ms or something more significant. Thanks!

We've not been able to test as our software is not capable of measuring it at a very precise scale, but with normal ping plotter in just a few hundred meters is not noticeable.

@@TechnologyMoments hey thanks for your reply! Have you not at least captured the RTT difference on a simple ping with & without the media converter in the path?

What module you need to use for the SM fiber ? I think most modules I seen are not SM.

For the SM fiber you use 1310 nm SFP module either for medium or longer range. It is not seen in the video unplugged (only in use) basically what you use is: SFP 1 Gbps module: amzn.to/3GBbG4v (up to 550 meters in MM fiber) SFP 1 Gbps module: amzn.to/3uw1V5n (up to 20 km in SM fiber) Long range SM fiber SFP modules are usually identified by a blue rubber protector in the locking lever. Let us know if this helped you.

How would i convert rf signal from a 4g antenna to fibre optic and then back? The only reason i ask, I think fibre optic cable is the only cable thin enough to fit through a hole to gain access to my balcony. I can drill holes so that's not an option for me

If that 4G antenna has an RJ45 port, then this device (media converter) is your option. However keep in mind that the SC connectors ar much bigger... not as much as an RJ45 but still may need a big enough hole.

Can I use any brand 1gigabit sfp module in this? Also does it depend on the sfp module for multimode and single mode ?

Ideally you should use one specified to work with TP-Link devices, but I have actually used any SFP module on this and they all wave worked. Even funny SFP+ modules work on this device... of course at 1 Gbps. I have used 6COM, QSFPtech, 10 Gtek, tp-link and Unifi SFP+ modules on it.

Hello Jammar, as long as no PoE is needed to be provided from this port, yes you can. Actually you can use it as you would any internal NIC.

can anyone tell me if these TP LINK media converters (WDM or SFP) support MAC address cloning on the optical port?

They do not provide you with a GUI so I don't think so.

You can get various lengths and types. For MM fiber use these: amzn.to/3cSG3KW

Hello, this is more for your internal infrastructure and long distances that you may need to run in fiber but with your main cabling runs in copper.

HI, no, it just lets you change the media so you can go from copper to fiber and if you wanted back to copper again. This might be very convenient to link premises that require very long cable runs that can only work through cable. You can use it with any normal networking hardware you own.
